Hi folks,
I've decided to take a punt on a ebay 3" decat downpipe after reading that rtech recommend using them. It seems a slightly better design than some with the small flexi also as this seems to be around 6" on the photos.
My question is can I put it on the car without any adverse effects for a while before I take my car for the stage 2 tuning? I know it will throw up the eml light on the dash but that doesn't bother me as it will be mapped out.
Thanks in advance for the help. :happy2:
-
As you said, the EML will come on but thats it.
Have had mine on for a couple of months with no issues at all :happy2:
-
Sweet have you noticed much difference since putting it on?
Cheers.
-
Just curious as I'm thinking of doing this myself.. Does the EML light not cause you to go into limp mode when planting your foot down or am i thinking of something else?
Cheers,
Carl.

Nope, just brightens up your dash

Louder and certainly feels its giving more when booting it.

I already have a 3" non res catback and revo CAI hope it's not too loud though. Could always have a resonator box put in I guess, ill let you know what it's like Carl.
I read that a common problem with the eBay downpipes with the small flexi pipes putting strain on the welds leading them to crack. The one I have bought has a much bigger flexi than most ebay cheap ones, comes with heat wrap and an option of 3" bore or the downsized pipe to mate upto a standard system. Delivered for £135. I'll let you know what quality and fit is like!
-
Surely just fitting a decat without mapping to suit will result in massive fueling issues and probably produce less power than a standard car :jumping:
-
I thought there may be issues myself that's why I have asked, not getting it mapped till about February and was wondering if I should put it on or not too
-
I would personally wait until ready for map mate as wont be any quicker and mpg will be terible too :happy2:
-
I'm looking to get a new DP .. I had my car mapped 2 months ago.
Would I need to get it mapped again?
-
Yeah it would need to be mapped to get the best from the downpipe would be alot less than the initial price you paid tho as they would only need to tweek it
-
Make sure you do the mods in here to protect the flexi pipe:

This is why flexi pipes fail, too much engine movement :sad1:

adsgti, do you have a link of the one your going to get?

Yes mate its http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/161490555267?nav=SEARCH
Seems pretty decent. Should arrive today I think.

What difference in gains will I see between having a decat or just a 200 cell sports cat? Debating buying a 200 cell magna flow sports cat and getting it welded in??

what a difference...a little bit louder..but the sound..whhooop then dsg pop!...the spool up is so much quicker and the power comes in so much earlier

I have a brand new decat down pipe with heat wrap etc... If anyone wants it. Selling my car and never fitted it. £120 posted!

So...
I've been researching a pre cat delete, which made me look up these..
I take it the pre cat is in here, so one of these would eliminate the pre cat?
Or both cats?

on the standard Downpipe, there is the precat then the cat.
On a 3inch downpipe, there is just 1 sports cat. or you could go for a decat = No cats

So would a sports cat still need the engine light sorted? I know a de cat will need that sorting.
-
I think a sports cat may need the engine light mapping out as the lambda sensor would record a higher flow rate than standard. Tuners can map this out for as little as 50quid or it can be removed when getting a remap anyway

After having a nightmare of the garage gutting the main cat and precat On the OEM downpipe when I specifically asked precat it failed the mot shortly after. So I sourced a dp and and ran it for a while with just the precat mod.
This weekend I finally got my eBay downpipe fitted. It was £130 delivered from the states. Apparently made from the same steel as Milteks. It came in 2 pieces and the mechanic had to do a bit of jigging about to get them together but all good.
The car is an edition 30 and had been remapped shortly before my ownership by some mobile mapping company, i found the receipt in the glovebox. No other mods.
I honestly can't believe the difference this dp has made. Feels like it's been remapped again huge pull from 3k. Sounds a lot beefier aswell also can hear the turbo spooling quite prominontly On boost.
Very happy today and can highly recommend a downpipe over a precat mod wish I'd of just done it in the first place. Strangely no cel light yet so wondering weather the cheap map had some eml removal in it. Just hope the longevity of it is the same as the more exepensive equivalent time will tell ...

Got a link to the downpipe?

Have you got Ebay link for the pipe you've fitted?

No
Didn't you have to pay import duty & VAT?
No it's free. States it in the delivery section on the listing.
-
To be honest I couldn't read much of the listing as it's a complete mess...... using firefox, don't know if that makes a difference!

Did you notice a decrease in mpg? I understand that it will decrease a bit but some people are saying it decreased by almost 10mpg :stupid:
-
Funnily enough, yeah when I boot it it drops quite a bit on the mfd, also takes a while to get up to a decent figure say 30 mpg when driving really steady. This is only going off the mfd would need to do a brim to empty to get a proper reader, but normally the mfd is quite accurate.
I need get it on the rollers, get it tuned properly. Going book in at r-tech at some point.
-
i've had mine almost 2 years now and its still in one piece and passing Mot's (200 cell) :pomppomp:
-
I've had my decat pipe and it passed mot no problem
-
I too am experiencing a drop in mpg of about 10 mpg. Currently driving like Miss Daisy to see if that helps improve things. I read somewhere that it takes a few 100 miles for the ecu to adjust to a decat, not sure if that is correct though.
Car has a stage 1 rtech map, then decat we added 18 months later. Any ideas why the mpg has deteriorated?
Thanks

WTF how did that happen :D

MPG has gone downhill because the car thinks there is an issue with the lambda sensor. I think you may need a map tweek as its expecting the flow rate of the standard downpipe and not the increase flow of a 3inch downpipe.
Just an excuse to go stage 2 now :driver:
