Can't decide whether to do my chain and tensioner as a preventative measure. Not noisy but cars new to me and done 90k.

I personally wouldn't bother unless it's making a noise. They 'should' last the life of the engine.

Do they usually make noise before they give up or is it sudden failure ?. Thanks for reply

My bmw 123d coupe started making a metalicy rattley noise before I got bmw to collect and repair. Turned out the chain was the issue and tbh you cnt miss it! The n47 engine in bmws were prone to failure tho! Only had 40k on clock!

What symptoms would you get?
Typically on hill starts or when in too high a gear when clutching out? Sounds like squeeling and skipping metal?

we had one in a couple years ago at work that snapped, seemed to make a right mess

My pals has been rattling for almost a year now and he's just booked it in after the engine management light came on (fault code was timing-related).. he's been quoted £850 for chain and tensioner replacement, timing belt, water pump and a full service..

Luckily I caught mine before it snapped and destroyed the engine so it go repaired under warranty... My friend on other hand wasn't so lucky... Snapped on motorway and had lose of power and everything including brakes! Cost him a few thousand to get new engine in! Bmw will usually meet some costs but not all! On start up its really loud! And can hear the chain moving! My Mini Cooper s jcw also had the dread timing chain hence why coming to vw and never looked back tbh!

No good these chains, why not stick to belt around both cams ??

I don't recall hearing the 1.8T engine suffering from Chain problems...

The TFSI engine uses VVT (Variable valve timing) and the chain is part of this system. A belt over both cams wouldn't allow this

You could just save your money & if it ever goes bang (which is probably not likely in most cases) you could fit an S3 CDL engine or an Edition 30 engine for a few more quid than the cost to do all that work on the original engine. Well that's what I would do anyway!
