Title: Aux-in for rcd510
Post by: K9 on January 12, 2015, 03:38:37 pm
did a search but didn't find a how-to so the question is that i had a rcd300 installed and now retrofitted a oem rcd510 so now i ordered this item  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Switch-Plug-AUX-Cable-For-VW-Volkswagen-GOLF-JETTA-Sagitar-RCD510-300-Cuddly-/201162109859  will this be just plug-n-play at the backside? i know i cant use cd changer with this but i really dont use the changer at all.. so how will i install it when i get it home?

Been looking for one of these! I got one a few months ago but was for a rcd 300 unit, and my Rcd 510 didn't have the same adaptor so it's just sat in my toolbox now.

Similar to this one.

It was plug and play. had to go into the setup menu on the rns510 and select Activate AUX input. whatever you play from your phone/ipod plays through the speakers. Cant select songs on the screen. You would need bluetooth/a2dp streaming for that

it's dead easy! the one i bought was like this :
1. remove the headunit ( follow a guide if you don't know )
2. un-plug the quadlock connector
3. there should be 2 empty spots
4. your aux connector only fits in one of them so just push it in there and it clicks
5. re-connect the quadlock to your headunit
6. guide your aux wire to your center dash part where TPS and traction controll button is and connect the aux-in new button in a empty spot.
7. re-install the radio and all the other dash parts
and your done

took me like 20min top to do this easy mod.

Its just step 6 I need guidance with. I'm not sure what bits I'll need to take apart to get in there.

Ahhh I had lots of fun retro fitting an aux to my MFD2 (yes I know not an RCD510 but food for thought)

I did buy one of these adaptors to plug straight into the back but it didnt work first time around.

Turns out, that dependant of model/varient (to be honest many different things) inc various settings within the head unit itself.
The quadlock connector at the back didnt make the blindest bit of difference, was more of less just a hole

I ended up cutting the quadlock connector off, looking at the wiring diagram at the back of the head unit to locate where L IN, R IN and GND was situated, added the 3x cables from the quad block to pre-existing slots on the loom (no cutting involved)

Pressed Aux, tested = Job done !

I did however buy a headphone pre-amp for £25 off fleebay as the audio output form external sources was a bit low

I can send some pics if you run into trouble, as I took them along the way just in case :driver:

P.s This took a lot of research and phone calls to realise this, should have just looked at the wiring diagram in the first place

Just wandering, do you need to remove the mdi kit to fit one of these, or can it be used side by side?

THAT is a very good question and is one i'm unable to answer @Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345) might be able to shed some light :)

On my RNS, you can go into Setup>Media and there are three settings for 'Aux-in level' - High seems to match the radio volume when my phone is set to half-volume  :happy2:

The MDI kit connects using a different socket altogether, whereas the 3.5mm jack Aux-in socket uses a portion of the quadlock plug. So yes, they can be used side-by-side

Just been looking at the ebay item, on there it states rcd510 and rcd300, I don't understand why it would therefore work with the 310. When I receive mine, I'll try it with the 310 first if not, hopefully it will work with my rcd510. I'll post back if it woks or not!
Title: Re: Aux-in for rcd510
Post by: usmangti on February 18, 2015, 08:15:15 pm
So received the aux in today. Nice quality looks very OEM.
This is where it gets weird. I have a rcd310 and rcd510. I have being using the 310 as the 510s cd changer is knackered. Ideally I wanted to fit the aux to the 510 just cause it looks better, and then won't need CDs anyway. The aux works on the 310 but not the 510. Both stereos have aux activated. Apart from some distortion on the 510 when adjusting volume there is no sound being sent through. The head unit allows me to select AUX so it's defo picking up the connection.
I'm stumped as it's advertised for the rcd510 and the old version rcd300. As @Cossie Killer (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11234)  was having problems with his 310 I thought it might be a different lead for each.
@vw55raz (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6494) any ideas?

Bloody weird, the noise distortion is exactly what i was getting.

Guy on eBay was very good actually, told him i was having issues and he's given a full refund. Could it be a coding issue? Something to do with the mdi combo loom?
Title: Re: Aux-in for rcd510
Post by: usmangti on February 18, 2015, 08:27:21 pm
Tell me about it.

This cable is utilising the cd changer slot and I believe the old style 30 pin iPod Dock uses the same slot. The mdi loom seems to uses what looks another quad lock connector. It did show MDI initialising for a few seconds when I first connected it to the 310 but not the 510.

Have you sent urs back? My pal wants one if ur flogging it. He's got an rns510. It goes tight in the dash so don't fancy chancing getting mine out now.

Regarding coding, surely in my car if it's Worked with one and not the other then it must be a compatibility issue with the stereo itself??

What stereo mate? And did you have to do anything else additional or plug n play.
Title: Re: Aux-in for rcd510

I may try to see if its a coding issue first

Actually I don't remember fitting it without the MDI loom, will try that if i get time. If it dont work, will give up and remove. The guy gave me a refund so your pal can cover the postage and have it foc.

Yeah defo have a play with it. But tbh I don't have an mdi loom anyway so not sure what difference that would make whether it was there or not.

Title: Re: Aux-in for rcd510

It didn't. I'm assuming it will need coding in, but if the mdi kit works shouldn't it work?

Also would I be able to splice into the wires to fit it, or is it not advisable?

Well its deffo something to do with the MDI loom!... The aux port works fine when the looms not connected.
