Title: DSG concerns, what's yours like?
Post by: Mickmk4 on October 28, 2014, 06:19:03 pm
So I have an edition 30  it's. 2007 on a 56 reg and a DSG gearbox. It needed a new mechatronic unit a couple of month ago so I had a new one ordered and replaced along with oil, filters etc. the old unit used to kangaroo in reverse and jump as you were pulling away in 1st. Anyway I got the car back just over 2 weeks ago and all seemed well until I approached a roundabout and slowed down but seen a gap so went, at this point I was probably doing around 10mph and it jumped into 1st and almost snapped my neck, it has calmed down a lot since then and adapted to my drive style but it still does it and more so in manual without me downshifting to first, the other thing I was not to sure on was how long it takes to engage the clutch whe you remove your foot from the brake mine seems to take a second or so to start rolling? Is all this normal and am I just being paranoid? Or should I go back to the garage with it?
Many thanks in advance  :happy2:

Sounds fairly normal to me. Both cars I've had with DSG have done the same, especially dropping into 1st or 2nd when rolling onto a roundabout/junction and you give the throttle a tickle.

Taking a second to start moving after lifting off the brake is probably the hill assist kicking in, does it on mine sometimes but more pronounced if I'm pressing firmer on the brake beforehand

I don't drop into 1st anymore, if the revs drop low enough it will go into 1st anyway.

If you are at a stand still lightly press the break and get her creeping. Then when you hit the accelerator clutch will already be engaged.

It will roll back on a hill until the clutch starts to bite, I can't remember the hill holder ever working to be honest I always thought it didn't have one

Not sure if hill assist is standard or an option but if yours rolls backwards on a hill sounds like you don't have it as mine will never roll back

Seems similar to mine and my friends ED30 DSG's. However i'm fairly sure that the Mk5 GTI's etc never had hill assist!

Not sure if mine has a problem, standard car with DSG , 56k miles and had two  VW DSG  gear oil changes in its life. Only issue i have had is some Jerkiness pulling off in traffic and sometimes the car cannot decide between 1st and 2nd at very slow speeds so get a thump.

I Asked VW to Flash the ECU with latest firmware but they refused. Have there been any software updates to DSG since late 2007.  New G Version DV fitted last month.

Im tempted by a Remap with DSG software but with full VW Service History any goodwill if my mechatronic fails goes bye bye.

Mine will sometimes drop into 1st at low speeds when I put my foot down and it gives you a bit of drama and a thump in the back, its irritating but I havent thought anything of it really. It does some odd things sometimes!  :signLOL:

But does a DSG remap make the box smarter in its use of gears ?

All of the problems experiences in this thread i have aswell, i had my dsg box mapped to attempt to circumvent this, box was much faster ecen around town and at slow speeds but the drive got more uncomfortable as time went by.
Ive had the dsg map taken off now, much smoother but as before thumps around sometimes, jumps into first, lots of drama then back into 2nd, 3rd etc.I had a dog bone mount insert fitted the other day, improvement of about 50% id say with the thuds and thumps, dont tend to notice it too much now.
i had a new gearbox from vw under warranty in 2013 along with clutch packs, mechatronics as the box was bangy in manual mode, but even afterbthe box was replaced it had different characteristscs even after it self learnt, so i gave up after that.
