Title: Used Big Brake Kit
Post by: dazza on November 27, 2014, 05:26:16 pm
Sold the oz futuras today. So looking for something else to waste my money on.

I'm looking at piecing together a big brake kit with used parts etc. RS4

I missed out on a used set of RS4 front calipers yesterday which sold for £475. These were in good condition and i doubt they would have needed a refurb.

If the calipers do need a refurb how much does this cost? And where to get it done?

Disc options?
Will the audi wave discs fit?

I've just done the discs and pads but want to be on the look out for a bargain.

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,87310.0.html - Hopefully this'll answer all your questions/spend all your money. I think a 4 piston caliper refurbishment is about £250 from www.brakecaliperrefurbs.co.uk .

Thanks mate.
Would 8 pots be better? Or any reason why i should choose 4 pots?
I'm

Ok the rears.
4 pots and R8 Hand Brake calipers? Possible?

For the RS4 calipers you need;
RS5 discs
Centering rings
RS4/ R8 calipers and pads
TTRS/RS4 hoses

8 pots would be much better with a Master cylinder upgrade but without one you do t get the full benefit. I chose to go for 4pots and expensive pads which are plenty of stopping power for a golf (unless your running HUGE BHP/ carry around 2000kg's of bricks all the time).

4 pot rears are possible but I've hears they're £2k + and more for show than anything I think since the brake balance is nearly all front.

Thanks mate 4 pots will be good enough for me. The 8 pots did not seem that expensive so i though why not upgrade.

Having said that i need a new DIY so master cylinder could be it.

With the rears i saw a group bye for the brackets (mk6) on vortex thought i could have pieced everything together a lot cheaper than 2k. Plus there was r8 4 pot and HB caliper on ebay was going to make a low bid.

If you can sort your MC then the 8 pots would be amazing, although the calipers are fairly cheap the discs and pads are expensive. Discs £500+ Pads £100 (pagid basics) - £400 (aggressive such as pagid RS4-2).

I've never looked too much into the rears although I saw a handbrake + bracket setup (still needed main caliper/ discs/ hoses and pads) sell for £500 or so a while back, would look amazing though

If i could afford a 2k one hit on brakes i would have bought an R. But i can buy it piece by piece and next year have awesome brakes.

Will an r8 4 pot fit on the rear? If so i will have a cheeky bid or two. Who could make the brackets as i doubt the ones on vortex would work with the R8 main caliper.

Pretty sure Alex said to me that you need alloy rear hubs to fit the second handbrake caliper with 4 pot calipers. .
IMO 8 pots are over kill. I have alex's TTRS/db9 set up and i couldn't imagine needing more to be honest unless you were hardcore track usage.

You're probably best off speaking to DaveB or Alex at AKS to get some definite answers on the rear setup and to get some brackets  :happy2:

4 pots it is then. I must resist the 8 pots.
