Title: Anyone running 400lbft+ on a DSG box?
Post by: Tejinder on December 23, 2014, 02:33:20 pm
Hi guys,

Dropped my car off to Gaz Jones today for my yesterday to be installed

I'm a bit confused what to do gearbox wise. I'm DSG and will be running between 380 and 400lbft for the time being however next year I will be upgrading to 450bhp or possibly 500bhp.

I've decided to keep the stock clutches for the time being until I up the power.

Now here's my question,

What clutches and software are you guys with 400lbft+ running and how does your DSG handle the power?

Thanks in advance

Tej  :happy2:

@Hurdy (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=53)

I'd tag @rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) but he's only running a puny 350ish. And drives like a girl.

So what's the limit on stock clutch packs?

Limit is around the 450lb mark but obviously some are stronger than others, as with manual clutches

Try talking to @Jussa (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2225) too as he is running around the 450lb mark so can give you some views and advice  :happy2:

Uprated clutch packs are very expensive indeed

You need a DSG remap to increase the clamping pressure on the clutch packs to hold 450lbft

I run 580 ish NM on my standard dsg clutches with dsg stage 1 from Swedish Vtech (mygel on many forums, seat leon AWD 500hp). Don't know what that is in lbft though...

The DSG clutch-packs are holding ok on mine, but I will still be upgrading to Dodson DSG clutch-packs over the winter.
My clutchpacks have taken more hammer than a fairground strongman test and most with 400lbft or more.
Having said that, some DSG boxes are inherently weaker than others even with similar mods and I have even seen slip on other cars without BT conversions.

Personally I would say 450lbft is the absolute limit for stock clutchpacks with DSG software. Above this you will require upgrade clutch-packs, either HPA, Dodson or SSP. SSP are hard to make work, HPA are very expensive with longevity worries and Dodson are as yet an unknown quantity when it comes to longevity as they are new to the market.
