Hi all, My DSG box has started whining in 1st gear. It can be heard when driving in automatic but seems to disappear as soon as it knocks in to second and any other gear but I don't know if that because car/road noise takes over. If I push it over into tiptronic I can hear it in 1st when I slowly apply power. Has anybody had or heard of this before? It sounds to me like a worn bearing noise but the car has only done 59K!
Just to clarify it is not a wheel bearing or CV as if I knock it into neutral while driving in 1st the noise instantly stops.
Just thought I'd see what you guys thought before I book it in and have my pants pulled down! :sad1:
Cheers

Mine whires a bit in first gear too.... done it for ages and not got any worse so Im guessing its just a "feature" :signLOL:

How loud is your whir? Mine is quite a greaty whiring sound, the only way I can describe it is like a bearing is well on its way out. I've taken a few people out in it and they have all said they can hear it but only because I point it out to them. I have found a specialist who can remove the gearbox, strip it, find the problem, replace it and re-fit for £650.00.
I am going to see if I can catch the sound on my phone and I will upload it but I dont think I will have much luck (the only downside to a downpipe!)
Thanks for your reply

Also, did yours start whirring or has it always whirred?
-
I think its always done it
-
Have you been in other cars that do it? do they all do it? I don't know whether mine has always done it and one day I heard it and its pecked my head or whether its started doing it! Ive been driving around with the radio off worrying!
-
I've noticed the same on mine just lately...Maybe it is a feature?

Hmmm, Does your just do it in 1st gear also Dave? I don't know what to think really :/ Could do with meeting someone who also has a GTI DSG and comparing I think.
-
I've just noticed these last few days, but could have been there ask along (only had the car a month or so). Doesn't sound broken, but there is a whine in 1st.
Where abouts are you? There may be a meet or a member nearby?

Hebden bridge, work in Burnley. I don't know anyone around me with a DSG GTI though, Ill just hope someone nearby reads this!

I have the same noise in mine in 1st gear. I always think its a bit like the noise the london underground makes as they pull away from a station
-
Mine is quiet but I have the diesel GT if that makes any difference
-
Right, Ive bitten the bullet and booked the car in at the specialist. This is bit of a blow really as I haven't had the car very long :sad1:
The gearbox will be coming out, stripped down, the problem (hopefully) will be resolved and gearbox will be refitted. From what the guy told me it sounds like a bearing has worn or there is damage to a gear which is an uncommon problem. They have quoted me £650.00 for everything in including 3 days labour and a free courtesy car, which I think is very reasonable.
He told me that not many people like taking these gearbox's apart due to their complexity but assured me that they have a lot of experience with this kind of box
If all goes well and the problem is solved I will post up a review of their service and hopefully this will help other members if they have a similar problem.

Mines whines a bit in 1st and 2nd notice it when you let off the gas and coast in traffic ect wasn't like it when I bought it but I'm not worried about it tbh but urs mibby sound worse :signLOL:

Good evening all,
Picked my car up today from Automatic Transmissions who are based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. They assured me that they knew what they were doing when it came to double-clutch gearboxes so I trusted them and handed over my car on Saturday morning and they supplied me with a courtesy car at £6.00 a day .
They started the work on Monday morning.
This involved;
- Removal of the gear box
- Stripping of the gear box
- Finding the worn bearing
- Replacing the bearing
- Rebuilding of the gear box
- Refitting the gear box
- Testing
They rang me today at 11:00am telling me they had finished the car and it was ready to pick up! Pleasantly surprised at their speed and efficiency as I was expecting to pick it up on Thursday!
I am really impressed with the service I received from them and I would recommend them to anybody who is having problems with their DSG box. They really know what they are talking about and I think their prices are very reasonable for the work that was carried out (£650.00 all in for labour, parts and oil). They also offer a 2 year guarantee on all work that is carried out.
Here is a link to their website, I hope this helps others with DSG problems! - http://www.autogearbox.co.uk/
Now, on to the 'uncommon problem' :fighting:
Here are some pictures of the bearing that came out of gear box and it is fair to say it is sh*gged! It is the bearing from 'clutch 1'.

This is a part of the bearing that isn't damaged, as you can see the inner race is nice and smooth as it should be.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Frr112%2Ftrials_samuk%2FIMG_5058.jpg&hash=e5dc3666539fd09e9a8cf6b8ef3d8000f63ff7b6)
Now here is the damaged part, as you can see the inner race is heavily pitted and worn away. I have marked with red lines how long the pitting is on the race as not all of it is visible.
Here are some more pictures of the damage showing each part of it that the balls would otherwise be obstructing.

The bearing is obviously a defect. The gearbox has only done 58,000 miles which in the scheme of things for a bearing of this size is not a lot at all. Its as if there is a defect on the hardened surface on the inner race in the area shown, normally on a heavily worn bearing the pitting would be visible all the way round the races and an the ball bearings also.
I didn't take the car to the dealer as I knew they would just charge me a fortune for the work and probably tell me that I needed a new gear box and I am happy I took it to Automatic Transmissions.
However I am inclined to write a letter to VW showing them the pictures of this bearing and see what response I get, I will probably get nowhere but at least ill have a bit of satisfaction!
Cheers

Thank you for that educational update.
What I would like to know is:-
Was the oil changed within the time / mileage range before you owned the vehicle?
When it was stripped what was the filter like for contamination and did they check the drained oil with a magnet.
Have they given you a call back date to rechange the oil and filter before the normal 4years or 40K.

Hi there,
The car has full VW service history and the DSG had its full service at 40k, also it is clear that this bearing has not worn from lack of service by the way that it has worn.
I didn't get chance to speak to Andrew as he had gone out when I arrived to pick up the car but I will give him a ring tomorrow and answer these questions.
cheers

So I got in touch with Andrew and he took me through the procedure they did with my gearbox and I can answer your questions!
As I said before the DSG has been serviced correctly/on schedule and at the main dealer.
The filter did not look abnormally contaminated and neither did the oil (forgot to ask about the magnet)
The DSG was reset using a software called 'Autologic' which I am unfamiliar with but he said he reset the perameters and update the software to the latest version.
The clutches K1 and K2 were adapted and re calibrated
All other shafts and bearings within the gearbox were checked for wear or damage.
He assured me that they are thorough with their work and have a lot of experience with these boxes so I am happy.
The box feel great now though, noticeably smoother throughout all the gears and obviously no odd noises!

Well £650 well spent how much would that have been in a main Dealer. They don't repair gearboxes just replace. At that mileage you would not have thought bearings are failing like that, poor oil grade, quality, How many more DSG boxes have this problem ????
-
What was VW Response to this it will make interesting reading keep us posted thanks

I know thats exactly why I didn't go to the dealer, I haven't written to VW yet but I plan on doing I just haven't got round to it. Like I say I have spoken to a couple of experienced engineers and shown them the bearing and they have agreed with me that it seems to be the hardening of the inner race that is at fault. I don't know enough about bearing and batches of them to know if this could be a fault on several bearings but hopefully its just the one so no one else has to pay this!
-
Hello there VW will be able to trace these bearings back to a source, batch, and date, when fitted to gearboxes and build dates for cars as well they will tell you no they can't, ever part has a part no and tracking no as well to do with quality control etc Harding and breaking up of the bearing race is when they over heat etc or been run dry of oil, the bearing surface has not been heat treated right from new so they will be lots more out there of the same batch good luck with VW

Did you ever write to VW mate? I have same colour car as you but manual, live in Bacup... my problem is with the missus DSG on her A£ so researching stuff n found this! :) Would like to know what they said! I have VCDS and have done a clutch adaption to no avail, also an oil change.. its defo on its way to heaven! not same issue as you I dont think but would love to know how VW reacted! lol
