Title: had the car terracleaned.
Post by: lady_gti on September 28, 2014, 07:52:22 pm
Took the car for my 1st terraclean on Friday. I was a little bit sceptical like most people about having this done. I've done a lot of reading about how to get rid of my carbon build up as it's been running really rough and idling being painful so needed to do something asap.
Wow I wish I had done this sooner, the terraclean only took 2 hours and such a brilliant service. I've driven around a lot over the last few days and I've noticed a massive difference. It's like driving a brand new car, no more rough running, bad idling, horrible starting and occasional misfires. Will see if anything changes over the next few weeks.

Did you have the intake system done or just the standard fuel system?

I had the intake and fuel system in what they call an intensive clean that set me back £176 all in. They recommend the intensive clean 1st and then standard cleans annually.

I am sure @Saintsteve (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4825) had this done a while ago and said it did nothing to his engine as its a tfsi engine but could be wrong

^ @Saintsteve (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4825)  only had the fuel system clean done IIRC. They weren't doing the intake clean for some reason. I think the intake clean would give the best results on the TFSI

The clean I had done was specific to direct injection engine. Maybe they have developed the service.

I also had the intake clean done by terraclean and noticed a good difference !

Another fella i know won a free tearraclean, he own's a 182 clio, and noticed a huge difference, better idle, his fuel went from 25mpg to 32mpg over 2-3 days...

From what's been said before, the intake clean does make a difference, but best results are gained when you remove the inlet and walnut shell blast the inlet ports on the head properly. The standard Terraclean isn't worth it as mentioned, get the full intensive treatment.

It's on my to-do list.

I had my gti terracleaned a couple of weeks ago.  I had  rough idling and poor starting.  (Power was down but that was due to the diverter valve).  It did make a difference, idling was smoother, engine was quieter, starting was better and fuel economy went up by 2-3 mpg.  Then I had my DV replaced which made a hell of a difference!

Lady_gti - what mileage / age is your car, mine is 64k/2006 and have been thinking about this as well, not sure whether to leave it a bit longer or not, I don't really experience any issues with idling but know it wouldn't hurt at all to have it done :)

My car is a 57 plate and has done 79000. From what I know about my cars history, as I've only had her since March, is the last owner was from London so I can imagine it's been doing a lot of town driving which doesn't help.

VW dealers sell a fuel cleaning additive which is supposed to work quite well on TFSI injectors.  Anyone tried it?

Mine too, if just to see the walnut shrapnel in action

The other (and cheaper) way I've seen people do it is close both valves on TDC and scrub the ports and valves with carb cleaner.  My only concern with that is cleaner and bits of crud dropping down into the bores and washing the oil off.  Walnut shells would just burn off harmlessly I suspect.

Some folk squirt stuff in through the intake air sensor hole.  Does that get good distribution across all 4 cylinders and the tumble flaps?

I wanted to do this on mine. Its coming up to 97,000 miles on the clock now. So should be good results. Said to my VW/Skoda mechanic mate about it and his thoughts was not to do it as it could lead to other issues.

Removing the soot/crap that could be blocking a leak on a seal. Said something else about the turbo internals but I can't remember as it was months ago I spoke to him about it.
