Hi, this is my first post so apologies if this has been debated before.
My question is: now I have my new gti it's will be filled with super unleaded but is the supermarket stuff any different than shell/bp? I have heard that tesco is a very good compromise.
Many thanks for you help

IMO I think Shell V-Power Nitro Plus is the best, higher octane than all the rest runs at over 100 due to a additive that's in the fuel, I only ever use this and will continue to only use this :happy2: :driver:

Shell and Tesco both do 99RON super unleaded. Stick with those two brands and you will be fine.
GTI runs so so so much better on 99RON than basic 95RON. This was also proven on Fifth Gear where they tested every supermarket fuel at R-Tech and compared the results on the Dyno :happy2:

+2
Vpower or tesco99

Yep, Momentum or V-Power Nitro for me. Momentum is a lot cheaper but Shell is a lot handier.

Vpower over here as well, also the addatives are supposed to help keep the engine clean as well.

Mine loves tesco 99 Ron goes like a rocket !!!!
-
As above, V-Power Nitro+ 99RON is the best if you can afford it, but Tescos Momentum 99RON is a good cheaper alternative.

Never used anything but V-power since owning her for 3 years now, including the time where we were somewhere we'd never been to before (can't recall where we were ) nearly running on fumes and i still insisted that we find a shell station which had V Power. Had we run out i'd have gladly walked however far necessary to get some V-power  :happy2:
I've been curious about Tesco Momentum but never ever got around to trying it...

Tesco 99
I'd wager it's Shell rebranded
Like, Castrol Edge is Quantum... why waste money!??
-
ive always ran shell v power for its cleaning properties mainly but ive ran a fair few quids worth of momentum through it and felt no difference tbh
-
I've no experience with petrol in Mk5's but, for what it's worth...
There is a guy on the Saab forum I frequent who works for Shell and Nitro+ is NOT supplied to anybody else and it is mixed at a specific refinery, not additives added at the gate as the tanker leaves the site.
On my turbo Saab I used to run Tesco Momentum 99 until I got caught and needed to fill up with no Tesco's nearby I went to a Shell garage. 50 miles after filling basicly empty tank I noticed a difference in mid range torque. Blind test because I did not know about all the additional lubricants in Nitro+ at that time.

I've been using Esso super unleaded as well as Tesco Momentum fuel and I've noticed that the Esso fuel gives better fuel economy but the Tesco just feels better when giving it the beans. When I say more miles, I'm talking 3-5mpg around town. I used Esso to drive from Essex to Plymouth and I've since done 310 miles since I topped up and still got well over quarter of a tank left.
-
When I bought my gti I used momentum from day one and it definitely made a difference in performance and smoothness etc so i think it was being run on 95 previously. I have used a tank of shell nitro plus and tbh I couldn't tell the difference. This is on a stage 1 k03 gti

Most custom maps for the ECU will optimise higher octane fuel further than stock maps, so well worth it if you have a mapped ECU.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll stay away from the typical supermarket stuff but tesco 99ron seems to be valued here so I'll try that first.
