Just lately the boot has started sticking, on most occasions it opens up about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the way up on its own steam before stopping and having to be manually pushed up the rest of the way. Every now and again it opens as it should, fully and automatically with no issue.
Is there anything i can do to fix it or is it terminal and a garage job?

Mine does the same. I need to replace the struts.

Mine's starting to slow down when opening. It's no longer as powerful as it once was.

A failing strut (or sticky hinge in need of oiling) will appear worse at this time of year, since the gas struts aren't as effective in cold weather.
The boot pop kit on my last mk5 never worked properly in winter..

As said by John, the cold weather causes the oil on the inside to become more viscous and cause sticking.
A new set would only set you back maybe 20 so it's worth doing.
The boot pop mod won't work during these colder months either (usually).

I bought some new ones for a previous car, from a company I found online, . Half the price of OEM and worked just as well. I had a bootlip spoiler and they pressurised the units to take this extra weight into account.
Sorry, I can't find the details, but a Google around should find some.
Easy to fit.

I just bought some cheap ones off the bay. Worked wonders. Just one of them was better than the previous old pair... http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=351223896510
