Title: Pirelli & Scirocco the end of an era

undecided at moment given the economic climate, plan was to sell it when i can order a r20t, have spoken to APS about some KW springs which they have put on a car i have seen which reduce that gap in the arches

£300 inc VAT fitted from APS, they have done a couple which does not affect the ACC, its not quite as agressive as the H&R drop either

i think its horses for courses between the two, the extra power on the GTI comes into play on the motorway and you can make rapid progress without too much attention, the scirocco comes into its own on A & B roads but does get you noticed, fortuantely i now have managed to get the DRLs turned off so less obvious

my missus loves the gti (the extra punch does show on fast A road and motorway driving having finally gone head to head) so i never get a look in these days and she needs the more practical motor, i'm hoping a remap on the roc will tempt her out of it for a while, both have done around 4,000 miles and as they are both standard you begin to notice the slight differences in handling and ride, i reckon the mk vi gti with acc and the diff will be a cracker
Title: Re: black & blue
Post by: wigit on February 20, 2009, 01:51:51 am
finally got round to addresseing a few issues with the scirocco today

first off a trip to APS for some KW springs which have given it a 20mm drop and had the desired effect in terms of reducing the arch gap and ride quality, standard dampers remain so ACC still works all be it a bit firmer, car remains spped hump friendy so no scrapes, a few pics of before and after

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FDSC00769.jpg&hash=2e8c0f6e7e30d2f19787a65e910daf52ece168d0)

the road from brackley to buckingham gave the springs a great work out on my way to superchips hq to have the remap put on, many thanks to Jamie and his team for showing me the operation, superchips had dyno'd 8 sciroccos all of which have been showing more than the 197bhp, out of the 8 one other has recorded the same figures of mine in standard tune, quite pleased with the end figure

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FSuperchipscopy2.jpg&hash=341e57c4c6622f9f180923ea71050ce0b7ce1296)

noticable difference occurs above 3,000rpm with a linear power delivery in the style of the standard set all be it not had much chance to try it, but looking forward to a trip up to buxton in it this weekend

next up will be a remap for the pirelli

bit of an update on the car front as done nothing since February

been spending more time in the Pirelli and absolutely loving it, nothing done mod wise except a small addition to interior, some minor performance mods are planned

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Fstonor_park%2FDSC01005.jpg&hash=1d3ad3a93a1639375d19364d8fa1208b0ccf5cd0)

Pirelli logo added inside (so jealouse of you Ed30 guys), donated to me from Crazy Quiffs as they are for the centre caps for the original Pirelli P slots on the mk1 so a nice link back :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Fstonor_park%2FDSC01014.jpg&hash=b82640dd55c52ba49267a2dec2d7ca65622f9e43)

scirocco has been a bit out of sorts (mainly as having so much fun in the GTI) and was looking at selling it, however, have changed my mind and been doing a few pits and pieces

had been planning some vinyl for ages and based on SteveP and Greenouse's recommendations booked the car in with Alex at Chameleon in Daventry, initial plan was to have a few bits done in gloss vinyl (so i can easily turn the car back to stock), however, i didn't like it and thought the CF vinyl suited the roc, however, this meant more vinyl to get rid of the gloss detailing on the car, however, meant the car has a more unique look than cars i've had pass through the rocco forums

bits done were

1) rear diffuser section of rear bumper
2) side sections to rear hatch
3) front grill
4) lower lip to bumper
5) front and rear badges

decided to leave the wing mirrors as a bit obvious on the roccos, really pleased with the results and look of the car as its a bit more muted, some pics as had great weather and gave it a quick clean, also show off new Scirocco Central logo which Roo Signs designed for us

also popped into to Volkwagen Racing for a VWR panel filter and VWR short shift (nice to be the first customer for some road roc bits and the new website worked), we'll see how the filter performs on RR day (car seems more eager) and have to say short shift is a great addition to the car (i'd say an essential mod on the manual rocco), i can't speak highly enough of the service i got from Mark Farmer from VWR and the team and his help on other plans

next priority is the zorst where a couple of avenues are being expored as want something a little different in terms of look  have a coupl of ideas alloy wise i'm contemplating one involving a colour change with the standard 18's and some spaces to widen the stance, want to keep the car looking low key

thanks for reading  :drinking:

Wigit, the Pirelli looks great in the piccies, surprisingly similar to mine

I still have not seen another on the road and probably never will.

You will love the remap, it just makes the thing fly. The pull in 4th, 5th and 6th gears is amazing. The map on mine must limit the power/torgue in 1st and 2nd and a bit in 3rd as you do not notice it as much. Good thing as it puts less strain on the drivetrain

Both very nice Andy. 8)  Not normally a big fan of carbon, but the Roc suits it well, although I'm abit undecided about the badges.

TT a few on here know i was not going CF and then put it against the car, bagdes were a nightmare for Alex compared to GTI, put them on to show the look, having my spares painted up black to compare

i've been in discussions with Revo since october regarding their scirocco map, having decided the Pirelli will go Revo and been privy to more detailed information on the 1.4 map they did for a fellow rocco owner i've been itching

Revo wanted a scirocco for GTI International and a manual car to do some dyno testing which linked in well with me asking who they used given i wanted some idependant figures on mine with Bluefin

yesterday was not the best day for doing dyno runs with intake temps over 50 degrees when we ran Bluefin and stock and around 65 when we ran the Revo, temps were due to the weather with 15 minute cool downs, runs were on Maha rollers

we could not get better than 243bhp out of Bluefin with intake temp of 53 degrees (at rr day 268bhp at 39 degrees), the Revo runs had intake temps of 60 at the end of the day and graphs are below

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2F20TBHP.jpg&hash=d4d3c6aec27c44c963a4a1b8aac1e1b1b4400cae)

having seen the figures, was a no brainer, having driven it back 30 miles to revo hq again no brainer, interestingly we noticed the flash counter was showing 6 on my car (which is spot on) and was the final nail in the coffin

at Revo hq have added a few additions as its on the Revo Stand at GTI International this weekend for the launch

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FDSC01125.jpg&hash=757fb5d35827c7558879e3860b6f551b896eb918)

many thanks for Carl and Kev for organising everything, Nick who developed the map and gave an insight into the the development and capability of the roc's engine whilst we were at the dyno (mk6 GTI is looking good), masterclass in customer service guys, which i'd got it right first time  :happy2:

very nice  :happy2: the new engines from VW certainly do the business..
In terms of your flash count , did you mean the SC incremented the flash counter (as its not supposed to?), just wasnt clear from your writeup  :ashamed:

in reality don't no if bluefin was meant to reflash the ecu count (i'm checking but propably not), issue is flick car back to standard is great but ecu flash was showing six so not product for me

well finally got round to getting the Pirelli Revo'd, only Stage 1 but its a start

whsilt Revo had read code off a Pirelli to check same as Ed30 it was the first to recieve code, a few people may be aware that later K04 cars (S3s and Cupras) have had the odd report of a misfire with code which disappears after 1st service, ours was consitent at 6,500 so Revo borrowed the car for a few days and have tweaked the map and will again after the cars first service, can't fault the service as Revo were upfront regarding the issue after there testing and keen to rework things

got to be said i'm absolutely loving the GTI even more now, especially given its understated, i did some performance benchamrking and pleased with the results, indeed at lower speeds its a lot smoother in day to day use, SWMBO is loving it  :driver:

focus RS was a good test comparison as they are like chalk and cheese and got me thinking what a great package the ED30/Pirelli and is a true all rounder, the Pirelli has reconfirmed its place as the favourite of the two  :happy2:

Love the perilli... im really not keen on the wheels if im honest... they're good.. but not ultra special. I think the pirelli should have some uber looking wheels..

Wasn't too keen on the Pirelli Wheels to start with, but now I love them lol - what on earth was i saying here  :surprised:

They grow on you every day...

2 great motors!!!! :driver:

not done an update on the wigit fleet in ages even though their has been some work in progress:

really pleased with the Revo Stage 1 perfomance with stock filter on RR day  :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2Fdyno0001.jpg&hash=6bb443df00d7b255027efce9608e53ecc8ee45ac)

following a last minute decsion to take the Pirelli to the Scirocco Central meet at Gaydon for a Fiscon handsfree kit, my brief appearances resulted in the Pirelli winning best of the rest and some medai whoring in this weeks Autocar :innocent:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2Fautocar.jpg&hash=6aa7dbe2ab23f2298c352abac51dfdc6ee0b4a17)

have toyed with selling the rocco for a second Pirelli i resisted and so plan was hatched for Revo Stage 2, a few have seen and heard the work in pregress.

car was packed off to Volkswagen Racing for a week for a non res TBE and fast road engine mount (pic care of RR), my ceramic finsihed one should be on the car in a week or so

its the first road rocco to have the mount in and i have to admit since both have been done i've been loving the car

i got in touch with ITG and so yesterday was the intallation of the development intake along with SteveP where the p#ss take was planned :drinking:

thought i'd take a pic of the revised VWR short shift kit (metal arm) which ahs been on 12k now with no issues, indeed even better since the mount

time for a bit of a catch up on the rocco as appears to have been a while so the May and June 2010 (yes shocking its been 12 months) updates were

first up was the production version of the ITG, still on the car and going great guns

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FDSC02414.jpg&hash=7eb07c866543c083e894926e5454b12e5ad29ae4)

next was the ceramic tips to the milltek/vwr tbe (appears i'm the only rocco owner to have gone down this route)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FDSC02419.jpg&hash=75754be8d7da6b5de0385df508d3eee7cf90fe3f)

after 30k the clutch was slipping on the rocco so off to VWR for a clutch which went in a week before Inters last year

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FDSC02382.jpg&hash=39ca06d719b00b7478fb5cc9f0866af77ebc2d47)

VWR TDs turned up in July 2010, running 8x18 on 35 offset (stock rocco rims are 41), made a massive difference to the car in terms of how it drives but a bit marmite

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2FCCTrack.jpg&hash=310130cbf1dc5c29102fe8b91a59eb400d1d4474)

car was still running revo development stage 2 file
Title: Re: Pirelli & Scirocco (rocco updates page 4)
Post by: wigit on May 31, 2011, 09:45:23 pm
revo came up trumps later in the year with the stage 2 file for the tsi, difference was light and day over stage 1 and incarnations of the development file

in november 2010 was invited by Revo to Bruntingthorpe (2 days before the snow) for a test day to get some performance figures and for a feature with US magazine Eurotuner who wanted to drive a rocco

we felt car want 100% (plug change later rectified this) but with 2 up and a full tank of fuel got some respectable times

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Fforums%2F154362_10150351889880118_244475475117_15973288_100223_n.jpg&hash=284aa6b5e7962293e975e218dc712e597cf345b2)

also gave a chance for some nice photos and why i love rising blue:

porsche calipers are under half the weight of the stock items and were to run on Mintex 1144s, the rear GTI set up has larger disks than rocco 286 instead of 256 with stock oem going on rear

these spent a month in the garage waiting to go on, given rising fuel prices it was not making sense to run the rocco for 20k a year (Pirelli has been having a rest whilst swmbo is lady of leisure), didn't want to sell it and go berg derv, so decided to acquire another motor for the fleet to mean the rocco could become a weekender, originally went out for a polo bluemotion but were fetching silly money

instead ordered a Fiat 500 Twin Air Lounge in white with some toys given the deal from fiat meant fule savings paid for the car, currently awaiting delivery of 'Pootle' (in honour of the flumps) and will be sporting P500TLE when it arrives late june

oem tow hook was cut down and re profiled to a wheel brace bolt size so bolt could be mounted to car, TRS strap hole was enlarged slightly

new cover then had a slot machined for the strap, also some black tape applied to inside of bumper so blue was not visible

so bringing things up to day

was debating which coilover route to go down given i wanted to do the odd track day and wanted the car a bit lower, the question was which KW variant, V1 was more road biased, V2 seemed ideal, V3 if properly set up

having been chatting with VWR they said they were doing their own V1 kit with a stiffer set up than the stock V1s more akin to how they set up their V3s, decision made to go down this route and add some ARBs later

wanted to do things properly so a ACC cancellation kit was needed so I could cancel out the damping but alter the steering weight (in reality car has rarely been out of sport)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2Ftfotfn%2Fphotokw.jpg&hash=f7f079e4c1ccab868c382ba26cda91c19ea2c8b2)

VWR have raised their game on late on workmanship, only hiccup was wrong spring rating from KW for the rocco, revised springs fitted last week, with the words 'drop it another 10mm'

so decided to celebrate breaking the 50,000 mile barrier by taking it to Beford Autodrome on Friday, car has been cranked up 10mm front and rear as just too low (there was still 5mm to go on these pics), ride has improved on normal roads and can get over the speed hump by my house

new suspension really made a difference to how the car handles and whislt its a little firmer the damping has meant its no longer crashy like the stock set up :happy2:

well its the end of the roccy road as it needs to make way for its replacement which arrives in the new year and the car will be going back to standard in a few weeks time  :sad1:

latest additions were VWR ARBs and tope and gearbox engine mounts and have to say as a fast road car (always its intention) it was sublime on a trip to france in the summer so a few pics of what it become

i thought after 2 years and 11 months this thread was due an update

my wife sold the Pirelli exactly 6 years to the day she picked it up

what an amazing car and will be missed just for what it was, used as a daily it racked up 85,000 miles, hardly any warranty work and only an upgraded clutch and replacement low pressure fuel pump and so much more of a car than the scirocco

it still felt special and remained fun to drive and i have had a huge grin trying and failing to keep up with the R whilst driving this

it won't be appearing on forums and i do have the first refusal on this to buy it back as we just didn't have the space to keep it, it is being replaced by a second R, this time night blue more door on 18s with dsg and a few bits

i will leave you with the parting shots after Detail My Ride gave it a makeover

Lovely car.

Saw one a while ago in a hospital car park, same colour as yours. It was evidently well used and non-enthusiast owned. Alloys massively curbed and paint shockingly scratched. Still caught my eye though!

Looks like it's done at least half the miles you mention!
Lovely car - I tried one absolutely identical to yours before my ED30. Liked the Pirelli a lot more in person than in pictures, and the rarity factor is pretty cool. Think I have only ever seen one Pirelli on the road.
Just another Golf to everyone else, eh...?!
Do you reckon Pirelli's will keep their value more than any other mk5?
