Title: Upgrading RCD300 to RNS310 on 2007 Match - Few questions
Post by: Swampy on January 02, 2015, 04:33:21 pm
Hi All,

I have been doing some research on stereo upgrade options.

I have a 2007 Golf match, with iPod armrest dock, and MFSW/MFD etc.  The iPod integration on this is terrible - cumbersome to navigate, no track names etc.

I've decided upon an RNS310 as a good option for an upgrade, and from what I've read on these forums it doesn't cause battery drain issues so no CAN BUS upgrade is required?

My questions are:
Will i require anything else other than: the stereo (with code) and aerial adapter? (assuming no battery drain issues with the RNS310?) - will it integrate with the MFSW and MFD straight away, or does it require some VCDS tinkering? - i'd like navi instructions on the MFD and track names etc.

Also, is my existing iPod dock compatible with the RNS310 and will it be able to support track names etc.? (unsure if this is a limitation of the dock or the RCD300)
if it will doesn't support track names etc., then I will look to upgrade the armrest to MDI interface as well.

Many thanks

Yes the RNS 310 should work nicely in your car, it will support the MFSW/ MFD and shouldn't cause battery drain issues (I fitted it to my old 55-plate).

It should work straight away. You'll also need the GPS antenna and Maps if you want to use the Sat Nav. I've got away without VCDS tinkering in the past but its worthwhile doing otherwise you'll get module errors in future when scanning.

The iPod dock is a bit of a grey area. I would say it should work but its unlikely to give track names or support playlists etc. Upgrading to MDI at the same time might be a better option, or switch over to using SD cards for music.

That's brilliant  :happy2: thanks for confirming that! Of course, I forgot about the GPS antenna and maps - I think I will try witht he GPS antenna hidden in the dash when it comes to installing it.

I think i'll switch to SD card for music. I'll probably forget about the MDI install as the RNS comes with a front AUX anyway and the SD card implementation on the RNS310 looks far superior to my current iPod dock.

Do you know what it is that needs to be changed in VCDS? is it to let the car know there is a different head unit in place?

thanks

You need to activate Navigation in the CAN Installation List and to deactivate BAP protocol in the Long coding of the Radio/Navigation. That's the minimum of coding you'll need to do.

As per above, however depending what car it came out of the RNS 310 may already have BAP deactivated, but OP won't know until he gets the unit connected up!
