I've seen over the past while that this is quite a common issue.
The coolant temperature should reach 90degrees after a few miles of driving from cold but when it fails it tends to only reach 90deg when idling in traffic or doing city driving.
I currently have this problem which judging by my symptoms I imagine is my main thermostat.
Note - I have a manual so don't have the DSG sensor
I had alignment booked in with VW on Friday so they said they'd take a look at the main thermostat for free and reported that it was working fine. This happened to be after congested city driving so when I arrived at VW my gauge was at 90deg.
I tried to explain this to them but I really got little to no help on the matter.
I don't want to shell out €400 to replace the main thermostat nor do I want to spend 6 hours under the engine trying to replace it myself until I can guarantee what the problem is.
Does anyone know how I can determine this? Or if it could be anything else?
-
I'd like to know how they managed to prove that the thermostat was working fine as it's purely a mechanical device; it's not controlled electrically like other 'valves' on the car..
My money would still be on the stat being stuck in the fully open position :happy2:

Good question but I actually was looking at this. With VCDS you can give the thermostat a code and tell it to open/close effectively. If it responds it's working, if it doesn't it's not.
It won't give an error if you scan as it doesn't provide feedback but if you tell it to do something and it fails you know it's broken.

Faulty temp sensor??
Common on vw's

That was original thought but after some digging on the forum it would appear due to my symptoms I'm most likely looking at my main thermostat.
-
Anybody have a part number for the coolant temp sensor? Mine gets upto 90 finebut then occasionally drops and then goes back to 90....garage I got it from said they had changed the thermostat so hopefully not then. Unless they lied.... Thanks :)
-
I've got a temp sensor I never used it you want it...£15? I had the same issue with my car and it definitely sounds like it's the main thermostat to me
-
The one that goes on the intake side? Gets to temp fine but drops and then goes back to 90? Got a receipt for new thermostat so don't know whether to take it back to them or not hmmm
-
Yeah that's the one I've got spare, but to be honest it does sound like mine which was fixed when I had the main thermostat replaced
-
Cheers I will let you know if I need one :) probably will ring the garage tomorrow where I bought the car....they were meant to change the thermostat. Just been for a drive out and it was all good till going steady in 4th then it dropped to 70degrees and slowly went back to 90 haha.

Did you have vw do this or did you do it yourself?
How did you/they diagnose it?
-

Is it a new one you have with a new seal? Thinking of changing it anyway as today to work and back it seemed fine. The garage are finding the parts invoice to check what they have had changed....
-
Changed the grey sensor today and everything seems to be the same....is it normal for the gauge to say 90 and then in the torque app the coolant temp says 77? Also is there only 2 coolant sensors on the gti? Sorry for all the questions!
-
I had the same issue and fixed it by changing the main stat.
My Fiscon says ~75c+ when the cluster gauge says 90c.
If it fluctuates then I'd say it is failing.
-
Ah boooo, garage must not of changed it when i bought the car then......great! Just as i thought so best get it booked it for a change. Do you know if the green sensor is the one on the actual thermostat?
-
I should say that before swapping the stat, my temps were getting to 65c max on Fiscon.
This is what it looks like, though a GTI has a different part number to an ED30 (F not H on the end?)

Ah right hmmm. Got home after a 15min drive 6 miles ish and the app said 77degrees and the gauge 90. It does the thing where it drops when driving and sits at 90 in traffic. Never goes above 90 and just drops then returns. Annoying me now! Haha

Let me know how you get on with the garage.
Part that was changed, price, time it took and anything worth noting.
I really have to do it but I'm putting it off every time.

Sounds like the issue I had: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,80793.0.html
Fixed with a new thermostat

I will do, sorting it in the next week or two as its messing with my ocd.....haha
Rang awesomegti today and they quoted £260 just on the labour :sad1: going to see my local mechanic wednesday

Thanks :happy2: will do the coasting test too

think I'm in the same boat. Sits at 90 when sitting in traffic, once I get on to the motorway etc it drops to 70.
VW Quoted £200 all in with a courtesy car :).
Local Indy is £100 labour plus I have to source the part.
AwesomeGTI seem to be a bit of a rip sometimes.
-
Awesome GTI also forgot to plug my MAP sensor back in so it drove like a dog for 35 miles home :stupid:
-
Not bad! Rang vw today and quoted 162 all in :o still can't believe it..... but going in tomorrow to double check it's the right stat and book it in!
Been to awesome gti before and they have always been great... just like to shop around for prices first as they are 45miles from me
-
After a ridiculous quote from VW I decided to leave the sensor but now I'm doing 300mile round trips weekly and sitting at 75degrees so I'm sure my efficiency is terrible. Getting 31mpg sitting at 120km/hr for 2 hours. Is that right?
Booked into George Dalton on Wednesday for a few bits including this for €225 all in.
-
What did they quote you? Does sound a bit low but not sure myself as my stats always been dodgy and never seen above 32mpg.

€400 which is ridiculous!
-
Has getting this fixed sorted anyone's mpg/performance?
-
I think overall I get a couple of MPG more but more importantly, the engine is running at the correct temperature.
If there is any doubt your stat is faulty, I recommend swapping it out.
-
Pretty sure it needs done never really see 90. Usually get about 30 to the gallon on a half hour trek to work.
-
Right guys....took mine to VW for the thermostat today. Dropped it off at 1pm.... get a call at 2pm saying that its going to take longer than they thought and probably won't be done for today. They told me its because they did the quote wrong and only put labour down for changing the in-line thermostat and not the main thermostat. So right part wrong labour.....nothing is ever straight forward! So no car for work tomorrow... and the bill will be more than the original quote! Whats your opinions on this? Anyone else had this with a garage before? Depending on what they say i may go ape s**t as i cant be affording a big bill :scared:
-
Got mine back yesterday and it now stays at 90 solid after about 3 mins from cold :). They also took the liberty of changing coil pack under a recall warranty thing. All for a cool £200. Well worth it. Car seems even more snappier now :). Glad I did it.

And that was the main thermostat at a Vw Main dealer. Thought I got a decent deal.

Sounds promising then as mine never hit temp even after 20mins haha! Did you pay £200 all it then? Main dealer? I got quoted £162 but looks like it will be more now....
-
202 to be precise. Mine did sit at 90 for a while in traffic. Never longer than a few minutes. Sat at 70 most of the time. VW in Mallusk (Northern Ireland). With a courtesy car for the day. Left in at 8am and done for 4pm :). Can't praise them enough.

I was quoted about £160 and I had to source the part. No courtesy car either. So with the free coil pack included it's win win.

£160 from a local 3rd party garage*

Nice one! Same as mine used to do that so should be fixed tomorrow. They haven't offered me a courtesy car...but if its £200 i don't mind paying £40quid more. Shall see! Good to know what someone else paid at a dealer cheers :happy2:
-
No worries. Thought it was pretty damn good. They did mention they ordered the wrong thermostat but had the right one from TPS in minutes :D

I paid £224 all in at a vw main dealer so sounds about right
-
Got the car back today and they honoured their quote so all good! Massive difference now with the temp....gets to 90 in no time and stays there as it should! :happy2:
-
Good stuff!!

Hi guys, i know this a very old thread, old cars are still around, so i am having this temp issue with my mk6 golf TDi 1.6 DSG, I brought the car couple weeks ago sold as seen, it get s up to temp after ages , the when i turn on the interior heaters the temp drops to 70odd,,, if i give the car some power it will warm up again , so i thought it must be the thermostat , I found a garage that i thought was honest who quoted me £130 to change it,,
So today they say they changed it and when i went to collect it they first tried to charge me more money as said they had to remove fuel rail and manifold,, I thought this could be done with just removing the throttle body and some decent tools according to Utube, anyway i got the car back after explaining i was not going to pay any extra,,,,,
I drove up road and the car is exactly the same as before it went in there,
I popped the bonnet and its difficult to see but the thermostat did not look new, i am now thinking i have been ripped off to the sum of £130 , and worse of all my car is not repaired, I am going to a friends tomorrow who has a camera that is on a cable and we shall inspect if the part is new ,,,, I was not given the old part back when i collected the car, although i didnt think to ask for it.
Any one have any idea if this could be somthing else, also if the car is sitting and ticking over the temp will go down to about 65-70
any wise minds
thanks
