So I've had a problem develop on my trusty old 07 gti which I've had from almost new and put 66k on...
I have an intermittent squeal which has developed, it sounds like a squealy bearing, almost always carries on whining once ignition is switched off and before the drivetrian comes to a hault.
Switching off / on air con does not have any effect
Sometimes I dont hear it at all on a short journey and other times it is very loud. My mother in law thought I had squeaky brakes when I dropped my son off to her this morning.. and that's the best way to describe it.
It does sound like it is coming from the starter motor which is odd as I would only expect this on start up from a sticky solenoid?
Other than that I am stumped.
I've read up on the usual faults of diverter valve and pcv, this car has had neither done but then again I ran vag.com on it only last month and no fault codes at all...plus this isnt a symptom of either of thsoe failing from what I gather
Shall I change this anyway as a matter of course?
Things I can think of of the top of my head which need elimianting are:
Water pump bearings
Alternator bearing
Some sort of vacuum leak
Noisy fan bearing
any ideas people?
cheers

All I can say is the DV and PCV won't throw up fault codes of their own usually, something else will eventually so best inspect/replace as a matter of cause.
Possible help to hunt this squealing is to be in the engine back and listen to components to see if it's obvious.

Probably aux belt, alternator or cambelt or one of the associated tensioners / pulleys

As above but this may help

My Pirelli started to squeal and I changed the PCV and sorted it.
Car ran fine and it first sounded like a aux belt slip, but after I switched the car off I could hear hissing so took the plunge and was worth it..
