Title: To DSG or not to DSG?
Post by: Dave7692 on October 17, 2014, 12:47:44 pm
Hi guys,

I'm looking to move on my MK5 TDI soon but will be staying in the VW (and possibly the MK5 ) fold.  I'm considering a DSG gearbox and have done a bit of looking in to the pros and cons of them.  Currently I'm looking towards a 170 TDI Scirocco but regardless of the car (Golf MK5/6, 'Rocco or A3) I'll be getting something with that 170 Engine in it.

Thus far I can see the pros are, automatic and manual modes, bit more relaxed driving if doing a lot of motorway travelling and not needing to upgrade clutch for Stage 2 remap.

As for the cons, relatively expensive service every 40k, a few reliability issues (likelihood reduced if service is carried out as recommended) and that some consider it a bit boring.

So at the moment I'm thinking it might be better for me but is there anything I'm missing?  Only thing I can think of on a daily basis is that maybe parking (particularly parallel) might be a bit of a faff with the paddles and that but I guess thats just a case of getting used to it.  Its the sort of thing that you can't really decide based off of a 10 minute test drive.

Anyway, opinions either way are greatly received.

The 170 engine in the MK6 / Rocco is MUCH better than in the mk5. The mk5 is quite troublesome with injectors & DPF problems being very common

Thanks for the replies thus far guys.

Yeah I've heard about the issues with the MK5 170 TDI, my parents also had trouble with the injectors on their Passat (which I assume is the same engine?) thats why I'm leaning towards spending that bit more money and moving up to a MK6/Scirocco with the Scirroco currently leading the chase.  I hope to maybe have it all sorted by Christmas but it can always be a bit slow trying to sell a car in the month or so leading up to Xmas.

my mk5 DSG has been spot on so far (touches wood  :signLOL:)

From what I have read it seems certain years were worse than others.

My next car will be DSG, why wouldn't you.

I think the only reason you wouldn't go DSG Is if like me you prefer the driving experience of a manual. Beyond that its more economical easier and smoother.

I moved from a manual Editon30 to a DSG Golf 'R' and I love it,you won't be using paddle's(you can't) whilst parking as they are more suited for switching gear's when giving it some bean's!Go ahead and do it as you won't regret it. :happy2:

I agree that manual is a more involving drive for the most part, DSG is much better than previous offerings though and the launch control is a nice feature.

I love my DSG car I've had no problems just make sure it's serviced on time and you'll be fine.

I definitely see the pro's of DSG such as launch control and rapid changes. For me though unless you have serious power (lambo's Ferrari's ect) then DSG is a bit too easy and I don't feel like the I'm doing the driving and its not a rewarding. Its the same as 4WD for me, you can go faster but I would rather go slower and have to work for it.

Totally... this would be my only concern as I'm debating going from ED30 to a Golf R DSG. I guess I'll just have to extract some extra power from the R to compensate, the APR stage 3 car was pretty exciting!

Thanks for the opinions guys, I get what you're saying in terms of it being a less engaging driving experience, however I'll be using the car as a daily driver for around 60-70 miles per day minimum so I think the DSG might be better suited to that.

I probably will end up getting it Stage 2 mapped eventually so it'll be pushing just over 200BHP but I'll see how it goes.  I was impressed when I test drove one but as I said above its hard to assess whether there would be minor things that would annoy you when driving one day to day.

I had a similar dilemma when buying my GTI,

It boiled down to 'can I afford to fix it'... The answer, for me, was no unfortunately...

Another point to consider...although you are doing lots of miles, if most of them are at a constant speed you won't change gear much in manual or DSG.

Don't get me wrong, DSG is a lot of fun and the opportunity to be lazy in auto mode is hard to resist.

I went manual in the end and don't regret it  :drinking:

Another one for DSG here. Only had it a couple of weeks but love it so far.

I'm on my second Golf DSG, definitely the way forward. The gearbox seems to suit both the GTI engine and 2.0 TDI CR exceptionally well. Makes driving more relaxing whilst still retaining strong performance and economy.

hated dsg!

I do all town driving, car wanted to be in 6th gear everywhere, not a quick as manual to react, just not for me I suppose

id say borrow one for the weekend to decide what you like,

The CR170 goes very well with DSG, you'll probably get the XDS diff too if it's an A3/MK6 GTD/Scirocco. That helps a tiny bit more than you think it would, I've tried mine on track and I was pleasantly surprised.

I've got a CR170 6MT manual but I definitely need a short shift kit for fast changes  :sad1: :booty:

Don't expect the manual box to be as trusty and fluid as other TFSI/TSI etc cars you may have driven.

DSG for me!
Test drove a Pirelli manual before - it did drive beautifully, but my ED30 wasn't advertised as DSG when I looked, so was initially disappointed.
That disappointment melted away very quickly on the test drive. As I've said before on here, the only thing I miss is being able to blip the throttle and miss gears on acceleration / deceleration (i.e. 1,2,4 or 6,4,2...)

I drive my DSG in manual mode most of the time - gets away from the shifting at 1500rpm's, and gives a nice amount of engine braking and control coming back down the gears.

Still, love the option to move to lazy mode in traffic - my old mkiv with its sachs clutch was so heavy I nearly got cramp. Now I'm older I felt 'an auto GTI' would be ok. The fact that it changes gear faster than I could in a manual, and the clutch packs don't need changing for stage 2+ are (IMHO) a decent trade off for the extra TLC (oil changes) needed.

Both have their merits for sure - enjoy choosing!!

I have a bit of a love hate with my DSG as was said earlier that when around town it will never be in the gear you want so keeps changing up and down  :fighting: so you almost need to use manual but when in traffic it is perfect as you don't have the clutch pedal. Another bonus is using the paddles if you want to get from A to B a little faster plus you get a nice little fart like noise when changing gear

Personal preference...

My old edition 30 was DSG and my current GTI is manual. I enjoy both. Think DSG is suited more to high power cars but that's not to say manual isn't...

There will be some days u wish u had DSG and other days u wish u had 3 pedals and a stick. Not many things more rewarding than throwing togethr a series of perfect shifts whilst on it  :signLOL:

I'm a total DSG convert. I have had mine just over a year and it suits me. I would say my one annoyance is reverse which can be pants if you aren't really gentle with it. Passengers always comment on how smooth it is. The little farts on a hard up shift are brilliant!

I drove a 14 plate Audi A6 2.0tdi Ultra 190ps (I'm not sure what was so 'ultra' about it!) which had the 7 speed DSG (S Tronic) box. I wasn't particularly impressed with that though - it seemed to feel really strained as the gearbox wanted hold onto the revs far too long for a diesel when you put your foot down. It was incredibly smooth and lovely, but really highlighted that it was a big old car with a 4 cylinder diesel up front.

I've not driven a golf/scirocco diesel with a DSG so can't comment on that exactly.
