Hello does anyone have any idea about the possible cause of this gunk?

That is usually a sign that the head gasket has gone. When oil and water mix you get a.....that colour sludge.
-
hmmm, would indicate that the head gasket is going - of course it could just be condensation.
Is the car using more water then usual??
-
you can expect a little gunk in this cold weather especially if your driving short journeys due to condensation but that seems loads....
-
Yeah well did think head gasket but I have heard that it can be normal to get some gunk from short journeys

The car is only doing a 10mile round trip a day

I have it as well but not to that level. I'd go with condensation but there does seem a lot...
I'd clean if off and use the car a bit more see if it still occurs

I bought my car last year and then the mayonnaise started. I too thought **** but it didn't/doesn't use any water. This disappeared when the weather warmed up. I do a 64 mile round trip commute so it gets nice and warm and I check my oil weekly and this week there is a sign of mayonnaise appearing again although not as bad as yours. Clean it all out and monitor it but like already mentioned it's ok unless your loosing water.
-
It will be condensation as the car is not heating up to full temperature. Keep an eye on the coolant level etc just incase it is the beginning of hgf. If i were in you're position i'd do an oil service on the car and monitor the results.

my cousin brought a mk4 gti 3 years ago, when we was viewing it i see the same amount of gunk as you got there... i straight away said walk away, it was a good price and it was exactly what my cousin wanted so he chanced it after speaking to his mate and said alot of the gti's do suffer with condesation/gunk build up, it was at 192k and its now at 230k and still going strong, if i was you... clean it up and see how you go... hopefully it be nothing to worry about :happy2:

Thanks for the help guys

There is your likely problem. The best and most enjoyable way to reduce the white goo is to perform an Italian tune up once a week :)
-
Italian Tune up... haha

Nothing to worry about, usually caused by short journeys, or driving like an old woman
