nice of them to take the buttons off

even if you want it for DSG paddle shift it is no good, unless you buy some buttons

It is, but the buttons are missing

So £150 + £70 isn't such a bargain

Can you buy the later type of buttons and retrofit them to this wheel or will it only accept a specific version of buttons?

Any year buttons can be retrofitted but it depends what functionality you want.  I just fitted MY2005 to my 2008 GTI DSG steering wheel.    The MY06-08 style of buttons require the highline display for full functionality.  The buttons on the right of the wheel access the display and I believe you can access music settings from here which will allow you to skip music tracks.  The newer style buttons also support voice control which the 2005 style buttons do not.  If you have the highline display it's best to go for the newer type buttons
