They've just put that engine into a current gen Passat with the 2.0tdi and 4Motion, 240ps and autocar (I think it was) seemed to rate it recently, so it should be even better in a lighter more nimble shell. I think you can buy that Passat now or certainly very shortly.

A map or box to 300ps ish' and 480ft torque would make it very tasty in the MK7. Also sets up nice model progression for the later marks too

I had considered waiting for the Golf R to come down in price in a few years before making the jump, but now I may get one of these instead. It's a great idea for someone who travels a lot but also wants a high performance hatchback. If you're not bothered by chasing big horsepower then the GTD seems to make more sense.

I'm not sure the engine offers anything over the current GTI in hatchback form.

It wont be more economical and has more parts to go wrong.

Is is just me that thinks the new GTI and R don't look different enough from all the other new golf models? I think the GTI should have been styled like the R and the R should have been the R400

Nope, I agree... In that respect I prefer the mk6 R, that R400 though :-)

I think the gti looks more aggressive than the r to be fair !

I'm not sure what the diesel r will be like but I just drove the gtd last week and it was the most disappointing test drive I've had ! Where are these horses vw say it has really felt like it had 130bhp, I was all set for buying it aswell !

I have to look twice at the mk7 GTD at times thinking it was an new R... I dare say that the new S3 easier to spot.

It might need a DPF delete and a remap before it moves the way you like.
