Title: Car in for Milltek and other things ;)
Post by: Phil Mcavity on December 15, 2008, 11:01:26 am
We seem to be having abit of a gathering next tuesday at jkm portsmouth, Cars  on the ramps for Rolling roads will be Redrobins GTi, WHITEGTI's GTi, and now Cocopops ed30, and mine to have its Miltek fitted whilst theirs are on the rollers.
Should be a busy morning.

Anyone thats local and wanna pop in and say hi, we shall be there from 10am to around 12 noon.

What was once just a quick rolling road for me has turned into a little meet!

I shall try to be there by about 10:45, so that I can see Robin's car on the rollers, and then prepare for mine to go on there for 11:30!

Would love to make it there earlier, but have a friend that is travelling from Bristol earlier that morning as he wants to come with me! So have to wait for him

So what is on the cards mate, motor wise? Did you ever find out how much more the insurance was going to be with a remap?
Title: Re: Car in for Milltek and other things ;)
Post by: Phil Mcavity on December 16, 2008, 05:30:40 pm
My insurance was exactly £15 a year more if i went with Greenlight, but i stayed with swiftcover because im not remapping and couldnt see the point to change companys when both prices were the pretty much the same.Swiftcover will cover my exhaust because its not in their eyes improving the bhp that the Manufactures state. Only if i added a downpipe it would invalidate my policy with swiftcover. My year policy total is or was £470 (all payed for) £485 if i had remap declared with greenlight. Each extra mod would be charged at an extra £25 admin fee.

I've had a std exhaust in the S3 pal, so should fit if broken down into its component parts, just take lots of padding, cardboard etc to pack it in and stop it rubbing against your nice trim

This is becoming a bad habit   Sorry I couldn't make it but I travelled from Hook (south of Reading) to Durham via Newark last night to drop my wife's Lupo GTI off and pick up a pristine Mk2 16v GTI (73k on the clock).  Drove the Mk2 back from Durham to Ipswich and arrived at 2am... would have had to get out of the house at 7am to get to Portsmouth for 10am and then had to be back to Ipswich by 2pm because the baby had a BCG vaccination appointment (which I didn't know about until yesterday  :surprised:) .  Basically it would have been Mission Impossible.  Was really looking forward to coming down and meeting up.  I'll now be at JKM tomorrow to pick up my exhaust and arbs.   :ashamed: :ashamed: :ashamed:

yes, spot on joe, the wife wont be able to tell the difference,i phoned her and said id had it done and i got an enthusiastic reply just like she'd had a wisdom tooth out!........... get the idea

anyway milly is on along with yes im sorry joe another mod, could resist but ive had a green Cotton air filter supplied to have fitted, which stu (vRSTu) was a star and fitted it for after our little sprint back to his house afterwards.
Well, absolutley love it, sounds the buzziness, both air and exhaust makes her feel alot more crisp and responsive, MPG has increased with both additions, but ive only done a few miles but so far so good.
Your in trouble now joe come santa pod if you still have the black beauty by then.

We were looked after as always by kate and the gang at JKM.

Full english down the cafe down the road in which Robin, myself and Stu went and had a feast.

Rolling road results were interesting, lee (Cocopops) is i expect on the blower to superchips right now complaining on his missing horsepower.
Chris (WHITEGTI) was sort of pleased with his but underead aswell as Redrobins

Robins hit 236.4bhp
chris (WHITEGTI) 245bhp
Lee (COCOPOPS) 270bhp

but although they were lower then what all had hoped all were more pleased with the smooth torque curves which didnt disapoint.

All in all a fun morning out .............. oh yeah and me with my new present

Yep, I'm downloading a new map as I type...

Don't get me wrong, the 270bhp and a very flat torque curve is nice... but when someone says you can have 300... you want 300!  :signLOL:

Will get the new map uploaded and then I'll have to arrange for another trip to JKM to get it tested for what it should be!

also phil.... did you not have a RR before and after? would be interesting to see if a cat back made a difference to torque or bhp, usually when i put a cat back on it feels quicker! but i think its the sound that makes it "feel" quicker

im sure ive made no more the about 4-5bhp and about a 10 Lb ft increase on torque, i will re run her on the rollers in january, but i expect no more then 240bhp being realistic. JKM said 1bhp for the filter and a few for the Zorst.

Sounds absolutley lovelly, soo smooth and a great deep burble, i will be doing a quick drive by video on a country road and the wife's gonna snap me driving past blipping the throttle so you can hear the difference for those who wanna hear the difference the milltek non res is like.

i gave chase today with vRStu down the 27 today, and kept up quite well ,although i had to hang on in a long sweeping left hander holding on for grime dealth whilst Stu was smirking .Seriously ,if your thinking of getting a milltek, get the Non Res as its in no way anymore noisey in the cabin then on the stock pipes. They dont stick out as far and fit the tunnel spot on.The Green cotton air filter goes as a great addition giving the car better drive outa the hole feeling .For £34 , i couldnt refuse.

....I'm not gutted at all. My Revo settings are turned down to less than they used to be - There is a healthy spread of torque and the curves are smooth and as they should be. The car is very driveable and has no problem getting its power down on the road - Why should I feel gutted? - Because the bhp number isn't as high as some people think it should be?

The crack was in the wastegate and not in the turbo....The ECU was compensating for the leak by increasing its demands on the boost (requests in the %90's) but this would not have been good in the longer term. So, my car was still delivering power with the boost leak present.

My boost requests are now in the %70's and so there is loads of headroom and very little stress. Everything else in the data logs is healthy - That's why I use JKM's dyno - As a diagnostic tool and health check.

fair enough robin, but id have thought a stage 2 gti woud be more than 236bhp? mines run 251 with map and CAI and forge DV, just a bit confussed?!

Its a dyno lottery joe, yours if it was put on jkm would only get 230approx, chris's (WHITEGTI)yesturday is stage 2 revo, full apr and was 245bhp. So yours at 251bhp on JKM rollers is a no chance in hell getting that figure. Robins again is higher state of tune then just stage 1 and a dump valve. An intercooler is not gonna give you any power increase joe as you have that and robin doesnt and nor does Chris (from memory)

All the cars need to be on the SAME set of rollers on the same day to then have a better idea.
Both cars we all thought are spot on, torque curves are all smooth, so i dont think anything wrong why they didnt get over 250.

well chris's getting 245? you just confirmed, running stg 2 and apr, so the only difference is robin is running a milltek and pleanty of other mods, and still 236. oh and i think youl find that a bigger cooler will add noticable power.

I'm not sure you're right there Joe.  An intercooler stops power loss due to heat soak.  It doesn nothing to ADD extra power.

As for JKM's RR, I was surprised when I had my Edition 30 put on the dyno as it only showed 224bhp as standard, especially given that other Edition 30's regularly get 240+bhp on other dynos.  I put it down to my engine still being tight as 95% of the mileage on it is motorway miles.  However, I think Keith also doesn't massage the figures and settings to produce the power figures while some other garages might.  After Revo Stage 1 I got 278bhp on the dyno - Revo claim 305 bhp - and this seemed poor in comparision to other figures that people mention on this and other forums.  Its only with Stage 2 and a host of mods - see my sig - that I finally got 320bhp.  But the thing with the dyno at JKM is that it is the best type of dyno you can get and is operated by someone who doesn't like to manipulate bhp figures, so I know I can rely on the readings I get at JKM.

lol!!!!

Helllllooooooo!

Robin and I are running the same boost setting, but with slightly different timing and fuel figures.

I am running Boost - 6, Timing - 5, Fuel, 8.

I expected more than 245.3hp, but I'm not too fussed I guess! I had predicted around the low 250's. But who knows....maybe on a colder, less humid day I would have got 251! Curves look nice, I'll post a photo of them later. Hitting around 291ft/lb of torque which is ok.

To confirm: I do not have an intercooler. Merely Stg2 Revo, TBE APR and Carbonio.

Echoing what Steve said for a fair comparison all cars must run together under the same conditions/rollers for it to be fair, which is obviously much easier said than done!!!

Keith at JKM said that if I was to put a full intake system on there such as the Forge/Evoms, then I could expect a 7-8hp gain immediately! But then, I have to think about the fuelling issues from the stock fuel pump not being able to cope with the increased demand on fuel. Vicious circle isnt it!!!

As Robin has said, running Boost 6 is ensuring that the turbo is still running at around 70% headroom, which is good to know.

Keith said that originally he ran my car at Boost 7, and it felt a lot quicker than at boost 6, but then he saw that the fuel pressure was falling when the car was loaded, therefore potentially leading to fuel cuts/misfire - which isn't what I want!

I agree with Joe, in that the intercooler will probably make a small difference in overall hp.

Good to see you folks again, apologies that I had to shoot off, had quite a busy day.

Agree with illyan, robins car has been turned down because running it on the old settings, he damaged a turbo, so it was lowered to give a better operating tolerance.

An intercooler cannot give Higher horsepower joe, a larger intercooler just allows better heat dispersion as the engine and turbo will run hotter because it receiving more fuel/air mix, so all it does is help the engine temperature to run at its correct running temperature with any other adverse effect ie cracking turbo's etc as an example(in robins case). It has no affect on improving horsepower. If you add a full exhaust joe, then yes your car will produce towards your figure that youve been given.Golfgirls car produced 260bhp as stock on a set of rollers , then went on a dyno dynamics and got stock bhp 227bhp.
Its just the accuracy of the rollers that give these differences and nether robins or chris's cars are not sick!.

Like ive said before, we need everyone on a SAME set of rollers to proove this once and for all.

Why won't mr T_T come back and help us out!

I've noticed that he has recently been on other VAG forums!

Maybe he doesn't like us anymore!

, i dont think he agree's with some peoples opinions on the GTi forums. If his word isnt final, then all hell breaks loose, and is not good for forum morale. He has upset a number of people with his sometime stern wordings on some subjects.

Tis a shame as he has in no doubt alot of knowledge.

T_T certainly has a wealth of knowledge and contributes a lot to any VAG forum. However - His word is not gospel and he isn't right about everything he posts (and neither am I or any of us - we can only post info which is to the best of our knowledge). The issue I sometimes (not always!) have with T_T is that he sometimes slags off a company - Superchips and JKM being two examples. I tend to slag off Regal and we are all entitled to our opinions, but as Hurdy has often said: Listen to everybody and make up your own mind.

No-one is trying to claim that JKM's dyno is the one and only set of rollers in the UK which is truthful or operated properly, but I know that I can trust JKM and I view a dyno as primarily a diagnostic tool.

Thanks for the compliment, Chris  - It was just a quick pic I grabbed and I didn't stay around in that position because I may have got in Keith's way.

Of course, it's having AP Racing brakes which makes that pic

Not at all.  It just that its easy for a tuner to get a higher peak bhp reading at the expense of say, a decent consistant curve.

True, speaking to Keith at JKM, I asked about the Ed30 engine and the S3 engine and as far as he is concerned, they share the same engine parts according to the ETKA part numbers... so he thinks that the Ed30 engine indeed is the same as the S3 one with a few minor differences.  This is in agreement with what Superchips say and articles in VW Driver. TT however thinks they don't and that the Ed30 engine is the same as the GTI engine, but for once I really wasn't convinced by his reasoning.  Or maybe thats because I have an Ed30
