Title: Reflex Silver TDi Progress
Post by: lewisako on January 28, 2015, 01:15:00 pm
Alright people!!

I am totally new to all of this so this will not be the quickest progress page you'll see at all. But its a means for me to be able to see what gets done slowly.

I welcome any comment or suggestions to a newbie, any tips or advice would be great.

But firstly here she is, totally bog standard. :)

Plans for the car are to:

1) New set of wheels and lower
2) New front and rear lights
3) Front bumper conversion to GTi or GTD

And for now that is it. Unsure on what wheels as of yet, interested in the monza 2s but not sure really where to buy from, bit skeptical buying from ebay.

Looks like a good base to start with and the plans sound good

My brother bought wheels from www.bmautosport.co.uk a couple of times and have always been spot on so if suggest taking a look on there

If you want new headlights I'd suggest getting the projector headlights instead of the black GTI ones there's plenty on eBay

I remember when my car looked like that . Those wheels are cool, only thing I don't like about black wheels is when they get stone chipped/kerbed and silver appears.

Haha had a look at your thread and car looks great! Bit of inspiration for sure! What front bumper do you have on yours and where did you source it?

Wheels look good, im just not a huge fan of black wheels they seem to blend in too much and the design disappears

Search for 3sdm 0.01 and it'll give you a idea of how they look on a golf

Thanks mate. I have a bumper from a GT. Got it from eBay then smoothed the grille, I was lucky to find one in reflex silver for around £300 iirc.

Got round to test fitting the new front bumper today:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FiFlewx%2FGolf%2F02D86B95-E9F2-4028-BB14-80E764F81940.jpg&hash=125e1e6cca9ec778ef80b9db67b613d6a4b6b512)

Took my basically all day to sort this out but glad its out of the way and done now, just needs to be re sprayed and then I can fit it properly. Will eventually get the front fog lights and have them wired in. But i wouldnt have a clue how to do that, so would seek some expert help. But for now thats it.

Took a lot longer than imagined today to change the rear valance. But well worth the effort in my opinion. In talks with Darkside at the moment for an exhaust system and EGR delete so the empty gap of the GTi valance will get filled when their new garage is opened!

•   Remap (Darkside)
•   GTi Side Skirts
•   Coilovers
•   Pressed plates
•   Fog lights
•   R32/ED30 rear lights
•   GTi front lights
•   GTi Break upgrade- unsure on caliper colour (thinking green)

Think that should take me a while to get all in place, happy with how its looking at the moment though!

Picked up a set of ED30 rear lights from a fellow forum member yesterday, good to meet a few people and put faces to names, here they are:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FiFlewx%2FGolf%2F63B793B7-FF25-4426-BB9B-F4DAB8ACEE05.jpg&hash=0780ddeaf5be55d013a8238225a2fb818109cd17)

Half Way though fitting:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FiFlewx%2FGolf%2FD84D956E-316B-4A2E-B337-AE9FADF1121A.jpg&hash=6333fc4da954783c4ff0a3c4c1a9021e65c2e130)

And finished:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FiFlewx%2FGolf%2F8E74FBBB-0A97-427E-AA16-6B97E0834CDD.jpg&hash=4560c5678ca475d231e431e44f22b28aa2999a93)

Think the rear is looking pretty much how I want it too now. Just need to get the exhaust put on, this however can only be done when darkside finish their renovations. Considering pasti dipper the lower part of the rear valance but undecided,

Rear is looking mean, some tints and I think you're set. Maybe a little bit of smoke on the lights to emphasise the rest of the black parts ?

I dig that bumper and black roof. Stance looks so much better with the springs and the wheels suit well IMO. I have a similar LED interior mod and does make all the difference. Find someone with VCDS and you can fiddle with the intensity. I recently got the footwell lights turned up to 100% and they're BRIGHT!
Looking forward to more updates!

Yea I went for ford electric orange. Took a day or so to prep and spray. Didn't need to be to the best of finishes as it's under the bonnet but looks okay in my opinion.

On recommendation of a fellow member, I decided to get my car detailed prior to Tunerfest at Brandhatch on Sunday, Dave from Solo Vehicle Valeting was very thorough. Took great pride in his work, and was a nice bloke to meet! Recommend him to anyone around the Kent/ London area:

Slowly getting to how I want it to look now. ED30 front splitter and sort my empty fog wholes out and ill be pretty satisfied with how to fronts looking! Any comments / suggestions welcome!

Also booked in at AmD mid August for a full Miltek cat back exhaust. They've also got a deal on when purchasing an exhaust system they are remapping for 50% so I could turn that down!

Been on holiday so not many updates recently, but just got back from AmD Tuning in Essex and now have a full new Milltek Exhaust system and had it remapped. Unfortunately they were unable to rolling road it due to an issue with the turbo over boosting higher up the rev range... Any ideas on any fixes would be great. But car definitely feels better to drive now and liking the new sounds of the exhaust!

So what happens when your turbo overboosts? Does the engine go into limp mode?

I'd be more worried to know what's wrong with the turbo since your stage 1 tune should be an old and tested map.

Maybe your geometry needs some cleaning or something. When you have that sorted you can test the new output in a rolling road.

Hi my mechanical knowledge is not that vast tbh and in hind sight I should have asked the mechanic more questions. But he said it would be fine to run the new map but he wasn't happy to rolling road it!

Here are some photos of the paper work he printed off for me incase that helps:

I'm no mechanic but I can only see that you need to replace 2 glowplugs. Your boost pressure seems fine to me, tbh. My GT Sport is doing a bit more boost with a GTB1749V (1,34 bar stable; 1,54 bar peak), but I don't like smoke and it's not doing any smoke like I asked to.

Maybe it's peaking a bit high, but I'm not sure how much the OEM turbo can take and that has nothing to do with your boost at higher RPM.

Haha yea I need glow plugs as well. Fair enough, maybe if I go somewhere else to get it on rollers they may test it then? Ill see how it goes for now then.

Yeah, if you can make a log that would be easier to know if all is well, or at least check your maximum EGT with an bluetooth OBD reader going WOT. Too high EGT will kill your turbo sooner than normal.

Yes mate you sure have, soon to do the brake calipers and when I install front fogs gonna get an orange tint for them. Think it should look good with a few orange bits around the car.

To be fair I wouldn't mind copying a lot of what you've done to your car  :happy2: just had mine re mapped but think I need to start thinking about a new turbo and internals

So got the car on the dyno today and it was making 134WHP. Was pretty happy with that and all was going well...

Until my clucth started slipping on the way back from the Arsenal game last night. So little bit pissed right now :(

AFAIK the dyno gave you the power at the flywheel, not at the wheel like the WHP would suggest. 134 WHP would mean around 160-170 BHP, which the OEM turbo can't handle.

I think AMD should have made a smoother torque delivery to preserve the clutch, with that spike no wonder it's slipping with your OEM disk. If you like the torque, maybe you can think about converting to a single mass flywheel.

Yea the guy who done the dyno said he reckons its running at 160bhp and he said that the mustang dynos are very accurate. I think thats the route I'm going to have to go down man.

Is annoying because AmD said that the car would be able to handle the remap they gave it. I'm all new to all of this so when you hear it from guys in the know you assume they know best. Lesson learnt I spose though... Going to have to be careful with how I drive once its fitted so the turbo doesn't go as well. Want to upgrade it soon anyway but cant afford it just yet. As well as trying to save to move outa my parents aswell!
Title: Re: Reflex Silver TDi Progress
Post by: Shoduchi on August 25, 2015, 02:27:30 pm
The OEM clutch can safely handle the torque at higher RPMs. I think it's safer for the OEM turbo to just handle around 140 BHP. I'm no tuner or mechanic but that's what I've learned so far.

Of course there a lot of factors to take into account: peak boost, max EGT, etc. I wouldn't do much WOT accelerations before doing some logs to make sure it's running safely.

If your engine is a BKC/BXE like I guess, you can think about a Garrett GT1749VB for a reliable 170 BHP. For more you need to replace the injectors or fit bigger nozzles. I went for a Sachs Performance clutch with OEM dual mass flywheel, which is good enough for me and like OEM. AFAIK most people fit a single mass flywheel with a reinforced clutch.

Mine is on 220bhp  on the oem clutch with no slipping.
Yours is the 2.0L (not sure if PD140 or PD170), which has a much stronger clutch that is similar to the 1.9 TDI PD130 clutch, while ours is similar to the 1.9 TDI PD100. I had no idea of that difference before I bought mine...

Your map should be more progressive, I think this AMD map is too harsh on the clutch. It should give a good kick when boosting but both turbo and clutch will suffer from the increased demand.

Progress been a bit slow lately, not had a great deal of money after a holiday and a few months with no overtime, however a few new but small updates. Firstly the clutch is now sorted and not slipping any more so am happy with that. So decided to give the car a clean, Im by no means a detailer but was happy with the outcome!

I had the same at AMD, wouldn't put it on the rolling road due to the turbo over boosting. How much was the exhaust?

Erm not sure what the exact price of the exhaust was but in total I weighed out near 600 for the exhaust and remap if I recall correctly mate. They were doing 50% of all remaps when brought with an exhaust system.

Just went for the -30mm H and R springs if i remember right. Its currently on standard shocks and rides really well. Not harsh at all. I like how its sits at the moment but think I will want to go lower soon, so Im thinking about coil overs. All depends on what you want really.

H&R sports surely then? They will probably settle 5-10mm further as I've heard.
Give me a shout if you do decide to go with coilovers in a hurry :innocent:, I'll be looking for some springs soon!

No problem mate, source it on eBay for 150 i think, original part. My girlfriends dad owns his own spray shop so did it for 200 quid. Thats including smoothed and sprayed front grill as well.

Are the wing mirror covers real carbon fiber? Seen some going on the Facebook group, I've been half tempted. Looking forward to seeing the dipped bits.

The they are just carbon skinned, not real c/f. look decent on I think though, got it off the bloke on the Facebook group. Just need to get the door handles on now, need a day where I'm free to come up and can get it all back in. looking forward to having it all back together as it looks decent in the box at the moment  :happy2:
