Now, oil is oil, right? I mean, can it really make that much of a difference in engines? Turns out...

Wouldn't have thought oil would have made such a difference.
This should end the questions/posts of which oil to buy then!
-
Hmm an interesting read.. Might try it instead of my Castrol Edge.
The 5w30 or 5w40 debate still rages on though. Tuned car owners seem to favour 5w40 from looking at various threads?
-
I'm pretty sure you can only get 5w40 in the millers anyways so that argument is void luckily.

Also reading the only review on that (from fast car) they fail (unless i'm blind) if the oil in the car was fresh normal oil, or had been sitting in the car for the last year or so. As new oil the same brand as before would have also helped boost output.
... my two cents

They say that the oil and filters are changed to halfords own prior to the test...
-
Yep i see it now..... :stupid: I must be getting old....
-
Saying that, wouldnt the test be better using a better made product like Millers standard stuff?
Its like comparing Lidl's to Waitrose non?!

Back on topic, Millers rocks. That is all

The use of Halford's oil seems unfair, but the point was to highlight that oil isn't just oil and that spending the extra cash is actually worth it. I would be surprised if there's such a difference between Shell Helix 5w-40 and Millers Nanodrive 5w-40 for example.
I like the fact no-one has called me a chav so far for being a Fast Car reader... :innocent:

I thought fast car died with lax powder lol.
Thats fine but how many people reading said mag are going to stick grotty halfrauds oil in their car?!?!
Id of said it would have been a better test between something like mobil being used....... The pro race i used to use in my cosworth was less than that stuff for 10ltrs and theres no way I'm paying out £80 for 5 ltrs of oil

Yeah, I'd like to see it against a more competitive rival, but there you go. Have a feeling that some freebies/money traded hands between Millers and Fast Car in order to make the results as good as possible. Also worth of note is the higher level of tune both cars appear to run, I'd be surprised if such a difference is felt in stock/stage 1 engines.
-
The way I see it is I don't expect BHP gains from oil, if I get it then that's a bonus. I just want my engine as well lubricated as possible since it gets well used and I want to look after it and for something that costs £20-£30 more for a bottle once every 6 - 10 months I'll buy it every time.
-
These engines and many others inc race engines have survived this long without nano tech, just another fad imo.

I just stick to genuine oil from TPS. Saves the squabbles lol

As with most branded stuff, peel away the label and it's all the same. It's down to the specifications of the oil (which is a string of numbers), I'll try and find the article I read a while back that describes what to look for. Although, as you say, buying the genuine VW guarantees the right spec for your engine when stock but maybe not when running any form of tuning beyond a 20% power increase.
-
Im pretty much close to a stage2. My next service is soon also. I haven't really looked into oil to be fair. It was on the list of home work to do

I just wanted to help clear up the whole "Genuine VW oil" argument. I assume the oil you are referring to is the Quantum oil from both TPS and the dealership? (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fquantum.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk%2Fthemes%2Fquantum%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2FLubricants%2FZGB115QLB00501.jpg&hash=cdf4b2c895984e7d6ecbb320a3d63d984ba3849d)
Just be aware that there is no such thing as "Genuine VW" oil. When you go to the dealership for a service, the oil they use wont necessarily be the quantum stuff - sometimes its Castrol, sometimes its Shell Helix - depending on who has the supplying contract at the time.
The Quantum brand itself is part of VW UK only (not VW the car maker). If you ask for Quantum oil in Germany, they wont have a clue what you are talking about as its only available in the UK.
Quantum branded goods range from engine oil to rubber gloves to light bulbs - and not just for VAG vehicles either. You might find a lot of quantum branded products in motor factors.
Quantum products are not the same as VW Genuine Parts - at TPS and some dealerships, you can buy both Genuine VW screen wash as well as Quantum branded screen wash for instance - they are not the same thing.
Im not saying Quantum oil isnt good enough for our cars - it is as it meet the VW 504 and 507 standards, but please dont think that just because you buy it from the dealership/TPS its any better or better suited for our cars (over other oil brands).
Quantum is just a brand that makes "automotive parts and consumables" for many different makes but just happens to be part of VW UK (not the Volkswagen Group)
Hope this clears things up.

I only ever use Millers, Castrol or Shell. Can't go wrong with either.
-
Thanks richtung, good explanation. I've been using Shell Helix for quite a while now as it's quite cheap and seems to keep my engine happy.

Well explained. Just gotta see what oil is best for stage2
-
Thanks richtung, good explanation. I've been using Shell Helix for quite a while now as it's quite cheap and seems to keep my engine happy.
Do you use the shell helix AV-L (not available from ECP), developed with VAG for VAG cars, or the generic helix ultra (available from ECP)?
I wonder if its the same stuff, for ford or whomwever, just with different labels......
-
Might be worth asking @oilman (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=611) to comment as they sell Millers Nanodrive as well as the other well known and respected brands of oil...
