Had my front end smoothed off and put my plate in the window.. Took about 7 months but iv finally been pulled over and given a pink slip, didn't argue at the time as I was unsure of MOT rules were different to the actual law.. Been reading about this recently and all I can find on the legislation is -
Fixing of front registration plates: vehicles registered on or after the relevant date6.—(1) This regulation applies to vehicles, other than works trucks, road rollers andagricultural machines, first registered on or after the relevant date.(2) Exceptasprovidedinparagraph(5),aregistrationplatemustbefixedonthefrontofthe vehicle in the manner required by paragraph (3).(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed—(a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable,(b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (4).(4) The diagonal length of the relevant area is—(a) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is at least 57 millimetres, 22 metres,(b) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is 50 millimetres, 21.5 metres,(c)in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is 44millimetres,18metres.
Does this mean the window is not an issue?

(a)in front of the vehicle in the case of a plate fixed on the front of the vehicle.
As the windscreen is not the front of the vehicle then arguably I would say that the ticket was issued fairly particularly as the vehicle has been purposely modified to exclude the use of a number plate.
That's just my opinion off course.

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,12447.0.html - do this mod, saves a lot of trouble but retains that clean look when parked up. I put my plate in the window when off public roads.

Its fairly easy .... The number plates on a vehicle must be at the front and at the rear and clearly readable . The Windscreen is nowhere near the front on a car , on some coaches and buses it can be at the front as the windscreen is directly above the front bumper .... In this case its clearly in the wrong position . This will be cracked down alot more from October2014 onwards due to the fact that Tax dissc no longer exist and people can be prosecuted with just ANPR camera evidence of a car being on a road where the tax has not been paid , this will only be picked up if the Registration marks are correctly displayed

Doesn't the front plate in front of the front wheels?
I'm sure I read that somewhere

You'd do well to get the wheels infront of the front wouldn't you :P

Haha that's what happens when I watch football at the same time
I meant the plate has to be in front of the front wheels therefore in the window is illegal

Got a shortened sticker plate, reflective, has the right font and letter size/spacing
If I put this on the outter of the window in the lower near side position will this cause more problem or will that be 'fixed' close enough to vertical on a plate that is visible in daylight.. Loads of ways to look at it, temped to go into the station and see a copper for his opinion :)

I was a Copper .... It has to be put on the front of the car and the rear , it is obvious where these areas are for every car . The fronts of Alfa Romeos are difficult cars to attach a number plate to the front , it is put on the side , its looks odd . The dealers would mount the plate differently if they could - they can't . The law says on the front , not half way back , on the windscreen , 14" back from the bumper or anything specific , its just the front , which is obvious on 99.9% of cars

The Law

That was a handy link, as my rear number plate decided to fall off the other night so now I'll have to tape it on when I drive to AKS as I don't fancy shoving it in the window which will just invite trouble from the law.

^^^^ all I'll say is watch your removable number plate like a hawk where @vRSAlex (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1981) is concerned! That bloke will have the skin of your rice pudding!
