Title: Which GPS antenna for RNS 510
Post by: RetroRaz on December 13, 2014, 11:12:54 pm
Hi Everyone.

Ive had a problem on a few RNS 510 units. one was a B version LCD, one was a C version LCD and the last a version C LED.

The problem is that everytime I start the unit the car GPS takes extremely ages to find a sattelite. SOmetimes many hours. I have moved the GPS antenna to many places, changed firmwares, tried v10, v11 and v12 maps. same issue so last thing to look at is the antenna.

Ive got 2 GPS antenna's. Both are these ones:

Can someone reccommend me one that they have bought that actually works?

Thanks

Raz

I gave up with those pucks and fitted a roof mount shark-fin,no more problems, especially in London!
I got a deal on one off Ed but I've seen them suggesting a one on EBay from a earlier thread on a similar problem.

If you go the Shark-fin route this is worth a read

How does the shark fin fit on the roof?my car doesn't have an aerial at the moment.

On another note, one of my gps antennas picked up 10/12 satellites when I stuck the puck outside the car and around 3 when on top of the rns. I might see if I can mount it somewhere inside the interior light area and magnetic stick it to the inside of the roof.

To install a shark-fin it's normally a change over but your year requires a hole to be drilled it's easy but with all jobs requires access to the tools and care!

This is the model I would look at

With service cables like this depending on what you requirments are for your system to function

Cheers buddy!  I relocated my antenna behind  my clusters.  Been ok since then but if it goes mad again then I will get a sharkfin aeriel.
