Hello guys, I need some help with my 2005 MK5 GTI.
Before Christmas I bought a nearly new Helix clutch and single mass flywheel (used for 3k and supplied and removed by AKS tuning) and a second hand box with Quaife ATB LSD already installed. I got these fitted and within 500 metres I knew it wasn't right. The car is standard otherwise.
The diff was definitely working but on deceleration / overrun there was a loud sort of grinding noise. It was noticeably louder at higher revs and got a bit louder as the engine warmed up. It happened in every gear but disappeared as soon as you dipped the clutch. I think it may do it on acceleration too but it is much quieter if it is.
After speaking to a few people I had the box taken off again and took it to a local gearbox specialist. He said the diff looked fine but a few gears were worn so he replaced these (by canabalizing the original box) and did a general overhaul / refurb replacing anything that looked tired.
Anyway, I had the box fitted again today with new OEM box oil (recommend by Quaife). So I picked the car up again tonight, and it is exactly the same!
I just don't know what to do, and no one in my area seems to be able to sort it and it is costing a fortune in labour, oil etc.
Does anybody have any ideas or recommendations!?
Any help very much appreciated :sad1:
Cheers!

Did you have a new release bearing fitted ?? I can only assume someone has checked it since the box has been removed , are you taking into account the added noises you get when going smf?
-
Thanks for the reply mate, yes I had a new one before fitting. To be honest it's the first SMF I've had, but know a few people who have had them in the past and dont remember it being anything like this. Would a SMF be pretty loud on overun? It is a very metal on metal type noise.

Like a straight cut gaerbox ? I've only heard them on old Mimi's and they sound wrong/broken but is perfectly normal...
Might be worth utubeing a video so ppl can hear

Hi mate, did you sort noise problem on gearbox?
I have same problem, also helix clutch and single mass flywheel
-
Possibly the clutch all smf clutches I have used do it
How much did the box rebuild cost out of interest
-
was that sound same as mine?

It's proberly the SMF they cause vibrations
Or the only other thing I can suggest is the bearings (internally)

Its your SMF mate its called chattering and one minute it can be fairly quiet, the next rather loud, ive got a loba sachs setup mine does it too

It was £288 mate - I know some parts were new, others were re-cycled from my other (good) box

I can't really hear for that mate (over the intake) but to be honest I tried to video mine and it dIdnt really record very loud at all

Thanks mate, at high revs it's always loud (very loud!) but at low revs and idle it can be worse sometimes than others. I still think it's worse than it should be as everyone getting in the car thinks the engines about to blow up haha but it does reassure me a little!
