Title: Marky N - VW Golf MKV GTi
Post by: MarkyN on February 09, 2015, 07:08:17 pm

Picked up the Golf GTi. Sad day to see the BMW being put to once side for sale but happy to be able to get myself finally into a GTi after looking for a good one for around 2 years.
Here's a picture that had been taken from the sales advert on AutoTrader

For now it's completely standard but am sure some slight modifications will be happening soon. Just a quick picture after the CLB Candy SnowFoam has finished its job.

Seen this for sale when I was looking for mine!

Good choice on colour  :happy2: What's the mileage, service history etc like?

The mileage is just above 70k. Full service history. Got the DSG box serviced before I bought it from them too. Also had a PDI check on it before they sold it to me. Found a rear caliper was abit iffy so they changed that for me too. Really impressed with the car to be honest mate. Solid car throughout. Think am gonna be keeping it for a fair few years seeming I will rarely drive it. I work in a quarry so I got a pickup to get me to work and back.  :happy2:

At the moment its staying standard. If any modding goes on it won't be for a while, also it will be just OEM+ styling I think

My AutoSmart Silver Seal kit got delivered today. Nice to know people in the right places. DISCOUNT PRICES

So up to now I have been able to do the complete interior. All cloth seats, seat belts, floor. I have left the car mats at the moment, there is slight wear on them so am waiting to find some new ones, get them ordered and I'll finish off the sealing on the interior then

Rear wiper delete today. I was going to get the glass insert but am abit unsure on it at the moment, I think I need to see one in the flesh done. For now I have got myself a plastic cover (26mm) and inserted that at the moment. Up to now, I think it's making the rear end of the car a lot more smooth looking. Think this might grow on me.

A better picture after the rear wiper delete. Also had chance to give the car a quick polish tonight, still a lot of swirl marks but getting the machine on it the weekend! Also amazing what a abit of plastic bumper care can do. From grey and tired looking to gloss black fresh looking!

How does the Autosmart kit work exactly? Sounds like something I could be interested in!

You get a spray can for the cloth interior. Just spray that on as a mist, cover all places that you would want to be protected. Also makes it water resistant. Came in handy today when I split a drink down myself and onto the front seats!  :surprised: but just beaded on the seat and I was able to just wipe up with a cloth easy. No stains left.

The wash you get with it is best used after a full on wash of the exterior, then you get another aerosol can after the full wash. Spray on as a mist on each panel, rub on with the sponge provided and buff off with a microfibre cloth. Once done only wash the car with the wash liquid that is provided. Leaves the body work like glass and extremely protected.

My rear badge had bad white worm appearing so sorted myself a MK4 Golf badge from my brothers 2.8 V6 after him changing his for a smaller sharan one.
Managed to spray paint the mechanism the same colour as the car and fit the MK4 emblem. It's not a bad fitting either to be honest

Well I have had non stop trouble with the standard headunit. Sometimes it would work, other times it would work but no speakers, most of the times I'd get a red flash every now and again and that would be it.

18/19 seconds in...

So after selling my BMW yesterday I had a nice amount of spare cash so I headed out to get a new headunit. Ended up buying a Sony Double Din. Quite happy with the look of it and it seems to work very well up to now.
Had a bit of a mess around with it last night and go it set up how I want it now.
This picture was taken before I messed around with the setting

No not yet. Am not having any problems at the moment so I was thinking not to bother but from what I read they worth doing as well when you get a car service done. I should be getting it in for a full service late summer time so I'll get it done then, unless they need doing before hand

Well today I got the wheels off the golf, rubbed down the brake calipers and gave them a fresh couple of coats of red hammerite. the calipers hadn't been painted since factory I don't think as they were looking fairly pink before I went over them

I then checked over the engine and realised I got some bits in here that would look rather nice in carbon. So I got the hydrodipping tank up and running.
So this happened

All lacquered and put back into the car

My brother is a painter and he advised me to clean them up as best as I could, then rub sandpaper on then just to make them up, gives the paint something to grip on to.
No pictures sorry. I'll try get some after

Come to have a look at my cam follower today, I taken off all the electric cable side of things, released the fuel pipe but nothing it wouldn't come off. As I looked again there is another metal pipe connected to the bottom of it, Sam style as the fuel one.
I checked YouTube for videos etc and none of the cars I found have this on? Just the single fuel one I released on mine.
Any help with this one people?

The dreaded banjo bolt again.

U need an M8 triple square to get it off.

Yeah as dazza said you need an m8 triple square.

I got a set of eBay for cheap.

To actually remove the bolt you'll need a small ratchet spanner (small because of the limited space, and ratchet also because of the limited space)

I'd put a rag or something underneath the fuel pump to catch anything if you drop it

Picked up some coilovers this weekend  fitted the rear ones, came to do the front ones and the previous owner had butchered ever nut. So I have had to order some new drop links and I have had to give everything I can a good wire brush and soak in WD40. Copper grease will be going on everything as I put it all back together but for now it's a full stop. The drop link on the driver side looks to be really long, doesn't seem right, so hopefully new OEM drop links will sort that out. Also waiting on spring clamps from a mate to fetch up this week. Then I'll have to get tracking done, which I noticed today is eating away at my front tires inside walls, not very good from the past seller seeming it flew through an MOT 2 weeks before I bought it, even though I have the MOT pass. Never mind, soon should be all done.

Anyone have any little tips to help me when the coilovers?

Yes easy job to do @shoaybmakda (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12148) just used good metal polish, 0000 grade wire wool and some buffing clothes. Really does make a different

did you just scrub the exhaust with the wire wool and then buff with the clothes + polish?

@Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) I put the metal polish in with a cloth but quite thick, cover the whole tip, then I worked it in with the wool. After that I got a clean cloth and buffed it up, if still not shiney / clean enough just repeat the procedure

Well last night I went to my local Volkswagen dealership, picked up the Cam Follower and seal, which was the plan to fit when I had got home.
Then I had a few texts of the lads about tips on lowering my car. So the spanners came out and the suspension was stripped.
I had tried doing it for 2 days in the week but realised that the front end need to be completely off the floor, the droplinks removed on both sides and the job is simple.
So that's what was done.

Plenty of WD40 and swear words were involved in this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmark106%2FVW_Golf_GTi%2FCF8F123E-37DB-40C9-A766-691E14693C8F.jpg&hash=e2d0c97b9fe464b0218ee2553667e51910985b4e)

Then they finally came out!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmark106%2FVW_Golf_GTi%2FB26BD64E-B6F7-4F04-B6A1-061FE4F57AB8.jpg&hash=34d5a7238d7c1197f0963a9bd4965100f2ddcad0)

Now this is how the car site are the moment. The rear is all the way down but sits just right for myself, just slightly about the rear tire which is what I was after.
The front have another 1/2 inch left to turn down if I want too but at the moment k think where it is, it's just about right. I might taken them down a few more turns but see what they look like after a few days of settling in.

Fitted the brand new one and now the GTi doesn't sound like a derv.

Happy days  :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

@James10 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12810) since I have changed it, it seems a lot less like a derv. Thinking I'll do the diverter valve next but unsure on which the best one is to go for

I havn't heard the derv sound can be attributed to the cam follower before

@Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) a few people have said this but since I have changed mine it's a different car. The MPG is slightly better and the engine is a lot quieter too

I've had abit of a nightmare with mine, banjo bolt dropped somewhere in the engine bay and we spent hours finding it and failed :-( so now my car can't move from the garage until new banjo bolt arrives tomorrow morning from TPS.........p***** off!!!

Looking at the brighter side....I'll have a new banjo bolt which my mechanic is paying for!!

Old 1 on the right at 99k

My rear badge had bad white worm appearing so sorted myself a MK4 Golf badge from my brothers 2.8 V6 after him changing his for a smaller sharan one.
Managed to spray paint the mechanism the same colour as the car and fit the MK4 emblem. It's not a bad fitting either to be honest

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fmark106%2FVW_Golf_GTi%2F3C52AE71-8236-4581-B2CB-8E371DFD9BA6.png.jpeg&hash=5affc02056c01347aae925714152a0da850ee1fc)

This is what I have got to do, got the badge ready to go! - Were there any holes you had to fill in before putting the badge over the top of it? - I didn't think about spraying it tbh as thought it may be ok in the black plastic (my car is black too), but think I might spray it now after seeing this  :happy2:

I have to do it as well, but have heard different cars have different mechanisms.

Mine’s an 05. If yours is the same do you mind running through the process with me/us?

@Peskyjones (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11854) I took the old badge off, mines an 05, just pull slowly all around and the whole badge will come off. Leaving you with the black plastic base. Clean that up, get all the stickyness off it, fill in the small hole at the top of the mechanism then I put a MK5 boot badge on mine but I am lead to believe that the MK6 one fits a lot better.

I done all this while on the car, I just made sure the complete rear end was masked up and I done all the spraying and filling in my garage, so out of the wind

Bought some roof bar today. Genuine VW ones. Fitted nicely, came to fit my Thule bike carrier and can't get the brackets to go anywhere near the bars. Looks like I will have to get the brackets fabricated to fit  :surprised:

If you remove the rubber centre rubber from the bars these a track for "T" bars
What cycle carriers you using?
Here's an example of the T track system

If you check the instruction manual at the bottom of page 4 shows the T track kits, the oem bars are 20mm so you need kit 889-2  :happy2:

Got my hands on some 15mm spacers for the rear yesterday so fitted them.
Running with standard 17" Monza wheels and tires, lowered on JOM coilovers but just the springs in the rear. No bumpstops.

Up to no it sits just right I think in my eyes, no rubbing.

Pictures to follow

Fitted a Nuespeed induction kit today. Got it 2nd hand but cleaned the filter out with some cleaner and re-oiled.

Gives of a nice 'whoosh' sound when the turbo starts to kick in but am thinking a diverter valve and a DV+ next

Fitted the new revision pipe etc and now getting a slight 'blowing over a bottle lid' / 'whistle' noise.
I have read it's because of the open air filter induction kit.

Anyone got any more feedback on this?
