Title: Cheap OEM spec brand new S3 Intercooler!
Post by: DaveyCupra on November 16, 2009, 08:47:41 am
Hi guys, I found this OEM spec S3 intercooler on ebay, do you think this is a good price, I know there is no need to get one just yet as winter is upon us, but it would maybe make a worthwhile investment for the summer months.

I was under the impression the Audi Dealer's charged much more for them? Do you have a link to somewhere I can get a genuine Audi one for around the same dosh mate?

Also I think that pic is for an example image only, the cooler is all aluminium like the OEM audi part as far as I am aware.

that looks like a good mod, is it a straight fit and do you need to use different hoses, or even those from the S3 ?

Reading the US forums, it would appear that the "new" S3 IC does indeed have plastic ends with a slightly different part number to it's all aluminium brother.

....

I'd go for the TSH (THS?) rather than any with plastic ends.

Is there any specific reason why a cooler with plastic ends is suddenly no good. You have had 3 years trouble free motoring with yours  in your GTI.  :chicken:

The idea off fitting the S3 cooler is for better cooling, unless the plastic ends are causing a problem then i would not be letting it put me off.  :happy2:

they are fine for standard... but if you want to increase boost and power  then what would you rather have holding the pressure in? plastic or metal  :happy2:

There are tons of members on here who have had 330 BHP through the plastic ended IC on there ED 30, and i have not seen one report of them coming off.

everyone seems to be just saying ooh plastic ends must be crap. You could have the same argument with nearly all the upgrades on your car. Is it not the same as your point on the intake. the results are just the same (there or there abouts )but the intake you use is only  £150   :rolleye:

I am not trying to stir debate by the way i just dont see the logic in what is being said.  :happy2:

Its not only the platic ends its more so because it has a greater volume  and better core..

my car peformed much better with the s3 over OEM seat one..

Yup :) the cooler gets a thumbs up from me, its a cheapish upgrade and worth the money. Cant give any evidence but it seems to hold boost better, assumptions only but my stage one was 315 bhp, i fitted the cooler and intake and made 347 bhp ( revo boost +1 also)

....I think your point is very valid, TC. I've in fact had over 4 years trouble-free with oem plastic ends. I'm probably succumbing to the comments of other peeps on various car forums which claim that alu ends are 'better'. This in turn has probably been started by some nasty marketing people trying to steal an advantage over their competitors.

In the really long term (150k miles) I don't know which material would fare better.  :happy2:
