I was driving my gf's mk5 golf the other day and noticed her stereo is terrible. The quality of the sound coming from the speakers was just mono and crap. I played around with the settings and it didn't get much better.
My GTI sounds amazing in comparison.
Would there have been an option for an upgraded sound system or a 10 speaker pack with the GTI off the line?

Yes, is the simple answer.
Do you run an after market stereo in your own Golf? My girlfriend has a Pioneer stereo with stock 10-speaker system and it sounds better than my Kenwood with JBL rears (hooked up to an amplifier) and stock speakers in the front.

my GTI had 10 speakers from factory.
most of the pre 07 ones had 10 and the post 07 ones had 8 but quality remained the same.
don't forget the settings on the HU may be very different...can make a huge difference.

Mine is an RNS MFD2 and hers is the basic stereo that comes as stock.
My car is an 05 and hers is an 08
So I guess it's a combination of the 10 speakers and the better system then?
You say the earlier models came with 10 speakers, that wasn't an optional extra no?

Think so, my 1.9 TDI SE had them as did my GTI,
I only said most, not that they all had them.

Your GTI may have the additional amplifier under the passenger seat.. makes a big difference to the quality of sound from the OEM setup :happy2:

I don't think so, I installed under seat drawers and did not see anything out of the ordinary unless it's hidden?

It it helps, i dont have the 10 speaker option / sound pac option with the the stock MFD2. After upgrading to RNS510 (Version C), the sound quality improved a fair bit.

Same, running the standard MFD2 and my system sounds flat compared to my misses symphony audi system in her A3. I know its the headunit but I am looking at the RNS510 so reading your comment, I'm glad to hear it does improve the sound.

Speaker in my A3 that I had for a few weeks was much better than the Golf.
Had a seperate stand alone factory sub in the boot. Door speakers were in better position.

I took these out today.
Hopefully the replacements will sound a little better.
