Title: Electrical question - led down lights.
Post by: s3dubbin on January 21, 2015, 11:17:21 am
Any electricians on here that could help me out? I have had six 5w led down lights installed in my bathroom yesterday. The electrician has told me fire protection is not needed for the loft insulation? Is there a threat of a fire from 5w led and do I need protection?

Thanks, Stevie.

Not 100% sure what 17th regs say but

in my opinion if the lights are capable of having other normal bulbs in that do get hot it should have fire protection

if the 5W leds you have are the only type of bulb that can fit in then no as they will hardly get warm let alone hot

Thanks for that. Appreciate it. Not sure about different bulbs not led fitting. I asked him before and he said yes they are protected. I ask him today and he says they produce no heat. Also the lights are connected with connecting strips and tape is this a half arsed job, do I need any safety there, joining boxes?

Cheers, Stevie.

There is nothing wrong with terminal block if all done correctly. Again the only issue with terminal block is if installed next to a hot bulb, led's will not get hot.

plus even the light manufacturer uses terminal block usually to connect into, if you wanted proper junction boxes on all the lights the cost probably would have gone up.
