I've just picked up my new Golf 2.0 SDI 54 plate and I'm currently getting used to the sound it makes and other then the standard Diesel sound there's one strange sound as bellow, has anyone got any experience of the sound or know what might be causing it?

Whoom Whoom Whoom Whoom
The resonating sound comes from the front of the car and only appears between 35-65 and the sound increases with volume as my speed increases past 35, there is no sound bellow 35 and above 70 it just sounds like a constant whmmmmmmmmmmm in a similar pitch.
Things I've checked and have not had any effect:
Turning makes no difference to the sound at any speed
With the clutch engaged the sound is still there
With the clutch in and car in neutral the sound is there
Braking doesn't emphasize the noise in any way
Checked Tyre pressures and tread wear is even
Checked Mirrors and windscreen wipers to check it's not the wind vibrating anything
Also to note:
There's a slight correlating vibration that can be felt in the footwells (not sure if it's just resonation)
No vibration in the wheel, pedals, gear stick or dash.
The handling and brakes are fine and the car pulls smoothly through the rev range
The sound is consistent in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears
Anyone have any ideas on this, other then the strange noise I'm really happy with it so far, just hope it's nothing too serious.

Well after checking my rear tyres there is indeed uneven wear:

I've checked the front tyres and they don't seem to be showing similar uneven wear, would the rear tyres being as above cause the noise to seem like it's coming from the front?

New rear tyres and rear shockers is the way forwarded!

So would that wear would most likely cause the noise?
New rear shocks?

I suspect that the shockers aren't pushing the tyres onto the road hard enough - that's the affect of skipping along the road to cause that type of wear pattern.
Do a bit digging on Google and see if it helps you out.

I've done a bit of goggling and the most common thing seems to be the toe and caster with the consistent recommendation to find somewhere with a hunter machine.
I'm currently looking for a new set of alloys so I might as well fit/align them, put new tyres on and see how that goes before changing the shocks.
Does anyone have an recommendations on tyres, looking to spend around £60 a pop + fitting.

I think I've got to the bottom of the sound now, I picked up some alloys last night with much better tyres on and the noise was much worse.
Also the noise was worse when turning away from the source and is now behaving exactly like bearings failing :evilgrin:
Going to pop into the local "I think honest" garage on Monday and see what they can do.
Is it better to have both sides changed at the same time for even wear, and how much inc labour on avg has it cost (I'm estimating around £100 for parts and £70 for labour)?
