Title: Oem + steely
Post by: Washout on January 30, 2015, 02:18:07 pm
Following on from my new members intro.

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,93187.0.html

Soooo this will hopefully become my new build thread to chart the ups and downs of my oem + gti.

As the title may suggest I'm planning on squandering my daughters uni fund to shamelessly modify the gti. Hopefully when she is older I can show her this thread to appease her.

So I went from this;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsl3czwxw5.jpg&hash=65581ecf9db7892cca4084770f49af264f555d32)

2.5 turbo diesel ford ranger. Great off road, but cut the air like a wardrobe and handled like a dog on roller skates. It was good losing the back end so predictable.

To this;

 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg4_zps0wih6trq.jpg&hash=393cb60b1acac80b69012c57e70302e0a78bad12)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpslqirlyah.jpg&hash=8b8c84434a8c27c04be9c24e3534c7cc39cf49f6)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg5_zpso2j8dlim.jpg&hash=25b05c0e91e62ca011dc27da36349cb957ea210a)

2006 steel grey gti. Forgive the filth on it I was busy attending to my newborn daughter. I was looking for a very long time for the right car, steel grey was the colour I always wanted but couldn't get one in the correct spec versus price, eventually I compromised the spec slightly, which is effectively;

Leather heated seats and cruise control  :signLOL: oh and iPod Dock.

I have many plans for the car and intend to use this thread to bounce ideas off you all, I appreciate all of you opinions both negative and positive. I'm a stickler for keeping everything as oem as possible so it probably won't be the most exciting car on here.

I had and now have a larger list with thanks to this forum. Subjectively the following;

Audio upgrade.
Mfsw.
Alloys, not sure about the black. Might get these refurbed and diamond cut (I have a plan to stave off white worm).
Paintwork, machine polished.
I quite fancy new brakes  :wink:
Stance, not sure about this quite like it as it is.

I'm sure this will be edited and grow even more.

Few small areas I have attended to recently;

New polo aerial;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpst3nojirf.jpg&hash=d3086c486cdb530ab26c493a9d9fde29649b141f)

Made of cheese me thinks.  :laugh:

And fitted;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg3_zpswufbadfp.jpg&hash=23c8316ce87bfd2e0802516fa86d3af7847ac214)

Looks a lot better.

My tips needed urgent attention. I would say they have never been cleaned the soot deposits were so thick. Talking of exhausts that reminds me I'd like a new one (power valve) or (miltek).

Anyway back on track filthy, filthy, dirty tips with some weaponry.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpswaun6ttd.jpg&hash=ab623857cb45a908e5eb3550a37f56c516358715)

Halfway through;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg3_zpsshmbi8ar.jpg&hash=710c2158bb4d946cb617719421ab0ee8c27c89c3)

And hey presto 4 hours later of cursing and with fingers worn to the nub, wishing I had never started.  :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpssxpal2ak.jpg&hash=ddbd6aa7a560214cc3c2e2967a8775c2fe5c8ec1)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg5_zpsaz5vlsue.jpg&hash=14bd8e6515127fcfc5c198b575a22f153cd074ed)

Much better.

As the previous owner had decided to remove the rear gti badge and replace with a red I was going to replace it. However I quite liked the contrast against the grey so decided to replace the grill badge.

Unfortunately the replacement was the crappiest, shoddiest pile of excrement ever to grace the annals of ebay. Badge placement was wonky and lettering not oem sizing. The fixing also left a lot to be desired.

A piece of turd masquerading as a gti badge.

 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg8_zpsr4cnfmda.jpg&hash=f2341e5bda4c0b910233eeb6b50fbd0a3c60500f)

Yeh straight in bin.  :signLOL:

That's it for now, thanks for reading if anyone has. Comments welcome cheers guys and gals.

So a small update and further emptying of the wallet.  :signLOL: I'm trying to establish a good baseline for the car before I start spending on the interesting/exciting bits.

This was irritating me;  :sick:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsnismt9so.jpg&hash=4d89361efbc3a2df83cfe9d8f24b63e2682c356e)

Small stone chip level with the steering wheel. So rang the insurance and paid the excess for a new one.  :sad1:

Halfway through. Weird seeing it like this.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpsovjybrg8.jpg&hash=d6ceb8dcd111da2893e8f493afe9c18c94870d1b)

And now mmmmmmmnnnn windscreen fresh.  :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg3_zps33naj7xg.jpg&hash=37071ae8950fef5a8432b9af51df49773398da56)

The chap from auto glass was brill. Friendly and quick.

I picked up this from demon tweeks the other week when buying my lambs wool wash mit, just something I like to do with my vehicles makes me feel better anyway.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpslz7tqreq.jpg&hash=2442a45db81a059c6603078abb426cb78be41cd2)

Lazily I never fitted it.

Further to me establishing a good baseline gti I did a bit of research and decided I would run her over to votex in congleton for a 60000 mile service. The guys there are fantastic I couldn't recommend them enough, got them to pop in the filter as well.

I'd like to say a big thankyou because they were really helpful and sorted me a courtesy car as well. It was however a dsg I'm Soooo happy I bought a manual gti, I think I would have cried a little inside every time I used a gti with dsg  :sad1: . Don't get me wrong it's so smooth and rapid but somehow removed from the whole experience.

Anyway I have a nice little list to work away at as the votex guys found a few issues.

Cv boot on its way
Rear tyres wearing on inner edge (can anyone shed light on this)
Brakes worn to 60% (recommendations for upgraded disc and pad set up)
Console bushes slightly worn (again recommendations for upgrading)

Plans for the next few weeks will be to order a new diverter valve and pcv valve and fit, and run over to pro spray in Warrington to get some prices for paintwork (obvious sorry  :signLOL: )

Thanks for reading

Did you get the rain sensor replaced correctly with your new screen? If not, your auto wipers won't work on intermittent anymore. A new sensor is only a few quid from the dealer. :happy2:

The chap from auto glass had a new one with him and fitted it with the screen.  :happy2: When I rang them up I made sure they were replacing everything and that they new it had auto wipers.

Hey matey, this is the closest pic I have in photobucket. The main body of the exhaust I used wire wool and the finish is bang on. Around the base of the tips the soot/carbon deposits were really thick. I went careful and used jewellers paper to agitate back down to the chrome followed by wire wool and auto sol. Hope this helps.  :happy2:

Righto a small update to keep things up to date. I have been splurging slightly.

Bought these from Mandy on here;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsrcj0wx8h.jpg&hash=5fb709f08fa1c3078fa5112e0820c7ee20c821fd)

And fitted, forgive the crumbs etc I have yet to clean the interior;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpsgjgx7ftm.jpg&hash=635c2ed4e7318e07739790d1e6f022abd34c7e24)

Thankyou Mandy arrived really quickly and are exceptional quality and fit, why vw didn't fit these as standard who knows.

Also purchased and fitted surrounds and pressed plates front and rear, love these;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsv4wlhelo.jpg&hash=124435e9c1afa2ec25840f05c3e8208ee838ed7f)

If you look on the right of the plate you can see some lacquer peel on the bumper, this is partly why the front will be going for a respray soon.

Bought this from creation Motorsport on the bay, in my opinion the quality isn't quite there, this will be for sale soon and I hope to fit the osir version at an eyewateringly expensive price.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg17_zpshderklf2.jpg&hash=e271cdf24890f04fa745b2363d34ba0590ad333c)

Got some new genuine mats, not sure of the price of these from tps, I got mine from vw beadles delivered I think they were slightly cheaper than other places.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpsgf07snzj.jpg&hash=ba8d60cea8eff322a34c9ce92ee3aceed1e25cf7)

No piccies of these fitted as I left mud all over the inside of my car yesterday.

Been collecting bits in perpetration for my alloy recon, I've decided to go down the diamond cut route with black inserts, so purchased some genuine caps from ebay, they were very cheap so hope there real.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg16_zpshgqbszwo.jpg&hash=2f2b7f3d0933450ef04410ed35ffc43fd3434840)

I had been after a set of these for a while now, a pair appeared on the forum and I snapped them up;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg3_zpsxivpk0ls.jpg&hash=4a9faa9907ee2045297df65d136768040c553826)

Genuine open fogs.

So all pulled of  :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg4_zpsnervuq7a.jpg&hash=3d03305be4d789cc93d69d24081ce5a5edef77ad)

All cleaned up;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg5_zpsqdhpnyxo.jpg&hash=f763629584476d8325fcd747ad6a0fdbf7999cec)

And fitted;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpseidqtlo1.jpg&hash=7502407327ceb36e5ecec68500b1481a1403f1b0)

Loving these as well, I think they make the front end look more aggressive.

So the fruits of my drunk late night splurging turned up, 1 large white box. I don't think the missus could understand how a box so light could cost so much.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsvylsxfab.jpg&hash=fc1a112db365112bd129a258b0ad5499d3dd8daa)

She was even more unimpressed when she spotted the contents of the box.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpsmndlrajk.jpg&hash=82f0130291e000261e415c6a2ae5c5c31c7b4f37)

But look I excitedly said, wheel brushes and wax a mammoth drying towel and even even iron x, this makes your car go purple. Mmmmnnnn. Silence.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg3_zpsd9x7fneq.jpg&hash=7be252e51578f489da558a1ab4278bbae7bc6525)

That's it for now more later.

So with the long weekend I decided to give the outside of the car a tidy up, test out the bits and bobs I'd bought. First off I don't have a snow foam lance so I tried a product from halfauds called demon foam I think, it has a built in head. It wasn't bad it went on quite thick but had no real dwell time. This was about 5 mins in.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg4_zpsq5jy8kee.jpg&hash=4e5c05a857010f560f8736d70a07f8d5136be892)

Unfortunately I didn't take any before piccies of the car, it was pretty filthy. Rinsed off I cleaned using the 2bm with a lambs wool wash mit and megs gold.

Not sure if the car had ever been iron x ed before, I was expecting lots of purple streaking some areas were worse than others. Man does this stuff stink though I was literally ruining my neighbours weekends with noxious emissions, kills grass as well.  :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg5_zpszhrwas3v.jpg&hash=210f9697494a947eaa2624f9275496a6225fea1c)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpseo7fpied.jpg&hash=2ba8cd812e683aa41590aad23357e0415841301c)

Over the past few weeks I had noticed the large amount of tar deposits on the paintwork, I've never used a product like this before and had my reservations but I was pleasantly surprised.

Tar removal with auto finesse obli tar ate. Play on words you see.  :signLOL:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg7_zpsdovdm2oa.jpg&hash=bfb9ae62a0a859fcaa75b4c7c80f4f0f2c4f17a3)

You can see the amount of tar on the wings, dissolved quickly and wiped excess with mf.

All washed off after decontamination etc.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg9_zps6k4iuqog.jpg&hash=2bdb59d796f489b66b7144de6e70922f5769becd)

Clayed all down, washed off and then patted dry I cracked on with the hand polishing I new I would never achieve massive results and was happy with what I got. I didn't take into account I would lose the will to live about halfway through.

The wax applicator was ace though and I loved the wax went for petes 53 I think  :signLOL:. It went on really easily smelt lovely I think it's aimed more for darker cars but I read somewhere it makes the fleck in lighter cars pop.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg10_zpsl4gbmrla.jpg&hash=638807f4241ed9c6007f6b63d4184f9024078c62)

Didn't manage to get everything done still got the interior and engine bay to do. I have bought this to have a go at the faded trim hate the colour it goes over time makes the car look really tired.

C4

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg18_zpsafkmofpb.jpg&hash=020d600f71553a39af87bef03a67ee26ab9b404a)

After my cleaning session I was going over just checking my work and noticed rust on both front sills behind where the door opens and a small bubble on one of the wings, I'm aware of the issues on the mk 5 platform. Can anyone give me any advice about how to get what i want from vw I.e full cost covered ways of wording things etc. has anyone had any experience of inchape chester.

Anyway Im cheering myself up by buying new tyres, going to wait on the recon of alloys until bodywork has been carried out by vw as they would probably use my freshly diamond cut alloys as curling stones when they get bored of not blending my wings.  :signLOL:

I opting for vredestein sessanta as I love the tred pattern, there a good price for 4 and I have read some really good reviews on them.

Still have some small jobs to attend to from previous list and I need to replace my third brake light hopefully have one on order by next week. I do find that the list just keeps growing you never seem to get on top of it.

Anyway that's all for now folks.

Hello mate do you have a link to the polo aerial?

Hey matey the chap I bought off looks to have sold out of the aerials. Here's a link to the cheapest one I can find on the bay, hope this helps.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-Polo-2010-Aerial-Rod-6R0-035-849D-/171528897642?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27efeb446a

Or you could try sending him a message through eBay to see if he has any knocking around there is a link to him in on previous page matey.

So a bit of house keeping. Should really re read the thread and see what I said I was going to do versus what I actually do, man I get waylaid. Anyway I must address the big ass box lastly posted on the thread, it contained amongst other things but mainly a new front splitter.

Now I looked at the options carefully, weighing up the cheaper ones on the bay but I just wasn't happy with the fit so in the end I had to go Oem and that's good cause it's in my members ride title and a bit of continuity always helps.

Tasty, very happy with this. Hopefully this will be painted soon as having it sat around the house is driving my missus nuts and me insane because it's not on the car. Not sure wether to have the centre done in gloss back what do you guys/girls think.

Right so a small change to the car was a pair of Oem tinted rear lights, they appeared on here and I lept on them, man you have to be quick on here  :signLOL:.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg6_zpssppolxsb.jpg&hash=2d969143784ac07dfc5f832a987872eef4ae9bd3)

Who wouldn't be happy with these. Looking at the pic though my plate has slid slightly down to one side I will have to reattach this.

Previously I said I was opting for verdstein sessenta tyres, well after weighing up the mpg rating of e I decided I couldn't stomach it for the small difference in price compared to eagle f1's, plus the fact well you know there f1's so enough said  :signLOL:. I know by the way the wheels are filthy.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg5_zps839cjvb5.jpg&hash=2b6b2a12a355791b151098cf2b59c00d2047081e)

Will eventually get another two of these on the front so matching all round. The reason for replacement, camber had destroyed the inside edge of my tyres, really hoping this won't happen quickly on the f1's otherwise I will cry. Bought and booked through black circles very happy with service I received quick and painless. Have to say as well road noise significantly reduced imo.

Onto the diverter valve, having read a lot on the subject I felt confident and prepared to crack on with this. I also decided it was appropriate to go out the night before so my small job would be accompanied with a stinking hangover. However I was spurred on by all your tales of DV change and you will be all pleased to know I suffered all the way through.

Jacked up, wheel off, jack stands in and liners out many, many, many tiny screws, I was greeted by this, a 90 acre field secreted inside the arch liner. Good little jacks with these cars as well, I was impressed.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpslwxwohpw.jpg&hash=338aa9b42c546e9062feac5858efc3214573f168)

So cleaned that out moved onto the DV.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg2_zpsiys5pyc3.jpg&hash=d63835fd01552811d6a6da2fb797ce4441091012)

The badger is in there somewhere you just have to use the force and believe. Or this little contraption I created which was in all honesty a hand, arm and shoulder saviour. Just a 1/4 inch socket with a few extensions for length, haldfords advanced I'll have you know none of your silver line crap round here  :signLOL:.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg4_zpsmmvpvpkn.jpg&hash=53fe565079312ea568cb384c95b41f9944876009)

In all honesty very easy to do hardest part was getting the arch liners back, in very fiddly. Before they went back in I gave everything a nice clean.

Where did you get the splitter from? Might help out a lot of fellas on here as it's quite in demand. I waited ages for an Oem one and ended up getting one off eBay as my patience grew thin trying to source a genuine one

Cheers matey. I have been following various threads on the ed30 splitter and like you was interested in the eBay ones, but the fit just seemed so hit and miss even from the same companies. I wasn't happy taking that gamble.

 I considered a salvaged one but I think the effort to get them up to spec I.e paint, plastic welding etc vs the price just make them a poor buy. So Oem only way to go for me. I did however have to remortgage my house and take this in a large sack to Mr awesome gti.

I look at it this way though if you ever return to standard you would probably only lose the amount you spent on a non Oem splitter.

A little light reading in between reading about and planning modifications, missus bought me this for my birthday.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpsou4lsumz.jpg&hash=77ac45dc44ba257374d98608afa2458647d82553)

Things have been fairly busy recently with just life in general so I haven't been able to spend as much time on the car as I'd like, seems like in the summer the kids have a different event on every night ahhhhhhh don't think I could take another pantomime in 30 degree heat, or a sports day in the full glare of mid afternoon sun.  :signLOL:

The standard yellow I think h7 bulbs had been bugging me for a while, not in terms of there output just how lame they looked on the front of the car.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150617_183444_zps1h5bkilk.jpg&hash=ba09701ae99b04b099fb25778df65237eb944d60)

A quick visit to power bulbs and a shifty for online discount codes I found these;

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150617_181311_zpscmmwpw0x.jpg&hash=2c79dba3c85f3e9d4a53ac8251a761e83572f765)

They also came with matching sidelight bulbs so bonus, I was a bit dubious however as these where blue glass and I thought they would stand out on the car to much.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150617_190141_zpspsdhnpsn.jpg&hash=5d72a2a01d824b2bd5eb3e3295864556d73b8f5c)

Vast improvement and I'm impressed with the sidelight bulbs, I will replace the rest of the bulbs with these so all matching.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_115502_zpsowznjwtd.jpg&hash=a92f227fb1b4e4ffef3891b8a4ff704cb86c2c22)

Soo the above pic shows the rear of my car and the complete lack of a third brake light, it has been like this since I bought it. I was promised by the dealer a new painted spoiler, as I  had pointed this out in the forecourt and having done my research knew that the only way to properly repair this was a new one. Well it never materialised and I got sick of waiting. Quick trip to tps in between pantomimes.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_114856_zpsxcofoygg.jpg&hash=9d8559fb529506e5f48a87613f41bcc29ed87859)

I decided I was going to go steady and quite cleaverly drill the lens and use the holes to pop it off so as not to damage the paint around the lens, yeah! that didn't work really. It turns out the plastic lens in the third break light of a mk5 golf gti is the most fragile substance known to science.

The slightest pressure from the bit caused the lens to shatter sending red plastic cascading down my window lodging in my wiper and covering the driveway, but it was a start and after a quick inspection I realised no damage to the paint had been caused out came the rubber mallet and screwdriver.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_120123_zpsolsbcefi.jpg&hash=4d51caf6804cb063ef7a05ab172cfec0d21dc2b0)

After removing the red lens I was met with a clear plastic one, enjoying the previous result from my assault with a screwdriver I proceeded in technichal terms to simply rag on it like a banshee till it broke.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_121625_zpsbehculid.jpg&hash=b4f38d15bb32ab7c96b244e6fb7cfda40bcca799)

You can see the studs on the far left that the screws go into on the inside of the spoiler what a genius piece of design. Close up.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_121618_zpserztpagl.jpg&hash=2b5497bf9b7b91dcac637e2740329220f6df0452)

Here I had to delicately smash the plastic around the stud. You can use whichever blunt object you desire, I plumbed for the screwdriver as it was already in my hand.

The lens unit fell out after the last barrage with the screwdriver leaving only the studs these where a bit fiddly to remove you can get you finger in and pin them from behind and unscrew them.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_121943_zps4yyqewhj.jpg&hash=e6f7f9ca694a646a109a9efd6095a9cc6be302dd)

Fun part over now came the grommet or as I like to call it the knuckle shredder, it s on the end of this wire it will come out although only after the plastic around the hole has completely shredded your fingers.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_121949_zps1ofcrlbw.jpg&hash=bdffcd5af6300fc71d67641f7f99200a8e1a3e65)

After this I decided a quick sports day was in order. :signLOL:

Here's the little blighter I decided I would cut it in half to make my fingers feel better and to make it a little easier to compress through the hole in the spoiler.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_122436_zps9arxiq6p.jpg&hash=612bc7d98e4499b96db427a2826a9d527cca5184)

And the connecter behind.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_122705_zpseyc4dxvs.jpg&hash=d952d903ea168e4128d30f296f656fbad0b88946)

Fairly straightforward after this just the reversal of the process with less emphasis on the smashing. I didn't bother glueing the new unit in it held really well on the clips. Standing back I admired my handiwork.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_123658_zpsbdh5h9fy.jpg&hash=b8f483f4d07e77ac37ace0d351fb6695c276e67a)

That's better, rushing inside I proudly displayed the remnants of my vanquished foe to my missus. like a returning hunter I announced my successful replacement of my brake light in what would turn out to be a loud and excitable manner the end result being waking the baby and a bollicking.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150620_124232_zpsuqjg41xr.jpg&hash=65d5cfa5f2eb0dc0ff9554db7fe967a09935b8ee)

More to follow.

I bought this a while back, I have always been displeased with the ones available on eBay. Having bought one before the quality wasn't great and the sizing was non Oem. I noticed that the mk7 gti on some models had a red badge do decided to gamble and order one. I was a bit annoyed that for the price it was still only vinyl that coloured the badge.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg12_zpsgvsvelvm.jpg&hash=6dcff024569ed661d6f584a79d2f053dfff06fe7)

However the quality was good so I decided to fit it. Old wonky badge denta flossed off.

My car is in at the moment for wings, sills and a new coil pack.

How are you getting on with the Gtechniq C4? I'm pretty sure I will order some.

Finally if you haven't sold the foot rest I would be interested in it?

Hey matey I haven't had the time to try the c4 yet it gets great reviews on a lot of other car forums, they love it over on Clio sport. I might end up buying new oem grills to refresh the front end. It just seems so time consuming to use the c4. As for the footrest your quite welcome to it dude still have it in my big pile of parts  :signLOL:.

Glad your enjoying it dude. I try and use just original parts It's hard trying to stick to your principals though because they just cost so much, bought some bits today from tps and it worked out eye blisteringly expensive. They always ask if your in the trade first and I swear I can hear a cha Ching on the end of the phone when I say no.  :signLOL:

Look forward to seeing the new bits! I Only bought a MK5 GTI in the last 2 months and have already done a few bits, sure to start my own thread sooner or later! When you bought the Phillips headlights, did the sidelights come as free, as part of the deal? The headlights look so much better and I think I will get some when its pay day.

:signLOL:

Of them there are lots lol. Yer get a thread up dude although be warned it will start snowballing next thing you know your lawnmower is outside and the shed is full of retrofit parts. The sidelights certainly did come for free in same box. For what they are I think there ace, your not going to get xenons but for twenty pounds I think a vast improvement. Looking at it not sure you can get any whiter without either being illegal or not as powerful.

I bought from power bulbs if you do a quick search for a promo code for them in Google you can usually get another 10 % of at checkout.

Time for an update me thinks. I will admit that I very rarely re read this thread so don't really have a clue what mods I planned at the start. I find my modding to be purely guided by the for sale section of this forum.

I had my eye on these for a while, I've never really been keen on aftermarket tints but wanted the look, I opted for the sonniboy interior screens as these provided tint and came with no adjoining line in the boot section.

For the price these are great give the car a far more aggressive exterior and the kids love them because they have something to mess with in the back, rear cup holders can now breathe a sigh of relief.

A box arrived, love getting car related parcels even though you know what's in them. The missus hates them she knows I'll probably disappear at some point on the weekend and leave oily fingerprints everywhere.

Evoms cai, it was always going to end like this, you new what this was, bloody forum.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo780%2Fcrompt2011%2Fimage.jpg1_zpslcqq12j8.jpg&hash=8aa82d6454c8100cfdf010a120835fb829bacb36)

Went for the evoms for many reasons, I like the way it looks really un subtle, price and great reviews. I also like that it retains the stock air intake for its feed. It was fairly straight forward to fit, even with the lack of instructions it's fairly self explanatory.

But people I cannot stress enough don't go into fitting the heat shield without the correct socket because you will feel the pain ( as I did) for half an hour they made me there man hor.  :signLOL:

Basically the plastic disintegrated leaving a smaller captive nut and I thought yeah fine get a spanner on it, but it wouldn't come it just wouldn't, no because there s a bloody nut on the other side of it that you can't see without psycic ability s, or 5 minutes of research. Who does that, who?  :signLOL:

Rant over, stock intake removed

I really like it makes some great noises but I think they need to be louder either that or I'm going deaf. The plan from here is to get the evoms engine cover and customise it slightly. I also bought some oem Audi r8 coil packs from awesome gti to compliment the evoms bits but I have discovered they are not the genuine Audi ones so will be up for sale and I'll order the others. Also plan to clean this area as well when I get the chance.

I've been busy collecting bits to upgrade my headunit. I decided that I didn't want a sat nav unit so went for the rcd 510 dab.

Genuine rcd510 dab
Genuine polo aerial and base
New gateway for battery drain
Dab cable and fm/am connectors

More to follow

25 pounds from garage midnight matey, it finishes it off quite well and serves a purpose. Just need some m6 bolts for it so I can get rid of what's left of the original ones.  :signLOL:

So the missus and kids were away for a long weekend. I took this as the opportunity to install the headunit bits I'd been collecting. I aimed to complete the retrofit in a day but I decided to book the Monday of work in case I broke the car somehow. :signLOL:

I bought the rcd 510 dab second hand and although the screen was perfect the piano black surround had some scratch's around the knobs from nails at a guess. On a hunch I ordered from the O2 store some displex polish for mobile phone screens. The night before the retrofit I polished the piano black areas with displex applied to cotton buds. Some of the scratch's were fairly deep but after a few applications I was really pleased with the results.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_092907_zpszdda1vrp.jpg&hash=cfea1bf4dede10c615fcef936fdc716bceb89c28)

The day started wet and I started hungover, I had picked up all the essential kit I needed leading up to the retrofit. The most critical being some decent trim removal tools. I would have been lost without these they are that good, caused no damage/scratches to any trim pieces and can really handle the force you have to put behind them.
 (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_092932_zpsylpsqviz.jpg&hash=6ff064fb8e5034434139d2d0778100a0475dff7b)

This was the last time my car would be whole again for the next few hours.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_093503_zpsdwxxkfde.jpg&hash=54487386a9a86e4539d84e7469a250774f2e7858)

First job disconnect the battery first as a safety measure, don't forget to open your boot first as I did. Nothing left but to dive in, I followed various guides, if anyone needs any help with routing give me a shout and I will put the guides on here.

Headunit removed, clocks removed and trim down drivers sides for dab cable routing.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_111219_zps9ghkdtp4.jpg&hash=8bd06bb307300b945109f0fa4bd34d7cf0077da3)

When I looked at the bits on the table I did start to worry. I have to confess I did break a piece of trim when getting access to replace the aerial, man was I pissed off. This will be replaced next month along with the airbag badge from c pillar.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_112234_zpsroxmv113.jpg&hash=eaabd5dafac008a51206f1068c2b75388a238e50)

When peeps say this is a bitch do do there not lying, you have to drop the headlining and have to be mega careful not to crease it. It's really fiddly, with not a lot of room to work on removing the nut to aerial base. The nuts massive which doesn't help as you need a huge socket or spanner.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_1112300_zpswmpxkul0.jpg&hash=6b98af6424399bc9c42d388288b3f529be4ec519)

Removed old base I grabbed the new dab base (it has different connections to the standard one, black for dab) and replaced.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_111246_zpspfjtbzec.jpg&hash=98c88401ef0dfea80d1325bc648eb9ce6bd3b46b)

Headunit installed the dab cable was routed behind the clocks along drivers sill and up the c pillar to the headlining. Many airbags in the car hiding behind trim.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_112308_zpsrbrfpoe8.jpg&hash=8b6d590b0ad1f11f5c3187d600a31cf310289ee7)

Easy part next put it back together, whilst I had the trim of I replaced the gateway with a newer pre coded version which was probably the easiest part.  :signLOL:

By Jove it only bloody works.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150802_160810_zpskg06jiht.jpg&hash=44117c68441681a6877f9f897276cefc53565dfd)

When everything was back together I did have a number of fault codes, upon scanning and on the dash. Dash faults were cleared in usual way steering left to right driving forwards etc. codes found by vcds were cleared. Planning on scanning again this weekend to check there has been no reoccurrence of these. These are more than likely related to the gateway change as opposed radio installation many thanks to the guys who answered my urgent pleas for help.

A few close ups of polished piano black fascia, scratch free.

Having changed the aerial I spent a lot of time crawling around the boot, I realised that the dark brown colour in the boot carpet was not oem and was in fact red animal fur. I can only hazard a guess the previous owner ran some sort or fox/animal rescue buisness and used the gti and its boot as an emergency vehicle.

It was everywhere apart from the floor which had mercifully been lined.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fcrompt2011%2FMobile_Uploads%2F20150803_121252_zpssbkdmqzu.jpg&hash=3fb7a6e4a52a8bae650c2b421caed919eb377288)

It wouldn't Hoover so hopping on the Internet I found this handy tip, it works best with the yellow marigolds, didn't have them so raided the first aid kit for latex gloves. With gloves on you can rub the fur into balls and then out of the carpet, simply Hoover these up, looks a lot better now. Will give it another going over then a shampoo, wierdly there has never been any smell of dogs which you would expect with this amount of fur.

The whole interior had a good going over after this and came up lovely. It left the outside feeling neglected so was only right she had a little wash.
