Having owned my 2003 Mk4 GT TDI 150 for three years I decided to upgrade to the Mk5, I wasn't too bothered about mileage but set a maximum of 130k, I also wanted a high spec model with the must haves being DSG and dual climate... It proved a tedious search but eventually I got lucky and bought this on Monday... 2008 GT Sport TDI 170 DSG (118k full service history) not only in my favourite colour but also high spec'd from the factory: Charleston 18" alloys, black heated leather seats, front armrest, mfsw/highline cluster, cruise, dual zone climate, winter pack.
Mod's so far: VW LED numberplate lights, underseat drawers, black headlining and trims, RCD510, Polo DAB aerial, brushed chrome headlamp switch, Edition 30 rear lights, flat bottom steering wheel, Edition 30 rear valance
Mod's planned: Edition 30 front valance, sideskirts and tailgate spoiler, GTI gloss black B pillar/door trims, Bluetooth, Seat Ibiza DSG paddles, Skoda LED drl/foglight units, Brushed chrome switch set, Edition 30 pedals, GTI or Edition 30 DSG shift knob, R32 front brakes or big brake kit? 312mm rear brakes/VWR rear discs? Mk6 white highline instrument cluster

Nice motor - and as much as I love my black one, I think that's the best colour :-)

Looks a good base to start from. Im sure you will have fun modding it. Have you thought of fitting interior LED's too? Nice cheap mod at around £20, changes the look of the interior. My mod list started off relatively short, but after being on here for a while its grown quite a lot!
-
Looking good :happy2:. Look forward to seeing what you do with it :happy2:
-
Great base to start with! Love the colour, although I chose Reflex Silver (it can camouflage dirt and most scratches better). I wish mine had the same engine. :drinking:
You might consider the Hella xenon look headlights, if the OEM xenon are too expensive atm. They improve a lot the front end. I also wouldn't go for the Dectane LED rear lights. Too much tuning car look. I find the darker ED30's or Valeo's much better.
You can fit with a bit of bricolage the S6 DRL like this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimageshack.us%2Fa%2Fimg571%2F5577%2F16042013481.jpg&hash=463d4b7a8acc0a4eb6613cb6fe040bdf8971899f)
Or in the upper side of your fog grills, for example.
If you want some ideas about other mods you can do to your interior, you can check my topic.
Cheers

Thanks for the comments and suggestions so far guys :happy2:

Great colour mate. :happy2:
Good to see you got the number plate LED's fitted. I still havent ordered mine because the delivery is ridiculous to Ireland! :stupid:
-
Cheers :happy2: Ah right, if it helps send via me with the free 2nd class post to UK mainland and I'll ship them on to you as soon as they arrive 2nd class
-
Cheers mate but I think I'm sorted now. Ordered from German Ebay so the long wait begins.
-
Why does it have odd headlights?
Been in a bump? :scared:
-
No previous owner had it replaced for MOT and that was one they supplied. I have the correct one on way from eBay should be here soon.
Other updates..
Bought set of front rubber mats from TPS for the winter.
Polo stubby aerial fitted.
Car going into VW tomorrow for service.
-
Not much to update, need to get some photos taken, not had much time and when I have it's been raining...
Aquired black headlining trim parts, now looking at buying the headlining itself.. found one fairly local but if condition is not as photo then I'll have to hold off a month and order a new one through TPS.
Also aquired some underseat drawers, when they arrive will have to order bits I need like brackets etc from TPS.
Headlight.. hopefully get that fitted soon, read up how to remove bumper and fit/adjust headlight.
-
Moving along quickly. Good stuff.
-
Had a day off yesterday and finally got the headlamp fitted and touched in odd stone chips, not much else to update yet, photo taken today...

-
Very clean! Nice colour too :P What did you use to touch up the stonechips?
-
Thanks  I bought the genuine VW touch up paint for it as it matches perfectly, I have a set of small brushes I use and paint wand things (like a tiny pointed cotton wool buds) I had those and the brushes off ebay.
-
How much was the touch up paint? I might look at getting some for my MK5 before it goes up for sale to tidy it up a bit.
-
Just under £8 :happy2: I see there are some on ebay but they are cheaper to buy from VW/TPS
-
Latest update:
New front discs and pads, new rear shocks and bump stops.
Oh undersest drawers fitted both sides, plus picked up the new underseat drawer for passenger side as the front trim was missing on the kit I bought..

Just a point to know - The drivers side part number for the drawer has been updated and, when I ordered them last year, the part that will turn up will be Black and not the grey needed for the GTi interior (if you want black happy days!!). I was told that this is the only available part and no Grey colours are left. I cancelled my order with TPS and ordered from ECS as they claimed that they had the Grey finish............ they didn't! If this is still the case a colour match can easily be made by spraying a good coat of Plastidip grey (in the UK there is only one grey available, if you can get it from the states the dark grey looks like an exact match) and then putting two light coats of Plastidip Smoke on top until the match is spot on. This is what I had to do on mine and the match is perfect. If the drivers side is available in grey again please let me know!!
-
On phone so short reply for the minute can you confirm part number you ordered from ECS?
-
I'll dig the invoice out tonight

I bought the kit from a member on here last month, the parts I purchased new were the two brackets (£3.60 each) and the passenger drawer (£41.16 ) from TPS :happy2:
-
Good man, cheers
-
Whats the GTI interior colour? Anthracite?
-
Yes mate :happy2:
Update:
Anthracite headlining ordered from TPS, coming from Germany on backorder, should have ETA Mon/Tues but likely to be 2-3weeks. Not cheap but couldn't find a mint used one.
New battery, pollen filter and fuel filter, fitted this morning

Lovely car you have there and some nice options there.

Lovely car you have there and some nice options there.
Thanks I had to hold out for one with the spec I wanted but was worth the wait :happy2:
Update: headlining arrived in much quicker than expected, it was initially on backorder when order placed last week but turned out stock was available so came in very quickly, huge VW box delivered this afternoon from TPS...

I don't know the cost of a new headlining but I imagine that's quite a lot. Brave man! It will look great! :happy2:
-
Update 1: Picked up a safety kit from VW, perfect fit and not bad for £20

Update 2: Antracite headlining and associated trims fitted, as this is now the main version of the headlining available some holes are not pre-cut.. I had to cut holes and fit the metal frames in for the vanity lights and the alarm sensor plus cutout for the rear view mirror wiring, took my time working side by side with the original and it looks factory. The only thing left to change out is the upper tailgate trim but I have the anthracite version ordered and will collect on Monday. I'm really happy with the conversion it has transformed the interior.

Sure mate I'll post it when I get in from work later tonight, I remember the price as £32 something + VAT that TPS quoted me.
EDIT: part number 1K6 867 603 G 71N
-
That's great, thanks.
-
That's great, thanks.
No worries, picked mine up yesterday £47.23 inc VAT from TPS :happy2:
-
A lot of work going in to this. Do you have a to do list?
-
Sills are sorted, it went into VW Shrewsbury Monday of last week for both sills (O/S front corner visable rust, N/S just had very slight corrosion starting on inner sill/door shut)
Agreed 50% with me to pay £116, whilst it was in they called to say they had found corrosion starting on front wings as well so were offering to fit new front wings free of charge, I picked up the car on the Friday and it looks fantastic, so glad to have the rust on the sill sorted out for winter
Bought some front mudflaps and a 12v socket cap to replace the cig lighter...

Small update; new front shocks fitted, also going to be fitting Skoda LED foglamps/DRL's. Plus I bought an Edition 30 rear bumper valance, it just needs a little plastic welding to crack by numberplate area...

Cars looking great. The colour is what I would have preferred but ended up with black. Keep it up!
-
Thanks :happy2: My last 3 cars have been black so fancied a change, after seeing a few nice grey Mk5's in the flesh I decided to hold out for the right one to come up.
I bought the Mk6 style auto headlamp switch as well (without front fog) ready to try with disabling fogs and setting up as DRL's, then fitting the Skoda LED units.
I should have a RCD510 DAB arriving mid week, need to order the 6R0 Polo aerial as decided against (for now) modding the roof to fit the 2015 6C0 Polo aerial I bought.
Hopefuly also get round to plastic welding the bumper as well at some point during the week.

Had a day off work which worked out well as RCD510 arrived this morning along with a SD card from Amazon, I also picked up the aerial adaptor from TPS in the afternoon then cracked on with installing, loving the RCD510 so far, seriously recommend if you are considering :happy2:
Oh I ran the DAB extension cable from the stereo to down under the glovebox then coiled it and taped it ready for me to run it along sill when aerial base and antenna arrive and get installed but to my surprise there is decent DAB reception from the cable alone!

Headunit looks good, much better than the standard one.
Bumper should give the car a much better look too, interested to see how you get on with the plastic welding.
-
Cheers will get pics before and after of the bumper
DAB aerial arrived today...

Yesterday afternoon I finally got round to fitting the anthracite upper tailgate trim panel so the black headlining conversion is complete
Then I finished running the DAB extension cable to the c-pillar and dropped the headlining at the rear (c-pillar trims and rear grab handles removed) to fit the Polo DAB aerial, space was a little tight but got it done so that's another job sorted
Next jobs...
Plastic weld Edition 30 bumper
Drill out 3x sheared bolts in subframe that hold undertray up at the rear
Clay, polish and wax
-
Gave the interior a clean, the drivers footwell took most of the time...

Not much to update other than on Friday week it's going into VW for cambelt and DSG oil change. Next is new tyres all round and a wheel refurb. The Edition 30 front and rear valances are half way prep'd.
A couple of new photos...

Great upgrade. :happy2:
Are you getting paddle extensions?
-
There were some fitted to it, but I swapped my standard paddles in as I'm not much a fan of the extensions. I would like to go via the route of fitting the larger OEM ones some Seat models have though :happy2:
-
I think @Mandy (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1310) sells some nice ones but not cheap. Check the traders topics.
I got black paddle extensions, cheap from China. Better to have extensions than the standard paddles.

I want your steering wheel!

Yeah sadly I'm not keen on any but the OEM ones, the Seat ones are slightly larger and illuminate like the VW ones do...

Those OEM paddles look small IMO but it's you that have to like them.
I have those tyres and I like them, just don't know how many miles I'll be able to do with them. I've made just 2000 miles, so they're like new yet. :happy2:

Was up at Lake Vyrnwy again yesterday, wish I'd got round to washing the car beforehand but took some photos while there...

Nice ride mate! Beautiful, powerful and economical :happy2:
I also had a GtSport an I loved that car.
-
Beautiful GT Sport indeed!
Just needs the side skirts, roof spoiler, front Ed. 30 spoiler and 80 mm exhaust chrome tips. I loved how the BCS exhaust tips filled the hole in the spoiler.
Now when looking at pictures of the OEM exhaust tips they seem puny.
-
Hi mate. Love the car got pretty much exactly the same plans for my gt tdi! What were the part numbers for the dab roof aerial and lead if you don't mind? Many thanks

Small update..
Met up with samx300 (thanks again for the deal, love your car mate) and bought the GTI brake set off him minus front discs and pads as those are only 10% worn on my car, so basically to change to the red calipers and also means the rears will be a size upgrade to the GTI's 286mm.
Also bought in some caliper paint to touch them up.
Next is the 18" Charleston's have gone off to Lepsons for refurb thought ideal opportunity as running steelies with winter tyres on, those are just about to come off so it's worked out quite nice really, will update with photos when the wheels are back next week.
