Title: Pick My New Car For Me !!
Post by: Wolf Burger on October 11, 2014, 08:56:53 pm
Really cant decide what to do!

Have 18K to spend maybe at a push 19K
Currently have a Mk5 Gti 2007 Black.

Shortlist is

Mk6 GTI
Mk6 Gti Ed 35
Mk 6 R

Obviously you will say Golf R but.....

Mk6 Gti- Have H&R suspension + 19 inch Monza wheels ready to go straight on this and would have money over for engine mods and exhaust to go stage 2- could also get one with leather and nav etc

Mk6 Gti Edition 35-  looked at a couple around 17 k. Paying that amount would I regret no going for an R with 4x4

Mk6 R- Its what I want regard specification  but having gone all the way to Derby VW it does look a little bland compared to the GTI. Drives like a beast but would have to be buying at the bottom end of what is available at 18K.

Any help would be appreciated  :drinking:
PS Dont mention the Golf R Mk7 (sat in one Wednesday and nearly did a white wee)

300bhp upgrades to your mk5, then plenty leftover for holidays, hookers and drugs?

Sounds like a plan. Can you turn off ESP on mk6 gti??

I've never driven a mk6 GTI but looks wise I don't really rate them tbh, if it was my money I would probably go for a newer S3 or find a way to stretch to a MK7 GTI.

Got to agree on that mate, if its a Gti i still prefer the looks of a mk5, really dont like the 6 or 7 or even the 6R! Only thing that does it for me on the 7R is performance

Deffo agree about the S3 idea and think that the 2007 onwards ones look much better than the later Golf's, 265 bhp, 4wd, 0-60 in 5.7 secs, that would be and nearly was my choice  :happy2:

Hi mate,

If I were you i'd keep the mk5, have some fun with it and keep some cash in the bank.

A great saying from my Dad...."if in doubt, do nowt". Love him for that.

I certainly don't wish to upset any mk6 owners but they really do look dated compared to the sharp looking mk7, so unless you can afford to splash out on a hot mk7, keep/modify/enjoy your current ride.

Thanks.

If it has to be a MK6 for me it would be between the ED35 & R as I would not want a TSI motor in my engine bay…

The mk6 chassis and under body bits are a mk5 tarted up. With the kind of money you're talking about, deposit for a preowned mk7 GTI and have a small finance deal, or as said seriously tweak your mk5 GTI to the exact car you want.

I'm also not a fan of the mk6 looks...
Mk7 (plus bit of finance) or an S3 I would go for...

i think its time for another big turbo project   :happy2:
I THINK i'd keep the MK5 in your situation and spend the next few months planning a big turbo setup orrrrr here's another thought... Swap the GTI for an R32 and do the above mentioned...

It's always a dangerous question when you ask for a choice to be made on a car forum on "What next..." as there'll be pros and cons to everything you list, and only you can decide ultimately which one is the one you can live with each day.

I still think the MK6 R looks really cool, although the PCP deals on the MK7 perhaps do make it seems less appealing from a logical and financial point of view.

I've seen MK7 GTI's on Autotrader for as little as £21k with sodall miles, and they of course map to 320hp ish' which is like an up-to-date Edition 30 in real terms.

If you want big power then the haldex makes important sense I suppose.

When you get serious, show a forward interest and go and test drive your list?  :happy2:

From your list I would go for the Edition 35. I think it's a lovely car and is more special than the others.

Just stick with a minty example of mk5 Gti as personally none of the mentioned cars are worth 2,3 or even 4 times more and certainly not twice or 3 times as good! Mk6 Gti is a worse car for the financial outlay in comparison to a mk5 which is an absolute bargain cracking motor now for the price etc
Thats what im doing and pocket the money for something better like property  :happy2:

Thanks for the opinions guys.

Just to stir the pot further

Love the R32- been to look at one today. Running costs would be massive
Audi S3- The car is fantastic but the look of the car just doesn't do it for me.
Golf R Mk 6 - Another great car but so bland especially on the interior.

For the money anyone tried a Subaru or Evo?

Not an easy choice at all...

For me the GTi mk6 is not in the running, I can't get involved in the timing chain issue that VW doesn't think exists?

The Ed35 looks promising, but still appears expensive compared to the best Ed30 and the cheapest Mk7 Gti.

Ed35 just doesn't seem to have the following of the Ed30/Pirelli?

If an R fits the bill, then you obviously have to consider the S3.

I've done the 4wd turbo thing.....maybe you need to tick that experience off of the list?

The good thing is, if you think and hold out a little longer, you should soon be able to find an early Mk7 close to your price point.

With the best mk 5 Gti's close to 50% of the Mk7 price, even though it's older the 5 is still a sound buy, which is probably why they the best examples are holding their money.

I think the GTI7 looks special, better than the 7R imo; front bumper, front grill etc.  The 7R needs a colour, think they look especially bland in black and white - needs the blue/red.

If you can stretch to the GTI7 the whole thing is a real step up from the Mk5/6 - as others have said a quick ECU flash and you're north of 300 with a lighter car than the Mk5/6.
It's 2014 Ed30/Ed35 with less weight and loads more refinement.

The Eddy reminds me of the Intel i7 920/930 series of CPU, stock they were about 2.6Ghz, but easily clocked to 4Ghz making them able to keep up with more modern hardware for years, and still not slow to day.  There comes a point though...

The new platform is about 100kg less iirc.  Unless I read it wrong somewhere - there was emphasis on making the thing lighter for all the good things that brings.

im finding 1370kg belive thats similar to a mk5.. very impressive for a modern car indeed
