Post by: rosscoe63 on November 01, 2014, 06:18:43 pm
stripped down today to investigate a knocking noise and found about 5mm play in the rack arms :-(

Cars only done 50k, appreciate Ive gotta replace it but can any one shed any ideas on what would cause something like this to wear???

thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure there was a recall on steering columns in earlier mk5 Golfs. Might be worth investigating...

I think it was related to a senor within the column that meant the whole unit had to be replaced. There is a 54 plate steering rack for sale on this forum at the moment as luck would have it... Give DANBOY66 a shout if you need it, he recently broke a whole GTI so got loads of parts.

If the play is in the arms then the arms can be replaced. If the play is in the rack (more likely) then the rack will need changing.

I always think my 08 eddy makes some funny noises when I'm doing like slow manoeuvring like parking etc. probably the same thing
