Title: Raz Shadow Blue 'Project Retrofit' *Update Page 10*
Post by: RetroRaz on November 02, 2014, 11:49:54 am
Hi All,

Just got another MK5 Golf (4th one) in shadow blue

Previously I have had a Grey 1.9 Sport TDi, Blue 1.9 Sport TDi, Grey 2.0 GTi all in manual. Gone for a DSG this time.

Only got one pic at the moment.

Its only got 64 on the clock with a full VW history and has quite a few optional extras including:

Auto dimming rear view and side mirrors
Folding wing mirrors
Cooled glove box and under arm rest compartment
Under seat drawers
Auto lights
Footwell Lights
Puddle Lights

Plans so far:
Highline Cluster - (Booked with Eddie-NL for Tuesday)
DSG service - (Booked for Friday)
Heated GTI Seats
Multi Function R32 Steering Wheel
RNS-510
Bluetooth
Reverse Camera
Door warning lights
Interior lights LED change
R32 Style rear valance
GTI Front bumper

Cant think of anything else lol.

I may do some DIY videos as well for the above retrofits and upload to the mods section.

Hope you all enjoy the progress thread.

Sounds like a nice spec and you got it in the best colour, look forward to seeing how you get on  :happy2:

I'm currently doing a mini project retrofit on my Mk6 TDI. I had a MK5 GTI before and got quite a nice result on that modernising the interior with updated switches etc, so would recommend those for yours too:

Cheers bud. Yeah those chrome tip switches need to go on the list too lol.
I would love to have the gti ball gear stick but was reading that it may be hard to do.

UPDATE:

Fitted the GTI Seats today, have an issue with the airbag connectors being different. Need a way to get them to connect or last resort is to make resistor looms. Also still need to connect the heated wire up.

you can change the plugs if you can get the terminals out.
Or cut the wires with plugs of your old looms and solder them on

I was just thinking about this today, however do the colours on the old seat and new seat match up? For eg, should I still match up the green to green,  brown to brown and white to white from the floor to the seat loom?
Title: Re: Project 'Retrofit' Raz TDI DSG Shadow Blue
Post by: th3_f15t on November 09, 2014, 09:55:49 am
I've got a similar problem with airbag warning lights because I swapped seats, and rather than chop up wires for now, I'm going to use these;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321308877872?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I've yet to fit them as I forgot to bring a spanner with me to disconnect my battery before messing about with the air bag system. Be advised, while your air bag light is on your other air bags will not deploy in a crash. Also it's an MOT failure to have the air bag light.

Thanks dude. In my old golf I made a loom and it cleared the light, on this car I would prefer if the seat airbag was actually active. I hope someone can advise if the wires colours on the newer seat match the floor wires.

Your old wiring

White - White
Green - Green
Brown - Brown

new wiring is

White - Black
Green - Blue
Brown - Brown

Lol. They were off my old seats. I just transferred them to the GTI ones.

I followed the guide made by @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) and the seats i took them off from didnt even have the bracket attached to the seat!

It still holds well though by using the 5 screws

I did it to 50nm.

You need to program it according to the options on your car for eg: if you have cruise control, rear wiper, auto transmission etc.

Great video. Will be fitting a MFSW wheel with paddles to my GTi in the next week or so. (Hopefully!)

I notice when you took the airbag off you only disconnected one connector, but reconnected two, is this the upgraded airbag wiring loom? Do you know if there's much extra work involved in changing the slip ring?

Cheers :)

Hi Benny.

Yes the additional black connector is there because its a MFSW airbag loom. . The slip ring is held on by 2 clips at the top on both sides. You undo them and it just pulls off. when putting a new one on, make sure that it goes on the exact same position as you removed it.

Not sure if you need to code anything. Hopefully someone can confirm this.

Only if you have a type 1 slip ring. If you have type 2 you are ok. Type 2 has part number ending in C

UPDATE

Just fitted cruise control today plus the wire. It was pretty straight forward, was just a pain getting the wipers back in the  original position after removing it to install the wire.

Had the Kufatec Heated Seats loom arrive too, spent all day yesterday fitting it in, As my seats were out of a 2007 i had to switch the looms around, which isnt too bad. All wired up but i damaged the wire that goes to the CECM so doesnt work at the moment. Getting a repair wire this week and will try again next weekend. Getting colder now and its harder to work on the car outside. Just to add, the wire loom wasnt colour coded, all the wires were grey, but its not hard to identify what is what.

2 Earth ring terminals
1 thick wire with big connector for live
1 thin wire with small connector for ignition
1 thin  wire which says "pin 1" on it for the CECM,

4 wires going to the heater pane area (2 single cables and then 2 cables going into 1 connector)

Thanks to @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) for his assistance on the wires.

Also some better shots of the car since cleaning it

Just got one small issue,  the highline display now shows "Seat Navigation" Instead of "Volkswagen Navigation" and I cant change tracks from steering wheel no more. Anyone know why this may have happened?  Installed 3810 firmware from my gti website.

Check the RNS-510 long coding. Must have the Seat theme coded there. Or the CAN, maybe.

My Golf came with a CAN like the one you got now. :happy2:

So the mrs had a bit of an accident in the golf. A delivery driver decided to exit a petrol station using the entrance and hit the OSR of the car and decided not to stop! Going through claims now. Car still driveable though

Contacted the petrol station to see if they can provide you with the registration of the van, as they must have it on CCTV. Hopefully the accident too.

Contacted them, The security office saw the CCTV footage and said yes it is his fault. She gave the REG number of the lorry. I also took down her details as a witness. However they told me only police can request the CCTV footage from them, but my claims people said they will get it somehow. Ive reported it to the police as well.

Like the thread so far, just interested in the highline clocks, what's the benefit of them over the midline ones. Is it just a bigger screen or are there more options?

Also what's needed to fit the mfsw? Would be a good addition to mine, looking for some more small touches to make me want to keep hold of the car longer!

Also got wing mirror puddle LED lights too. Cant say I was happy with the quality of them as one of the wires came off, it was really awkward to solder it back onto the board as theres very little space to get the soldering iron in. But its done and working.

UPDATE

i finally wired in the tpms switch.   Followed a guide on here but looks like something was different on my wiring.

Wired like this before and didn't work.

So I took the wires out and color matched them instead and it works!  I also managed to drop 3 of the spring clips down the gearstick area.  So annoying trying to take them out so might just buy new ones instead, hence the switches not sitting properly.

I found the best thing to do is to remove the metal clips from the switches.  If you then put a drop of superglue on the side of the switches where the clips go and then slide the clips back on, it will make it easier in future.  :happy2:

What is needed for the tyre pressure monitoring system? Drives me mad having all the blanks there.

Annoyingly I can't get my aux to work with my mdi kit, need to find a way of getting it going. When I plug it into the loom for it, there isn't anything at the other end

Thanks,

ive got the fogs off ebay, you need the loom and make sure you have a highline cecm. going to buy all the relevant screws from tps this week and fit next weekend

Think it's going to be something I ask someone else to do. Haven't got a clue if mine has a high line cecm and wouldn't even know where to start to wire it all in. Be good to see photos when it's done though!

They've held on strong on one side but the other was peeling a little bit. Ive taken some of the tigerseal off and will reseal it again. Not bad for a first attempt and holding on for 8 months

Update

So got the lowering springs in today!

Not the best of pics but you get the idea. Car needs a wash as i drove 450 miles yesterday in the rain.

Went for the Eibach sportline springs, used the factory shocks and popped some new top mounts in too.

The drop is perfect for my needs as the wife drives it more than me and we have speed bumps all over London.

Drives very well, bit firmer than tbefore, not crashy at all. Well happy with the outcome.

Deffo bro!

It might be a bit different on a gti as im on normal tdi shocks. But you will get the idea of the drop.

Not bad for £100 springs

@scottymon

To be honest i have never had brand new tyres all round, i had 4 different tyres  before so i was getting noises, rubbish braking distance and wheels spinning in the rain when taking off at the lights.

Since then i can feel the car being grippy even in the wet. The springs finish the driving experience nicely especially with less body roll

The yellow bulbs only look yellow when looking straight on, not from an angle.

The yellow tinting film was quite good. It was thick. Just make sure you have a hairdryer at hand as it can be difficult getting the air bubbles out.
