Title: Product Recommendations Please
Post by: a8rnx on February 09, 2015, 12:29:40 pm
Afternoon guys,

My mk5 gti is currently having an overhaul and during this time I wanted to get all the mechanical stuff sorted too, it may/may not need it but for my own piece of mind I rather have it all done ready for the show season/year ahead!

Will be having a full service, it's running an r-tech stage 1 custom at the minute, which oil would be best?
I want to upgrade the suspension bushes on the front, which ones are best to change? Wishbones? Anything else? Also which brand would be best?
Gearbox oil I would like to change, again, which brand?
Brake fluid - same as above?
Engine mounts?
Tyres - My only option is 215/35/19 due to wheel choice etc, which brands are recommended?

Any other suspension/mechanical upgrade recommendations would be greatly appreciated as I have done a fair bit of research but there is a hugeeee amount of information out there & is slightly overwhelming! Cam follower, rev g dv, pcv etc has all been done a few months back too.

Thanks in advance guys, much appreciated! :happy2:

Oils different ppl will say different things, 0-40, 5-30, different makes.... if it meets/exceeds the VW standards then it's good to use. From another forum the list goes...
500.00
501.01
502.00
503.00
503.01
504.00
and depends on what services schema you are on as to what oil.

Suspension, alot fo people on here have said the WALK kit makes a huge difference, even on it's own.
gearbox oil, same as engine oil, different ppl swear by different stuff, but as long as it meets VW standards (someone must have a list some where for gearbox oil)
Brake fluid, i think they say to complete flush every 2 years ?!? and the normal is DOT 4

OTHER PEOPLE please correct me if i'm wrong.
All the above depends on what the car is going to be used for, i.e. track cars will have 'better' oil and fluids, due to harsh/hard driving styles.

I hope this helps

Gearbox oil = 3 bottles bought from VW
Brake fluid = get this done by a garage, shouldn't cost that much and not worth the hassle DIY
Engine oil = castrol edge FST 5/30. Buy from ECP or TPS (if you local TPS is public friendly)
Tyres = do a search as this has been covered waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy too many times

Get the Superpro Anti Lift Kit (SALK) over the WALK. The SALK is better quality, and won't split unlike the WALK which have been proven to split by numerous owners in here.

As for everything else:

Engine oil: Millers Nanodrive 5w40
Gear oil: Vw
Brake fluid: VW
Tyres: Michelin Pilot Super Sport (nothing else compares).
Engin mounts: Revo or OEM (if you don't want the vibration). Get the Powerflex lower engine mount bush, and engine mount insert (awesome GTI) to firm up the drivetrain.
