Guys,
Very happy as my RNS-510 has just arrived :happy2:
Is there a retrofit guide anywhere please?
I currently have the standard GTI CD player (RCD-xxx something?) and couldn't find how to remove this, frontal clips or holes etc...
I don't want to damage either unit and will need a guide for the extra GPS connections etc.
Thanks,
Pete.

The only one I could find is here but its a bit sparse.

i'll help you gather info too, mines ready to go in - audio guy just needs to know how to make a line out
-
how comes your getting rid of aftermarket VC?
-
It's a styling thing, what I have is superb and works with the iPhone too but fancy a change
-
VC - Might help http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3647765
I'm at work so can't full screen to give a proper verdict but looks like it has images with steps :happy2:
-
Don't forget it will be worthwhile getting it coded into the car as well using VCDS :happy2:
-
....hang on a moment....coding....? thats the part my audio guy wont be able to do. ive got one for the eos which i thought would just be a swap, and for mine which i thought would be a swap plus making a line out for the amp etc
i think i need to be paying more attention...i'm clearly way off the mark then?

nice link, i think i'll just print everything off and give it to the guy to work out, my brain doesnt absorb this kind of thing :ashamed:

^^^ It's nothing to be concerned about VC it will most probably be fine.
The problem can be if the unit is second hand and coded for a car with say Dynaudio or the VW soundpack then the speaker outputs won't be at the right level and it will sound pants.
If you are every on a trip to Northampton or London then just drop me a line and I will sort it for you :happy2:

I ended up using the guide here (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3121070). Took me 45 minutes, and that included tracing and removing all the cables for the old Nokia car kit and the iPod adapter. A few trim tools, a Torx T20 and a bit of patience and preparation was all it took. Just be careful as you remove the trim round the head unit - the clips on the back look quite fragile.
Luckily for me, no coding needed for the basics (as I took an MFD2 out) and luckily as well the audio is fine - in fact it's a lot better than the MFD2.
Bound to be a bit of coding this weekend though - not got the track displaying in the dash yet, and there's the small matter of the RSAP Bluetooth kit and MFSW buttons sitting on the table......
-
Thanks for the link to the guide Mark, looks more intuitive than the one I found.
I understand the RNS-510 supports USB, how does this work? There seems to be no USB connection anywhere, do I have to purchase an extra connection lead or port?
-
You would need the MDI interface. I believe it goes in place of your CD changer but have been known to be wrong in the past.
-
CD changer - in the centre console front arm rest area?
I guess this is yet more complicated wiring? :sad1:
Cheers,
Pete.

No in the back of the unit you can place the interface where you like.
-
Ah, sorry fella.
So this comes with a USB port attached?
How much is it from VAG direct?
Don't really know what I'm looking for but I'll have a look around.
Cheers.
-
^^^ Ebay.de is the cheapest place for the MDI :happy2:
-
Do I need the whole lot or can I get away with just this Steve:

In the meanwhile, the SD card functionality is supported without the MDI isn't it?
Cheers

That's just the adapter cable for the MDI box (the MDI supports aux in, iPod or USB via different cables), so you need to get something like this (as an example, you can get it cheaper than this): -

-
Not wishing to drag this off topic any further but last year my dealer was offering the MDI installed for £200.
On top of that you had to pick your interface which was £30-40 but on the face of it it seemed a good deal.
Shame I didn't take them up on it. :ashamed:

So I do need the full lot? Okay, cheers pal.
Does that go in the glovebox where I'm currently keeping my car handbook nice and neatly? I don't want to lose that slot :P

That one goes in the arm rest

dude your really are a leg end, i doubt if i would be near you for a while but that offer is superb none the less, thankyou, very kind
i keep reading this thread and the links, nothing is sinking in
i'm more practical, i play with shapes and colours all day not this wiring witchcraft :chicken:
i'm gunna weigh my poor install dude down with printouts, just got to hope i dont have to plug it in to solve issues on a laptop
-
VC let me know how your audio man gets a line out for the amp. By installing the RNS i hoped it would help convince me id out grown my speakerage, but if theres a way to run an amp off it id be tempted to stretch my youthful side a bit longer.
-
sure will mate :happy2:
ive got all my audio installed and in place (speakers/sub/amp not the rns yet), the hold up is merely figuring out how to get everything working...ive not even addressed the iphone part of it yet as that seems just as complicated
-
What checkboxes do I have to tick in VAGCOM?
Just sat in the car with the head unit and the tools, then had a horrible thought that it wouldn't work without my laptop and VCDS cable, but wasn't sure what to check once I'd plugged it in :scared:?
Ta.

Because I hadn't disconnected the battery prior to fitting the unit, I ha several errors which once cleared never returned. Go to navigation module. Might be convenience I think. Just went along the bits until I found the tick box for satnav installed.
-
You need to go into Can Gateway I think its controller 19, on the controller screen go into the Installation List and go half way down the page to controller 37 and tick this then Save Coding, Go out of the controller.
Go into controller 37 Navigation and then into Coding and then Long Coding:
Byte 0 The first 2 boxes should not bit ticked, Unless you have CD changer/MDI media in or Aux in

Byte 2 This is how many channels you have working i.e front or back or front and back:(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss4%2Fmortygttdi%2FByte2.jpg&hash=67e89ff4f4800bf9d3dad7b7aaa18187c9c22e48)
Byte 3 This is for the Mic Diagnostics if you have voice control and also if you have the badge camera in the back like a couple of people,

Byte 7 Some of the bits in this Byte you may not have if your using f/w 1100 or lower but this is for MFSW, screen colours and comms to the highline. None of them should be ticked unles you have a mk6 golf or dont have voice control.

Hope this helps and just one more thing you cannot use any version of VCDS lower than 9XX
Cheers
