Rear dust shield on my mk5 is rattling. Is this a fairly quick Job to remove and what sort of price will a garage be likely to charge.. going to have to resort to national tyres or kwik fit

Think you have to take the hub off to do them, if I remember right. Best to cut the new shields and slide them on, then bolt them on

I wouldn't let kwikfit change a light bulb :scared:

I changed mine myself was a pretty easy job
You need to remove the rear caliper and disk then there are 3 bolts holding the shield on
Think it took me around 10/15 mins a side

They are more hassle then they are worth. Had to stop on a busy A road a week or so ago to dislodge a stone that got stuck :fighting:

Sounds easy enough. Can the caliper and disc be removed with a basic tool kit?

Personally I would stay well away from Kwikfit. A Kwik Google of "Kwikfit Scams" will give plenty reason to avoid.
I was there yesterday and they charged a young girl over £400 to replace brake pads. Another woman was going to be £240 for 2 continental tyres for her Corsa. The guy was doing her a favour by reducing it to £184.
Avoid at all cost.
Find a mechanic on Google using the reviews.

I agree they are more trouble than they are worth. Had a rear one ripped off when i hit some tyre debris coming back from Germany. Rattled like a goodun until I removed it. I needed to take the hub off to remove it completely but you might be lucky and be able to cut it off. Front one came off coming back from another trip to Germany (I drive to Germany 6 or 7 times a year)but i managed to pull that one off through the wheel. Did that while on the train under the channel :grin: Both were rusted and i haven't bothered to replace them. Garage said don't bother. I think i read somewhere that the Audi A3 rear shields fit and they have a cut out on them so they are easier to replace if you want to.

Replaced mine not too long ago. As stated to do it properly you have to remove the rear hubs, I didn't and just cut off the part that prevents you sliding them on. The metal is really thin and easy to cut through with tin snips or a dremel. You do have to unbolt the calipers and carriers and remove the discs though. To remove the calipers carriers you'll need a stubby 14 xzn multi spline bit and probably a breaker bar to remove the bolts as they can be on very tight. Other than that it's quite an easy job. :happy2:

My rears are starting to rust but still solid Fronts disintegrated 2 years ago, replaced last week as I was a bit concerned the brake lines and Porsche/Golf sensor cable was a bit close to the disc.
New shields were keyed and coated with underseal (normfest) easy fit with new M6x10mm screws

I'm just about to tackle the back sheilds. Does anyone recall what the heads are on the 3 securing bolts? Also are they likey to need replaced?

The bolts are torx probably T25 or T30, mine bolts were ok.

Likely the torx will shear - If your in the rust zone you may need to use heat, vice grips, dremel to cut a slot, impact driver to get them out.
They are an M5 thread, stainless hex heads with thread lock make good replacements.

One of mine is lose but new. I think the garage forgot to fasten it on. What's needed to just fasten it in place? It's already over the hub etc, just needs bolting.

To replace the rear shields is a beefy process:
Calipers off (easy)
Caliper carriers off (an utter ball ache)
Discs off (easy)
Hubs off (You need a massive breaker bar and high quality triple square socket for this job, otherwise, utter ball ache)
The hub bolts are one time use, so budget for replacements.
I would only tackle this job when the rear pads/discs need replacing as it's not a 5 minute thing by any means.
You can apparently fit new shields without removing the hubs if you trim a section of them away with tin snips....but that's just a bodge.
A lot of people are tempted to bin them off, but I would advise keeping them. They protect the bushes and dampers from the heat and nasty brake dust, not to mention all the road detritus that can flick up into the brakes and wedge in there, causing more unnecessary damage.

I'm gonna assume the garage will take responsibility. Checking this week to see if there's actually any bolts or if mine is broken. If it's just missing bolts then they definitely didn't put it back as there's no way I'd have been able to get it into that state :confused:

I would get new bolts... one of mine (always the bloody last one) the torx rounded off so I had to piss about with a hammer and center punch to spin the bolt out.

Cheers, rotating the wheels today so will see what's happened.

So had a chance to look at this today. It would seem they're just corroded through where the bolts fit. Only way I can see to reuse is washers on either side so the bolts will hold it. That said k can't see how you can remove the screws without removing the discs anyway? There's little room between the disc and where the bolts attach.
As I'm utterly skint I may ask then to remove it until later in summer depends on cost.

My mechanic mate cut my one off with tin snips when it rotted through.

I took mine off and never replaced them they just don’t last

If you want a longer lasting shields, there are aftermarket ones made out of galvanised steel, only the edge is exposed steel, fitment is very good too.

replaced mine a while ago with Hajus ebay specials Double coated in stone chip paint before fitting
Didnt have any trouble removing the carriers using a breaker bar

Thanks all, I'll get them to cut it off ass I don't have any snips, then get a new one sorted before winter :happy2:
