Title: Good or bad mpg ??
Post by: A1SGP on September 21, 2014, 08:52:31 pm
I've just driven to Wales and back and done 300 miles on a full tank of fuel , I was doing 100 mph most of the way (when I could ) , and I got an average of 28 mpg . I'm stage 2 tuned and I was wondering how that compares to others mpg .

Seems about right, 300 miles to a tank with that level of tune is average.

As above sounds about right, quite good actually.

I'm completely standard and get 300 miles if I'm lucky haha!

I drove to England and back last week and got 37 mpg doing the speed limit!

Personally I would not publically state that you were exceeding the national speed limits on an open forum. One of our former members got a driving ban for posting a clip of him racing on the road that got the Police interested and lead to a conviction.

Thats total bs. Maybe we should have a gated section where we can say what the F*ck we like. Entry on request only after being vetted.

If you got that , that's very good . I've never seen a gti with mpg that high.

That's easily achievable, i got more than that in my Leon (same TFSI engine as the Golf) on a trip across Europe, including standstill on the M25, the waiting/queuing at the ferry port and the 80mph speed limits on the continent and all of the local road and town driving inbetween.

I would expect low 30’s / high 20’s when travelling at a speed close to or in excess of 3 figures, and on the flipside, 40-45MPG is achievable on a hypermiling (economy) run. I’ve managed 45mpg door to door on a 60 mile round trip to a nearby town once, but it was the most boring drive ever. Satisfied my curiosity and never to be repeated!

At the end of the day there are too many variables to compare accurately, the driver and driving style being the biggest influence

The circumstances were different, it was a video for a start (probably grassed by someone) but the prosecution could use posts as evidence in court to demonstrate certain behavior on the road. It would be up to the jury to decide if this was relevant.

Sometimes a bit of ambiguity helps.

If that indicated speed was a read out off his speedo then he was only doing around a 'true' 90mph.

I thought the police and law enforcement can only prosecute you if they have a video/picture that clearly shows your number plate or some other definitive way to identify your vehicle? It's why I blur all number plates in my pictures that I post (both my car and others) so that's identity is that bit harder from a legal point of view.

But as with everything, not advisable to advertise law breaking so clearly. Better to say "was going a fair speed " than clearly state your speed, despite the difference in speedometer readout and actually true speed (via GPS tracking) it'll still draw attention from the law.

We all like to put our foot down from time to time, just be careful when and where!

Had my Edition 30 2 weeks and it's averaging 30mpg at the moment.   I've come from an R32 which weighed 140Kg more, had a 1.2 litre bigger engine, made the same power and it averaged 26mpg.

I thought the whole point of FSI was it's economy?

The TFSI doesn't do full stratified injection like the n/a petrols.

I'm getting 31ish @ 70 on my 32 mile commute, which pops up to around 38 when @ 60 for the same journey, also don't forget the official combined MPG for a standard car in a lab is 39.4mpg so anything above that you're doing well.

Mine seems to do around 40MPG at 70MPH.

Stage 1.5 K03 (Pre-cat delete)
130k miles
Tesco Momentum
18 inch wheels @ 40 PSI Eagle F1 AS2's
Oil and Filter every ~8k

40 PSI? I thought the recommended was 29-31 PSI..?

I didn't realise there were different levels of stratification?   I thought any FSI motor with the HPFP and direct injectors fully stratified the fuel, otherwise what's the point?  May as well rip it out and go back to port injection.  At least the intake valves would be cleaned!

My GTI is completely standard on 17s with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres, Castrol edge oil and always run on V-Power. I average 32-38 on short urban runs and 40-42 on longer runs. On a blast down the autobahn averaging 100mph and peaking at 125 it averaged 30.7mpg over about 100 miles. Once I did a 20 mile round trip and managed 46mpg average (there was a lot of pensioners out that day).

I think the economy is really good for what it is, not so good on <5 mile trips but when warm I am quite pleased how good it is.

I'm Stage 2 DSG in my Edition 30 so running about 340bhp with full Milltek TBE and i would average about 18mpg at that speed so would only get around 230 miles to a full tank of around £75ish. :sad1:

40 is fine for the 18's, you can run about 45 PSI with load / passengers.  Less drag better economy.

I've found 36-38 is better for comfort though.

I'm sure they'd take 100PSI++ before popping.

Checked mine and the tyre shop filled them to 34psi. I stand corrected!

Hi All,

According to the Kwik-Fit tyre pressure search, the below table shows what pressure we should inflate our tyres to - do you agree?

Tyre Size    Front (BAR)  Rear (BAR)   Front (PSI)   Rear (PSI)
225/45R17     2.2 BAR       2.0 BAR           31 PSI   29 PSI
225/40R18     2.0 BAR       2.0 BAR           29 PSI   29 PSI

Thanks

No wonder some people can't get decent fuel economy, lol... here's the tyre pressure for the 18's on Mk5 Golf GTI:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fi64%2FJerry_G%2FFillerCap.jpg&hash=81b91bf0b3cc75ab71092ca75a9db831327be80a)
2.6 Bar = 38 PSI
3.2 Bar = 46 PSI

Did it come with 18's from factory?

Think the 17's are 2,4 / 2,4 AND 2,6 / 3,0 with load.

Pretty certain it came with 18's from factory. It's an 06 and the list of codes etc in the boot appears to show it coming with 18's, Xenons etc. Strange.  :rolleye:
Title: Re: Good or bad mpg ??
Post by: Scottymon on September 29, 2014, 12:51:23 pm
It is strange why mine would have the top one (2005 18's Xenon etc. Factory) and yours the bottom, with similar years and spec.

Either way, for the sake of this thread, the lowest amount is 2.4 bar which is just shy of 35 PSI, so the 29/31 PSI tables are wrong; must be a comfy ride though.

I don't agree, I run mine at 38 PSI all round on 225/45/R17 . Chucking the car into corners at the recommended pressures it wonders around meaning more lift off over steer and throttle control, taking the corners slower. I find running at 38 PSI the car more stable and better on fuel saving too (obvious really). My personal preference anyways.

I'm Stage 2 DSG in my Edition 30 so running about 340bhp with full Milltek TBE and i would average about 18mpg at that speed so would only get around 230 miles to a full tank of around £75ish. :sad1:

Gotta pay to play.

Should be around 30 on a cruise though.  If it's 18 on a cruise, something is very wrong.   Who did the map?

DSG is more efficient as the computer knows exactly when to change for best consumption. Obviously this doesn't help on a cruise but I highly doubt the extra weight makes any noticeable difference.

Momentum was £1.29 a Litre today, not sure if that's good or bad tbh, as I usually just put a monetary amount in.

It's been 1.31 round my way, it's usually the same price as diesel and v power is usually 5p a litre more
