So this happened a few nights ago! Can't believe it, wedged the cam, stopping the engine and snapping the cambelt. Also bent a few valves in the process, gutted! Always serviced low mileage etc etc, can't believe the tensioner is sort of plastic! You guys heard of this before?

Here's what it should look like

I've seen quite a few people replace the can chain but not seen a failure before. That's real bad luck man. What you going to do, rebuild the engine?
-
How was she sounding before this? Another ED30 owner has recently posted regarding the dreaded diesel noise.
-
mine had the bottom right hand portion broken off when my engine failed (AXX engine 87k) im not 100% sure what caused the failure but i had a snapped exhaust cam aswell, cost me around £900 to put right (replacement head, timing belt kit, cam chain & tensioner, 4x injector rebuild kits, some bolts, gaskets and broken dipstick tube and evap hose, also had to buy the cam locking kit and a polydrive bit for the head bolts adjuster bolt) did all the work myself so no labour charges
-
No warning signs, no more noise than normal, shocked!
Pistons and cylinders ok, just the valves gone, from what we can see so far!
So going to be rebuilt, new valves, belt kit and cam chain and tensioner and gaskets where needed.

That is a sickening story and sight to see mate
Ive had nothing but niggly problems with my Gti recently and just keep thinking something terminal is going to hit the car next! (2007 Gti)
Seriously considering chopping her in for new car or even leasing as bloody sick of the hastle with used cars lately!
Good luck getting it sorted mate hope its not as bad as you think!

Not good this! Didnt know they would fail like this, had the chain tensioner and adjuster done on my GTI in December as it was noisy. Cost me £815 though :( ^^same as above with my GTI atm...lots of bits going wrong! Hoping the turbo actuator is the last thing for a while now....

My tensioner went a while back and to my amazement timing didn't jump .all fine . Scary though and £600 notes lighter to sort it

Lucky boy!
