@rtechniki (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1870) was saying that @Jussa (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2225) 's S3 was held back by the old intercooler. This Peron cooler made a huge difference to the overall figures.

Looks like we have a new favourite intercooler

I bought jussa's Ths intercooler from him. Think they had his car for testing the peron. Ths is good cooler aswell.

I think these are about £400?

Would like to know the benefits over the THS/Airtec/Darkside coolers for £180 on Ebay....

£615 retail.  The £180 quid eBay coolers are not THS (£610), airtec (£600 ish)  or the Darkside ones (£can't remember).

The eBay ones have very poor cores and end tanks. They don't actually cool very well due to the core plates being completely hollow with no internal fins.

The S3 we did the tests on is running a Loba 4xx turbo. With the THS cooler the most it would make was 413 bhp and around 390 lbft.  Switching to the Peron and the restriction was removed. Power is now 445 bhp and 430 lbft.

Safe to say the Peron does the job.

Group buy coming soon...

Not putting a downer on it but i very much doubt there will be many gains to be had coming from the ths on a stock turbo anyway

I will be fitting mine next week so we shall see exactly what gains there are over the THS in terms of intake temps and butt dyno.

If you have the best hardware available then you will always get the best gains.

The weight saving is a bonus too.

Anyway all jokes aside, speaking to Alex the Peron seems a very good bit of kit.
but my question is more to do with the value of it over an equivalent 200-350 intercooler... Darksides intercooler seems to be identicle to the THS one that is usually drooled over , but it costs £300 + vat / £270+vat with a COOLER10 discount.

Question is for what most of us use a cooler for worth double the money... for a stage 1 / 2 TFSI... :chicken: :chicken:
to me and my stupid diesel, i argue no. so i got the darkside one.. if i was going HUGE turbo with a TFSI...definitely... if i was just going stage 2 / 2+... hmm....  :popcornsoda:

Post by: rich83 on February 09, 2015, 06:02:19 pm
Spoke to Alex today about the peron. I would side with you on that one Jay. Yes the peron might be more efficient and cause less boost drop across the core... but at stage 1-2+, do you really  need it unless you are chasing numbers?

If I ever get around to it ill get the darkside one or S3 metal tank one.

It makes sense if ur upgrading from stock if your going to spend that kind of £££ but from ths to peron it ain't going to be worth it

I still run s3 with twintercooler and it works well with loads of hard pulls with my turbo setup

How can you test an intercooler properly though
You can test inlet vs outlet temps but what about pressure loss or airflow restrictions / flow rate

How can you test an intercooler properly though
You can test inlet vs outlet temps but what about pressure loss or airflow restrictions / flow rate

Easy... get someone to map it.... If it makes good figures then its a good IC, if not and it gets held back that its not.

Too many variables tto dictate whether thats any good.

I did very good power with my stock old intercooler and stock pipework on my old 1.9 tdi...

Needs to be a scientific test...lab set up tbh. Or something like mighty car mods. Set airflow and distance and heat.

Well we know the mods and what it should make. If it flows well at stage 2+ And keeps temps in check then that will be enough info for me and 90% of TFSI owners.

I disagree.

The whole point of doing "tests" is that you can assess and then provide information based on evidence rather than gesticulation and guesswork. My friends car with stock intercooler and a slipping clutch made 335bhp at rtech as stage 2 cupra r

If someone else does 331 with same car and spec but with an s3 intercooler or a peron or a ths or whatever then thats to say a stock cooler is better?

Only way to test is to do it properly.

Rich's pointless test  :signLOL:

I got my car back from Darkside, as I was away on holiday all week I can't be bothered to do a big update but the long and short of it - my car did 194.2 on darksides dyno when it had DPF delete and remap.
after fitting the Darkside Intercooler before they fitted the 2260 they did another run and it did EXACTLY the same power - however it held the power longer at the top end, from 3800-5k it was about 5-6bhp up on the previous .

With the DsD cooler I'm now finding that my cruising intake temps are as low as 0.5 degrees BELOW ambient (I monitor on my polar) and recovery rates are greatly improved on the stock cooler..drops from 22-23 to 6 or 7 very quickly. Heatsoak also seems much much less of an issue, I have seen intake temps up to 45 degrees with my old cooler after parking up for a few minutes -  the highest I've seen since the cooler went on in similar ambient conditions and pre-shutdown conditions is 22...

I had planned to do inlet temp logging before/after intercooler but I just never had the time and couldn't be bothered to be honest  :signLOL:
When I do my write up I will post up pictures of the specific dyno graph relating to before/after intercooler.

Actually the only way to measure the improvement is to do pre and post fitment dyno logging so you remove as many variables as possible from the equation.

Same car, same map, same atmospheric conditions.
