Title: Shell Helix Ultra- 5w-40 Fully Synthetic- can we use this?
Post by: Homer on December 14, 2014, 12:44:56 pm
So my dad took the car out- oil light came on and he filled it with the above oil... Is this engine oil okay to use or should I opt for an oil change? The GTI does have a thirst for engine oil and I usually have to top up regularly. I was thinking to leave it until it needs more oil and then top up using my normal oil. What's the thoughts on the forum? Thanks

It depends what's in there ATM, that oil is fine as long as what's in there now is also 5w40 fully synthetic.

This can differ, as mine is Stage 1 and doesn't ask for too much oil. The 5w-40 is thicker and is recommended when having a remap done. I recommend using this as It makes a better difference from the 5w-30. You should be fine!

I use Shell Helix 5w-40 as it's more tolerant to higher engine temperatures, normally associated with re-mapped/tuned engines. In an ideal world, you should never mix oils, but as long at you keep the first bit (5w) the same you shouldn't have any issues.

Advice: Do a good oil service next time it's due, make sure you let it drain as much as possible and clean all the filter housing thoroughly. :happy2:

The oils can be mixed without issue, although I would be worried if the oil pressure warning came on whilst driving the car. Either you have a pump/pickup problem or you've let the car get indcredibly low on oil

Stick with a good quality 5w40 oil and you'll be alright. Checking the level once a week or once every couple of weeks doesn't take long :happy2:
