Evenin guys.
I have a problem with my car. The rear passenger stone guard has worked its way loose and is now rattling about really loudly and scrapes like mad on the disc when I drive. As you can imagine it bloody loud when driving, so loud in fact that people can hear it from 50yrds away.
I've looked for the part online but I can't find it either.
Does anyone know how it comes off?? I've had a look at it from underneath and it looks like I need to remove the caliper and disc. Is there anything else I've missed???
The car itself is the mk2 Leon Cupra but it's the same as all mk5 golfs I think??

You need to remove Caliper and disc. This will expose the brake shield. Its held on by 3 torx screws.
Once they're removed you will need to cut part of the shield to get it off the hub.
If you do it right, you can refit it as well. Depends what has made it come loose. Maybe the torx bits have rusted away or come out?

Thanks mate. I've no idea why it's actually come off.
I just need to buy a set of multi spline bits to remove the caliper itself now as the tool kit I bought from halfords didn't come with any :(

You need something to cut the shield too, if you need to completely remove it. I used an angle grinder.

Hopefully it's just the bolts that have come loose and they need replaced. That way I don't need to chop things up.

Chances are it's rusted around the bolts
Mine rusted away completely and started rubbing on the disk so I just took both the rear ones off but I didn't have to do any cutting
All I did was remove the caliper and the disk
It's quite common for them to rust
You can do a temporary fix by sandwiching the bolts with washers but it will need to be replaced or removed at some point

1 of my rear stone guards had managed to work itself loose. Anyone have a DIY for removing the caliper and disk for a complete novice?

Quite a timely post as I noticed one of mine was rattling yesterday so had a quick look to see what it was this morning.
Without taking the caliper off it looks like the sheild had rotted through on the top bolt. Managed to bend it slightly so it's no longer rattling, but I'm hoping that a suitable sized washer will do the job.
Was looking to change the rear discs and pads shortly anyway so will sort it when they're off.

To remove it properly I think the hub has to come off. The work around is to cut it to allow it to be manipulated around the hub, after removing the torx screws.

Mine went last week, mate cut the back plate off with tin snips.
Easier than taking caliper off. :smiley:

Ended up doing that after I removed the caliper. The disc wouldn't come off past the carrier, so I just abandoned it and got the hack saw out!
I had a look online there and replacements are about £25!!

Actually yes he did take caliper off!

I had this issue on my GTI.
Bolt that held it in place had rusted away so it would wobble.

Hi All,
Resurrecting this thread to say that I got my rear guard off by cutting it in half using a hack saw and a bare hacksaw blade (to get greater depth).
Mine was broken at all three fixings so I made a cut towards one of the fixing holes and at the 11 O'clock position when facing the hub.
Hopefully this will be of use - they sure do make a racket!

Wait until the discs/pads need replacing, buy a couple of hub bolts, take the hubs off and fit new shields & brakes as a job lot :happy2:
I would retain the shields as they keep harmful brake dust away from the dampers and bushings.
You will need a big ol' breaker bar to achieve the 180 degree final torque though.

It's an utter swine with regular 1/2" sockets and breaker bars, but swings round easy peasy like butter with the proper VW 3/4" socket and 1M breaker bar :happy2:

Finally got around to doing them yesterday.
Not the most pleasant of jobs :grin:
