planning to have a custom map done on my car next saturday, it should be more agressive than bluefin So i need a new intercooler. hence me selling my R32 brakes
the options i have that i can think are:
S3
forge twintercooler
THS
APR is way too expensive IMO.
Im quite tempted with the forge for some reason, something about the exrtra surface area and about ease of fit.
my budget
is about £450
anybody any good links or know of people selling up??
Sy :happy2:
-
dont want to hijack the thread mate but can i use this thread as a learner?
why would i need an upgraded intercooler?
and good luck finding the one youre after- depending on the answers i get i might be following you next year to purrrrr-chase one too
thanks :ashamed:

iirc Hurdy was selling his forge twintercooler a while back so ask if he still has it.
-
The S3 get good results for the price and for normal use you cant complain I have one fitted to my 300bhp mk5 :happy2:
What you planning on doing with your car ? fast road use & track or trips to the ring? SteveP has the THS one as for forge wait till you go to the states then buy one cheaper there.

Not selling at the moment
DomT and myself have had a few discussions about our intercoolers (yes, we a geeks and proud of it!!)
There doesn't seem to be a lot between the THS cooler and the Forge Twintercooler, in terms of price or performance.
The idea of getting a 'cooler is to reduce heat soak that saps away the power you have when the car gets hot. The further up the power tree you go, the more important it is to keep things cool. A larger 'cooler will flow more air through it, keeping the system cool and stabilising the power of the car.
The Twintercooler is easier (cheaper to fit, but a little more £££'s to buy), wheras the THS cooler is cheaper to buy, but more £££'s to fit (if not DIY).
The Volume of the THS is slightly less than the Twintercooler, but has larger pipework. Remember that it also still sits between the engine and the radiator, so loses slightly on the ambient temps around it.
The Volume of the Twintercooler and ED30 combo gives a slightly larger volume, but the pipework is a little more restrictive to flow. You get the stock ED30 cooler location as per the THS, but you do get the advantage of the Twintercooler being in front of everything and the virgin cold air draw.
HTH :happy2:

My bad!
I thought that you had bought the THS IC a while back with the intention of installing it, ditching the twintercooler.
-
comon hurdy be a team player  im a forum memebr in need, in need of your twintercooler (ill give you y vRS std one in exchange as well
thats the same thoughts i had on the twintercooler, with it being open in the botom of the grill without anything stuck in front of it, as per the THS S3 style.
I think price wise inclusive of fitting, they will be the same in the end.
So i need to find one.
-
Watch out for cheap Chinese copies of the Forge :happy2:
I fitted both the S3 and forge one at the same time and there was a noticeable difference in power, more than i expected. The acceleration became much more crisp as well.
I haven't had it on the rollers since fitting so will be interesting on the 12 Dec. :happy2:
-
All interesting stuff guys! :happy2:
Due to costs I may go for an S3 one for now and add the Forge one at a later date, so if anyone's selling at some point?
-
S3 one got/gets my vote.
-
pm'd , :happy2:

....
I'm liking the reasoning (by Hurdy) for the Twintercooler [doesn't this modding malarkey EVER stop!!? - Sorry, that's a really silly question!].
When I last looked it was much less expensive than it used to be when first launched - 7 ponies IIRC.
About £450 exc vat from our friends JKM.
-
S3 ic its cheap and not too hard to fit

My efforts would be just like illyuns' - Probably far worse!

My bad!

Errr, I did buy a THS intercooler and was going to fit it alongside the turbo conversion, but since then things have changed a little
My THS intercooler got fitted to Steve Jr's ED30 at Statllers, so he owes me as he didn't know about them at the time :happy2:

anybody know the going rate for an S3 ic from a dealer

i bought one from vwspeed £280 a couple of months ago.

The forge Twincooler has been removed from my leon this week. Its for a leon TFSI FR/CUPRA but Im sure it will fit.
It might just need some brackets making.
Text or pm me if your interested Simon

....
Some comparative prices (all from JKM and incl vat) : -
- S3.......... £362.25
- Forge...... £516.47
- THS........ £595.00
- APR........ £914.25
Hedge's link gives all the detail.
-
had a peek @the jkm website earlier, cheers guys. looks very much like ill be buying the twintercooler from jon-tfsi. and the good news is, i might nt have to sell my R32 brakes.
how does APR justify an extra £300 for their intercooler. thats a huge surcharge in comparison

....I think it would be very interesting to hear privately what JKM would recommend privately. One thing I am sure of from direct experience is that JKM won't automatically recommend the most expensive but rather what they suggest would suit your individual car and its other mods best.

Twintercooler now on my k1 - butt dyno says its got a lot more shove low down and top end seems to be reached quicker.
-
....
Casting cost aside for a moment, I'm wondering if different intercoolers have benefits which are a bit like air intakes inasmuch that their benefits are all very similar and none of them stand head-and-shoulders above the others.
Or am I wrong?
-
i would say the twin cooler !!! that way you get 2 intercoolers running instead fo one, and if he wanted more he could always upgrade to the s3 intercooler as well as the forge intercooler, it is also well priced as well, :happy2:
-
Its alla rranged now. I now have myself a twintake.
I have always liked the idea of the twintake. Some say it gives a little lag low down, but thats not to bad a thing really, it can aid traction a little, And with a massively increased surface area.
I also like the idea of in the future i could bolt an S3 intercooler to it should i decide to. Cold air is our friend.
I d be very interested to see logs and performance based info on all these intercoolers. Im a geek like that, but i doubt it will happen, Its all down to preference and personal opinion. Id be just as happy with a normal front mount like THS or S3. As long as i get the result in the end
-
Nice seeing the twincooler going to a good home Simon :happy2:
Regarding the low down lag I didnt notice any at all. Infact it improved low down pull quite a lot, right at the bottom of the revs before spool-up. After removing it the car deffinately feels more sluggish, even in unmapped form.
I find most of the comments you hear about the twintercoolers giving lag come from those that have not experienced having one on their car. Most likely these rumours come from Forges competitors

music to my ears jon, music to my ears. :jumpmove: :jumping:

Did you check to make sure Andy had left the offending screw out of the undertray mate?

* Note to self: I must log off this forum and stop reading all about various mods and how good they are!

He made a "special screw" to take the place of the original :happy2:
-
well i got a twintercooler off of jon-tfsi originally from Leon, good times. ......................................................................
we thought it would just be a case of making some brackets...bad times. it looks as if it wont be possible.
here is the leon twintercooler, see the brackets are top two corners.

here is the octavia one notice there are 2 holes in the bottom to mount the brackets into. Not sure if ill be able to fabricate anything to fit it.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi756.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx202%2Fsimonskerton%2FFMINTOFSkit1.jpg&hash=0d71d9fe74cf24b27fb6a35f19e3b6f2e134476a)
any ideas
or just look into another IC
-
you might be able to get a fabrication firm to weld you mounts onto the bottom?
-
what material are these, and is there a specific type of welder that would have to be used.
-
they are made of aluminium alloy, its MIG or TIG welding but they need to be experienced at welding aluminium as its very easy to burn through
-
Id definately measure on the car the distance between the studs / mounts and thier position mate ant take your cooler
to the fabricators and swing em £30 quid or so
-
ill have to pop in there tomorrow mike. apoke to matey today about using the workshop to fit, but they are mega busy this week.
Then after taking a closer look i noticed the bracket were tits up.
stand by for my scanned work of art for a possible solution.
-
Haha cant wait for the picasó
-
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi756.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx202%2Fsimonskerton%2Fpic010.jpg&hash=1a17b910d575f7b3cb8f7ece88c5b1b2c656aa69)
looking at the work of art i knocked up with my left hand and a blunt crayon, ive shown that in the bottom corner where there is a threaded mounting hole missing. Some how i need to weld some sort of bracket onto there. So i thought what about if i welded a bolt in the same position, and then a bracket could go onto it, and a simple nylon washer to secure it.
Feesable or not
-
Would you have to fit the cooler, making sure all the pipes are connected and then mark up on the cooler where you need to weld the studs / brackets? Just to make sure everythings going to be in the right place when mounted...
-
That wouldnt be a problem, but to be fair as long as the intercooler is centred in the fron it should be ok anyway
-
Hopefuy the Fabs can suggest something of knock something up
-
With the pics of both IC's to compare, I think there may be a few differences.
Is it just my eyes or is the octavia IC longer?
And the hoses for the Leon look longer to compensate.
-
I dont know, it kinda looks that way but it could be the angle maybe. if it is shorter it might not be to much of a problem. As long as i can knock some brackets up. If not i think im stuffed
-
Could always stick on SCN classifieds and get an S3 cooler and save for ao octy twinter later on?
-
that could be a plan. I heard you were after a twintercooler mike.
-
Apollogies Mike I thought it would fit like most Mk5 platform stuff.
I can offer a refund if you dont fancy the hasstle of making it fit.
-
that could be a plan. I heard you were after a twintercooler mike.
Might be a bit laggy with my huge APR cooler and twinter :(
-
cheers jon, im going to have a chat with the fabricators in work see what they can do. I dont want to risk burning through, ill text you tomorrow. much appreciated.
as far as i was concerned it would have fit so its not a bad thing :happy2:
-
