Title: Possible to retrofit amp?
Post by: GTIEagles on January 19, 2015, 03:16:08 pm
Hi, I have been reading up on the different audio setups that were avaliable for the MK5 and the general consensus appears to be:

Early MK5 GTI - 10 speakers (6 front, 4 rear)
Later MK5 GTI - 8 speakers (4 front, 4 rear)

But I have also read about the VW soundpack which I assume is 10 upgraded speakers all round and an amp?

I have also seen a speaker upgrade kit for the front or rear.

My car is an early MK5 GTI so I have the ten speaker setup. Does anyone know if it's possible to retrofit the soundpack amp to this setup? I guess if I did I would/should upgrade the speakers too?

The 10 speaker setup in mine is pants to be honest!

Not an easy option as all the speakers were fed individually from the amp under the seat, which means 3 pairs of cables through each front door, where as you have 1 pair of cables into your doors then a cross over for 10 speakers or a capacitor in series with the tweeter for the 8 speakers.

lots of extra wiring for no reason, your better off just buying a normal amp and wiring that in, far less to do.

Thanks mate, I was hoping it might be a plug and play job but it barely seems worth the effort if it requires what you describe. I have heard that upgrading to the current vw headunits would provide a better sound so I might go down that route instead.

You  would be better putting a amp in separate and splitter cables onto the oem header unit or change it

I know of a guy that retrofitted the amp and speakers to an Octavia. The in-progress pics were not a pretty sight as he basically gutted the interior to fit the looms.
