Title: Changing Car Battery
Post by: akbarirfan on October 15, 2014, 10:37:13 am
Hi All,

I have what you might call CANBUS-phobia - the GTI is my first CANBUS car and I don't want to mess anything up!!

I have a Varta E44 waiting to be installed - is there anything special I need to do? Or is it a case of remove the old battery and stick the new one in as I have done with non-CANBUS cars?

Is access a pain too?

Serious n00b question I know!!  :signLOL:

Thanks,

Irfan

If you open your bonnet and look you'll see access is rather quite good.
Easy job...

Yes access looks good from the top - are there any securing bolts at the base of the battery?

Not had a chance to have a proper look!

Thanks

Some cars have a small clamp at the bottom of the battery to hold it in place. is a 5 minute job anyway.
Have a look  :happy2:

Be aware that the alarm may go off when you remove the battery terminals and also when you replace them. So have your key fob handy to turn it off  :happy2:

All done, took a bit longer than expected due to dropping the 13mm Socket deeper into the engine bay!!

Quite a few lights came on upon initial start up, drove about 50cm and they all went out apart from the ESP which needed turning on.

The car feels very different, a lot smoother and starts up more enthusiastically.

Sorry to hijack thread, didn't want to clutter the forum.

Just replaced my battery with a Bosch s5. Fitted very easily BUT the battery isn't as tall as the previous one making it impossible to fit the connections properly.

I need to raise it up slightly, has anyone any advice or encountered the same issue?

I would suggest your Bosch S5 isn't the right one.
S5 007 is the one you need.

Thats the one ive got 'Bosch S5 007 74AH'

The dims are the same as my old except the height. I've managed to raise the battery up temporarily but do need a permanent solution!

Yeah, my S5 "James Bond" went in fine as well. I assume it is a MK5 golf you are fitting it to?
