Noticed on about a 70 mile journey last week that my exhaust note changed from what it originally sounded like.
The exhaust sounds like it blowing slightly, it isn't overly loud, just a little bit raspier. Anyway, took it down to my local exhaust place and the guy said all was ok with no holes, he let me see the exhaust system with the car up on the ramp. Again no holes etc. He covered the exhaust backbox tips to show me no holes were present.
He said it sounded like the something internal in the backbox had gone but not too worry about it, and that it wouldn't fail an MOT or anything like that.
Sounds like everything is ok after this but the noise is just annoying me. Anyone else had this? Or could it be something else?

What exhaust are you running? Stock or after market?
-
The system is stock, thanks

Is it normal for the gti to sound like it's got a blowing exhaust when you first start it up from stone cold? Mine does but then sounds normal after like 30 secs.
-
Thanks for the reply Chris92. This is now all the time for me unfortunately. :sad1:

How old is the exhaust? If it is original and has done a lot of short journeys the baffles could have rusted through.
If its not blowing, then nothing to worry about except an odd noise!
Though of course the boxes/pipes will be on their way out too........
-
Sounds like the baffles in rear box possibly coming away!
A cheap fix/option could be to buy a good condition low mileage used box/system either off here or ebay
-
Thanks for the replies guys, baffles sounds about right.
I'm now at the point where I will leave it until it actually starts blowing, then it's either keep standard or get a Milltek. :popcornsoda:

Sorry for digging up an old post. Just wanted to update on this incase other people ever have this issue.
It turned out to be a rear wheel bearing making the noise. The noise was like a drone kind of a sound, also pretty close to what an exhaust sounds like when its starting to blow.
Anyway, wheel bearing fitted, and now back to normal, exhaust note noise only, thank god!
