Hi I have just brought my gti. However whilst driving in 3rd gear at around 50mph/60mph I tried to change to 4th but I didnt clutch in properly due to my inexperience :ashamed: I herd a clunk and I think the car went into netural. The rev meter then hit the red line and I quickly shifted back into 3rd. Would I have done any damage and if so what? I am going to get this checked at a garage.

Don't worry about it, it's fine :-)

dont think you have damaged it mate. Just dip your clutch all the way before changing gear,
Oh and Welcome to the Forum :happy2:

I once went from 5th to 2nd, rather 4th in my old corrado at about 70mph coming off a dual carriageway. It was not fine.
-
I think these engines protect themselves from 'buzzing' , should be fine from what I've heard.
-
You've not went into the wrong gear, you've simply mis-shifted.. so you've not taken the revs past the rev limiter :happy2: if you'd done a 3rd>2nd instead of a 3rd>4th, it would be a different story!

TT-RS's don't.

I've heard apparently once it revs too high it'll push itself into neutral to protect it from destroying itself. Still definitely not something I ever want to find out though.

The TTRS gearbox is a piece of sh1t

Done exactly the same plenty of times in my old GTI (it really wasn't liking me slamming it into gear lol!!) so don't worry, nothing bad will come of it.

A member a while ago was bashing up the 1/4. Went from 2nd back into 1st.... i dont think it was a happy TTRS.

Thanks for all your replies you guys are great!!! Thinking about it now I may have shifted into 2nd rather than 4th, however when I looked at the gearbox it was in neutral but it still went into the redline area and now Im scared of driving the car how it should be driven lol :ashamed:

fitting username too :ashamed:

If you physically force it past the rev limiter - like changing from 5th into 1st instead of 3rd you WILL cause some damage, the rev limiter will be useless to the mechanical forces of the drivetrain.
Few Civic Type-R drivers did this

Ok, so when I do go to the garage what should I ask them to check for, if there is any potential damage? However Im still sure I put it into neutral and not 2nd gear, but it still hit into the red line regardless :(
-
If you'd of damaged something you'd of known about it. If it drives like normal then it's just a close call and a lesson learnt in time. :happy2: These gearboxes are pretty strong, they take high levels of tuning and daily punishment so the odd slip up isn't much to worry about.

From reading your original post, you put it in neutral rather than a lower gear. As there wasn't any drive forcing the engine beyond the limiter you have got away lightly - basically the limiter saved the engine :happy2:
Don't bother taking it to a garage unless you notice something wrong in normal driving

As above these gearboxes can take a beating and if yours sounds and feels fine then don't worry, might be worth changing your gearbox oil though since its good to do anyway.
