Hi guys,
Does anyone have or know where to locate the V9 Map disc that comes with the speed cameras pre-installed for the RNS 510?
I have a B unit so the firmware is really old and can't import POIs from a memory card, but there was a special V9 version made, but I have no idea where to buy it.
Cheers!
-
Previously I had a B unit with firmware 3970 and V10 maps. You can safely go to that firmware and keep installing new maps.

At the moment I have V11 maps with a POI file made by me with POInspect0r. I can get updated speed cameras and traffic stop sites POI and put them in my file.
-
Did that not make your system lag at all going to such a high firmware?
I've been told if I want to update, not to go beyond 2810
-
No, the newer firmwares are faster than the older ones. At least that's my experience. When I bought the B unit it came with firmware 2XXX, I can't remember. Then I upgraded to 3810 modified version. After that to 3970.
The firmware 5238 modified version is compatible with all RNS-510 units. If I hadn't buy a P version, I'd upgrade to that version most likely. You can get it from www.gpsunderground.com.
-
I did say you'd be fine with a firmware update.
-
I think I'm going to have to go for it and to the upgrades then..
I'm just going by what vRS CARL told me. He's the guy that wrote the tutorial on how to upgrade firmware for this forum.
-
Follow the instructions from this topic: http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/20308-all-available-firmware-rns510-22.html (http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/20308-all-available-firmware-rns510-22.html)
Jomafi and others know a lot about RNS-510.
-
Ive had firmware 3810 on many B units and found it to be very stable and quick.
-
I have the modded 4020 on my A with no issue. To fit V10/V11 maps it'll need the 60/35/5 partitioning
-
By modded firmware, is that just the firmware that is used when manually updating?
-
Standard VW firmware comes with 50% maps - 25% music - 25% POI partitions on the HDD. Modded versions are just modded to change the partition size to get more music on and less POI etc, and a few other things enabled (like video in motion. developer menu, etc.) There's a modded firmware which has larger partition for maps as the older units have a smaller hard drive (thus the maps don't fit on sometimes).
-
Ah I see, that makes sense.
I'm guessing I'm going to get the power drain issue from upgrading, as my car is an 05 plate
-
There's a software fix for that. Or a new canbus gateway.
-
Slightly confused, my unit says I'm on 0900, but reading the update notes for 1100 makes me believe otherwise..
1100 mentions bluetooth audio and a new fader amongst other things. I have both of those things already.. but it defiantly says SW Version 0900.
I was advised by vRS Carl not to jump straight to a high firmware, I need to work my way up, starting with 1100 but all the links I'm finding for it are dead and no longer active :sad1:
-
Where are you getting the details from for the versions of your unit?
-
From holding down the set up button, I have the hidden menu enabled
-
It just seems as if my SW version doesn't match up with what is actually installed
-
Upgrade your version and get your problem solved (except the battery drain issue, that you need to test to see if the fix works for you).
Just use a modified update version (and not a factory version that deletes you coding) and you won't need to code your unit with VCDS. That's what I've been doing and never needed to code mine.
-
Can somebody do a update disc for my rns it has old software on there I believe and I'm not that great at downloading the right stuff myself.

Easier said than done when all the links for the firmware come back with 'file not found' because the links are so old
I need modified versions of 1100, 2680, 3810 and 3970. I've been told I can't just jump from 0900 to 3970. I've spent a while looking and come across loads of old forum threads on the topic, but every single link is broken :sad1:
-
You can safely jump to modified 3810.
Your unit will be completely formatted so I don't see the benefit of doing those older firmwares.
-
http://rnsfirmware.com/downloads/RNS510_Firmware/Europe/EU_4020a_FW_60_35_5.ISO
This has the new partitioning which is necessary to put v10/11 maps on units with a 30GB HDD.
You'll need to put maps, POI and all music back on.
I have this FW on my A unit by the way.

I'll take your word for it then :happy2: I was jsut purely going by what vRS Carl told me, this will be the first time updating my firmware so I'm literally just taking into account what others are telling me. But you amongst others have said it will be fine, so I'll go ahead and get it done!

Cheers for the link buddy! I am downloading now and will update this afternoon. Does it lag at all, or does it all run smoothly?
IF MY UNIT GETS BRICKED I WILL BE RUNNING A COLLECTION OF £50 FROM EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED :signLOL: :signLOL:
-
The firmware update is done with the ignition off. So don't put the key in the ignition.
-
I have only ever had my A unit but it is no slower than any aftermarket stereo I have used
-
The key will remain out, cheers!
Just popped down to staples to spend £13 on a pack of blank discs.. funnily enough they had sold out of single discs.. :signLOL:
Time to burn it to disc!
-
Update complete, seems to be running faster than it was originally :signLOL:
When will I know if I have the battery drain issue? Will it be dead in a few hours, or is it an overnight thing? Or should I just assume I have the issue and do the fix for it? I don't fancy getting stuck at work tomorrow :signLOL:
Cheers
-
Depends on how your battery is atm. It can be hours or days. :signLOL:
I would do the fix and have some jumper cables at hand... :scared:
-
You should fix the battery drain. And next time I tell you to do something......
You may now install the new maps disc you have. :happy2:
-
I'll run the fix just in case then! All seems well, but my bluetooth module seems inactive?
Also, am I right in thinking that I should now have the feature which displays what song is being played over the Radio?
Viking, that disc got chucked :signLOL: But now I updated I'm able to add them myself via the memory card
-
Yeah, radio text available with fw 4020.
Not sure about your Bluetooth module. I don't have one. Viking should be able to help you.
-
Awesome, is it automatic or do I have to enable it somewhere? Just had a quick test but it simply just displayed the Station name.
I'm hoping it will just start working haha, if it doesn't work by tomorrow I'll shout for help :signLOL:
-
Radio text starts at 4120.
Personally, I would just update the gateway. They aren't expensive these days.
-
Oh, sorry for the mistake. It has been long time since I've checked the features of the firmwares.
Upgrade to 4120 modified and you'll have the option to activate radio text in the Radio Extras button.
-
Ah I see, I'll just go without it then I think considering I've only just updated to 4020 :signLOL:
My gateway may have already been updated when the previous owner put the RNS 510 in, I don't know. But just to be on the safe side I'll do the software fix, if it's a fix it's a fix
Cheers for all the input
-
If you check the part number we'll know if the CAN is new.
-
If you check the part number we'll know if the CAN is new.
*NOOB ALERT* where do I find the CAN? :signLOL:
I just tried installing the fix for it but was displayed with this message:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs27.postimg.org%2F9setfuhjz%2FIMG_9097.jpg&hash=c26dc6425935e0613558ef87a60bf9615fdaf0f1) (http://postimg.org/image/9setfuhjz/)
I was tempted to press the 3 buttons then try again, but thought I'd ask just in case haha. On a plus side, my bluetooth is up and running again
-
It's normal. Just follow the instructions.
I didn't know until someone explained in another topic but the CAN changed position, so it depends on the year your Golf was made.
Here's a vid:
-
So I press the 3 buttons and away I go? Sorry for all the daft questions, just the thought of bricking my unit hurts :signLOL:
I'll leave that as a last resort, the software fix seems a lot easier, quicker and cheaper :happy2:
-
Done the canbus fix, made some weird noises through my speakers at random points but all is well :signLOL:
-
Nice! :happy2:
-
Right, since doing the canbus software fix, my media hasn't worked.
Pressing the 'Media' button gives the message 'no medium available'. I can still connect my phone via bluetooth, but can't stream, can't access my memory card, or the rns harddrive.
Any suggestions?
-
Check your CAN Gateway part number.
Update it if needed and update your firmware without worries.
-
My firmware is updated, but now my media doesn't work. It just says 'no medium available'. Surly that wont be due to my CAN gateway?
-
When you used the CAN gateway fix you downgraded some files of your firmware so it wouldn't drain your battery if you have an old CAN gateway. Now you need to re-install the new firmware if you want your RNS-510 to work 100%.
If you update the firmware and your CAN is old, you'll have the battery drain issue.
Hence, check if you need to update your CAN. If it's new enough, you don't need the fix. If it's old, you need to get a new one to not have any problems with the new firmwares.
-
Ah i see. I assumed that doing the software fix for the battery drain was a straight forward fix, so I didn't need to updste my can gayeway. I didn't realise it would stop certain things working.
-
It wasn't supposed to upset other parts of your RNS-510 but the fix doesn't work well for everyone. :\
-
I'll try a soft reset see if that does anything.
If i have to change my canbus, does that lose alterations made through vag com?
-
I reinstalled the new firmware but I still get the message 'No Medium Available' when pressing the Media button :sad1:
-
Hi all newbie to the gang
I wanted to find out if you faced any issues with battery drain after the update. I have a 2006 mk5 1.6FSI and i haven't yet checked the canbus but ive been reading that theres modified versions to assist with upgrades. Are there any links for updates for maps and modififed firmwares. Ive been on the hunt and i managed to be directed to this page as there was a link for the 4020a update. Been racking my brain over this since i installed the rns into my golf. I cant get access into the software version so im going to take a risk to update it to 2760 then work my way up. Also are there any reasonably priced canbus's which can be programmed on ebay?
-
Welcome!
I didn't have any battery drain issues, but I did however do the battery drain fix just to be on the safe side.
I have a V10 map disc with cameras if you want it.. as well as a disc for suitable firmware. I jumped straight to the upgrade on a B unit and was fine
