Is that the normal fit for them?
-
They look quite strange - doesn't look like normal fit to me. Are they genuine VW parts?
A pic of mine for comparison;

Looking at the pic again - what model is your car? The GTI foglamps are different to some of the other models - that might account for the gap.

What are the benefits of open fogs? Better cooling?

What are the benefits of open fogs? Better cooling?
yes better cooling and style.

Style...subjective. Cooling...no. Not without the hot climate radiator that was fitted behind the left hand fog light (Mexico specifically I think). Other than that they let lots of s**te in. :signLOL:
-
Open fog grilles = no extra cooling unless you have a true drop down CAI...then open grilles allow more air...

...but reduce weight and resistance, and that equals 10+ HP :drinking:
The air entering through open grilles passes through at the bottom left and right of our engines.
-
So could direct the air to the intercooler?
-
You could direct the air to anywhere if one felt compelled. Some time ago I added duct work to my brakes by cutting through the inner wheel liner. But after repairs were made after running into that ditch a few years ago, I left the replacement liners whole. Directing air to the FMIC would be nearly impossible due to the reverse of air flow direction that would have to be done.
