Hi Guys,
Seemed silly posting this in the new members section as I joined some time ago after leaving a deposit on a silver ED30 with a garage in Sunderland, which I then pulled out of as there was some issues with the car. Ultimately went for an S3 instead.
I'm now looking to scratch the ED30 itch after selling my 2007 S3, whilst a great car, just ultimately felt a little soulless and boring.
Recent car history...
Civic Type-R EP3
MK5 Golf R32
2005 Impreza STI
Astra VXR Nurburgring Edition
2006 Impreza STI
2007 Audi S3
A few questions I have as a prospective ED30 owner...
The MK5 steering wheel is looking a little dated, I'm aware of the guides to swap out with a MK6 wheel, but is there anyone in the North-East area who would do this as a paid service? Does the MFSW/DSG all work afterwards?
I've never owned an auto but am very tempted with DSG, has anyone done the same and have regrets?
Finally - did the ED30 ever have leather seats or are all the legacy tartan look?
I'm located in Hartlepool if there's any friendly yokels in the Teeside area :)

Welcome back
@skard (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4048) might do the wheel conversion for you
-
Thanks pal :happy2:
Do you know where stard is located at all? I nearly decided against a MK5 purely as I loathe the steering wheel so much :ashamed:
Edit: Located Durham, brilliant :notworthy:
-
Will there be enough difference between an S3 and ED30 in the 'soul' department?
-
Will there be enough difference between an S3 and ED30 in the 'soul' department?
Hopefully so, at least on the basis of less weight and FWD only? Though ultimately it's still just a four-pot turbo so appreciate it won't give me the audible delights of my old R32/Imprezas.
I'd like a map that gives an old school turbo shove, akin to the VXRs/Scoobies, rather than a linear power delivery
-
I came to the mk5 from the older shape S3 (via a detour to the M3 camp) and that was a great change but to come from the 2007 S3. not sure its totally worth it. Just get a decent GEO set up done on the S3?
That aside.
Yes the Mk6 wheel upgrade when done with the CH steering wheel control module will give you all the working buttons. Many including myself have done this.
For the interior, it came as tartan with leather bolsters with red stitching as standard. This is very desirable as a retro fit so if you can't find one with leather just offer it up afterwards for a swap with full leather. This is actually what I did but in reverse. My GTI had full leather and I wanted the ED30 interior so managed to swap. Some may see as a downgrade but as I said the tartan ed30 half leather is very south after.
-
i love the steering wheel in my eddy :surprised:
i was thinking of going from eddy to S3 at some point.
i live near middlesbrough. theres a guy in saltburn whos very god with VW's he fitted my cruise control. google - teeside VW

Cheers Spankiee.
We could have swapped if I hadn't have sold her!

Borrow a dsg for a week,
My car history is very similar to yours, I made the mistake of buying dsg which was a terrible drive, yes it's quick when giving it some but day to day it was a pita, always wanted to be in 6th gear

I remember you from the R32 OC pal :happy2:
I've pretty much convinced myself back to manual in the space of a few hours, you've sealed the deal :signLOL:
-
I'll fly the flag for dsg then
I love it.
Car history is
Honda crx
Vw corrado vr6
Audi s3 1.8t
Audi s3 1.8t
BMW m3 smg
Golf gti dsg
This year I also changed my caddy tdi manual for a dsg as well.
I'd not go back to a manual now. Love just leaving it in auto around town and then having manual control for the few times I actually need it when I go for a nice drive.
Take out the pre cat for a nice dsg gear change pop and stick on a milltek or similar and for me it's perfect.

I was looking to get my wheel changed and coming from Glasgow the closest place I found was jmb retrofit. They are based in the north east and the price quoted was pretty reasonable.

As far as i know they come with the half leather/half tartan seats, but im sure if you look hard enough you'll find one witer!h full leath

I personally disagree with this argument about driving a DSG
Yes if you looking for a leisurely drive it will go to 6th as soon as possible , I'm guessing to be more economical however if you driving it hard it'll hold the revs longer.
Secondly, if you want more control over the gear changes switch to manual mode or use the paddles, best of both worlds.
-
Regardless of what setting you have it in I just found it a much less engaging drive than a manual car. No doubt they're rapid but its not for me.
-
as I said there good for ragging about, but how often do you rag your car?
I know most of my driving is normal traffic driving 30/40mph stop start, I don't see the point of buying auto then having to down change and hold it in manual mode as its trying to go up a hill in 6th gear at 35mph
-
Must have been a really crap example of dsg. Mines never done that.

Did you consider or try a Haldex controller & WOT box combination before selling up? :rolleye:

Haldex controller is £MEGA money.
4WD needs big power to make it as exciting as FWD. I can see why he changed

Dead on. My 2007 Impreza STI was 370BHP, in honesty the 260BHP Astra VXR I went to felt just as "fun", that's why you see so many Imprezas/Evos running 500+BHP - people are chasing excitement, not necessarily outright speed. It took me many cars to learn two things;
I prefer turbo over naturally aspirated.
FWD and light/small chassis is typically more fun for ragging around (versus 4WD, not RWD).
All subject to opinion of course :)

gti handles so much better than vxr aswell

Oh god don't get me started, the amount of times I nearly put it in a ditch was unreal....and that was just reversing off the driveway :signLOL:

Agreed, i love the dsg, does best of both worlds. Can be easy and lazy or sporty and quick. I would always pick it over the manual.

Few questions on DSG, forgive my naivety/stupidity....
So in sport mode in DSG, does it simply rev to the redline in each gear? At what sort of revs does it then kick down to a lower gear?
In drive mode, presumably it only revs to 4-5K before selecting next gear?
If using manual mode and flappy paddles, will it just bounce off the limiter if I don't change up or will it take over itself? What if I tap-tap-tap down from doing 70, will it drop down to second gear and blow up my engine or will it limit how low I can drop to?
Will paddles act as an override on the odd touch, I.e. Cruising at 70 then wanting to drop a cog for a quick burst?
Can you select DSG mode whilst driving or just stationery? What's stopping me hitting it in reverse when on the motorway? Presumably there's some fail safe? lol
Engine braking - does this become non existent?
Finally, how many times did you new owners nearly put yourself thought the windscreen by accidentally hitting the brake thinking it was your clutch? (Only ever drove an auto once and that was for 15mins, it was a horrendous experience for me but understand it will take time to grow accustomed)
-
I can only base my reply on what I've read, and the two times I've driven a DSG (courtesy car from dealer):
So in sport mode in DSG, does it simply rev to the redline in each gear? At what sort of revs does it then kick down to a lower gear?
No. It still changes gear but later IIRC. Changes are sharper/more aggressive.
If using manual mode and flappy paddles, will it just bounce off the limiter if I don't change up
No it'll change up to protect the engine and DSG box. A DSG remap will help hold the gear.
What if I tap-tap-tap down from doing 70, will it drop down to second gear and blow up my engine or will it limit how low I can drop to?
Presumably you'll be slowing down rather than trying to drop it into second? In which case it'll be fine.
Will paddles act as an override on the odd touch, I.e. Cruising at 70 then wanting to drop a cog for a quick burst?
It'll let you do that.
Can you select DSG mode whilst driving or just stationery? What's stopping me hitting it in reverse when on the motorway? Presumably there's some fail safe? lol
I don't think you can select reverse on the paddles. You move the floor shifter to reverse.
Engine braking - does this become non existent?
No. Engine braking still applies.
Finally, how many times did you new owners nearly put yourself thought the windscreen by accidentally hitting the brake thinking it was your clutch? (Only ever drove an auto once and that was for 15mins, it was a horrendous experience for me but understand it will take time to grow accustomed)
Well I drove two DSG cars on two occasions for a total of four days and I was used to it within about five mins. Just don't move your left foot (use the foot pedal) and you'll be fine.
-

Have to say on a flat road around 40mph with very little throttle, the car will go into 6th but if there is some load or the accelerator is pressed further it instantly drops down to a lower gear. I've never felt mine struggle due to a wrong gear choice in D mode. I have to admit I do love the DSG. I prefer auto in stop start traffic which is most of my driving. On the other hand, IMO when i want to give it a good rag about part of me wants a manual to control the auto upshift a bit better on the limit. My car is completely stock, so maybe a DSG remap may help with that.

Remap the DSG and your soon change your mind :innocent:.. Full manual mode soon cures your complaint.
-
I agree it prob does, but you shouldn't have too
-
Thanks for all of the great info guys, helpful bunch you are :)

I've gone from AWD manual to a more powerful FWD DSG car. I like the gearbox, but I'd forgotten how rubbish FWD plus big power is!

R32 is medium power. :popcornsoda:

I have all of the cars you have had mate and I thought the same about the s3. The edition 30 is a much better drive :) less grip but better steering and overall handling and faster on the move.

Thanks pal, that's extremely reassuring :happy2:
It's also reassuring you're just as mental as I am for working through the A-Z of performance motors  The one regret I have is not having an E46 M3 amongst them. I discounted the Ford ST3 out of badge snobbery alone, despite the nice sounding 2.5 lump.

Funnily enough I looked at the Cupras earlier, I just can't get away with the cars aesthetic, though they do look like a steal in terms of good value.
-
What was missing from the S3 then? I'm looking at buying one....

The interior doesn't look great and from the outside it looks like an Altea/MPV.

It's hard to say - it was a brilliant car - technically the best of all I've owned from the list you see. Mine had Bose, flat bottom MFSW, Recaro wing backs etc. very well specced, comfortable, nice interior, fast'ish, solid build quality, part time 4wd, subtle.
On paper, it was perfect. In real life....erm....boring is the only word I can bring to mind? Perhaps it was down to it being a heavy car, perhaps it was the 4 pot turbo, my other theory; it was just too perfect. I look back at my other cars and remember the good and bad, each had a personality. The S3 was akin to Mr. Perfect, nothing wrong with the guy, but just not someone you'd want to have a pint with?

Wasted all my money on cars and modding them Like a idiot lol I could of owned my own house by now but was fun. I always wanted a m3 and have drove a few but there just not practical as a everyday car and the problems but me off. I had a st montune 290 was a beast but had gearbox issues and I had to sell it juicy tho. The s3 was one of the most disappointing cars I have owned, edition 30 beats it in every way and is much better on fuel. I had a bmw 335i last and I would not advise anyone to get one, I had so many issues with the thing...

Jesus, so glad you mentioned the 335i as that was down as a potential. The cracked liner issue put me off the Focus too.
Worst car for me, the VXR. In the space of 4 weeks; £650 gearbox rebuild and £260 cracked manifold/turbo replacement. Both issues common on the VXR, I was lucky enough to be hit with both.

Yes agreed, felt a little numb really. Good for a cruiser I guess. Depends what you want from the car Dan? At 32 year old I seen mine as a way to calm my arse down with something subtle but still sporty, maybe it was too early for me
-
I want something reliable and nice, but puts a big grin on my face when I get shifting on a twisty road. I knew they might be a bit calm as standard but I want a platform I can go big power on at some point.
Is the steering really that bad? Is there any way to improve it like suspension/ polybushing/ lighter wheels etc...
Cheers for the responses :happy2:

Get a edition 30 or a r32 steering is so much better and they are much more fun to drive.. Bmw 130i is a good shout if you can handle the looks

I have had 2 vxrs and both had gearbox issues haha they are fast but sh*te....I bought a 335i from a bmw dealer before xmas and had so many issues and had to get my money back. The n54 engine is not reliable in my opinion.

R32's sound great but are a bit boring, and I have an eternal burning hatred for the 1 series and any BMW with an X on it.
Maybe a nice ED30 is the way to go, I really fancied the 4WD though since mine had been sh*t to drive since November.
I need to have a good test drive or borrow one for a weekend ideally.
-
That's why I went to an a4 Quattro.
The cupra was great but in winter pointless.
-
I've had most of the cars mentioned in the thread including a few more and now have just bought a stage 2 edition. The e46 M3 is a great allrounder but issues seem to becoming more prominent with them as most are close to 100k miles now and are expensive to fix I've had 2 and the second was a nightmare ( cracked piston and headgasket failure )
The mk2 focus RS is a good car but a bit in your face and draws attention and I did regret paying 20k for one as you start noticing a lot of cheap parts on them that you might miss after a test drive. The engine is a peach though but a stage 1 eddy is less than half the price and a much better car IMHO.
Get a dsg edition and you won't look back. :happy2:

There seems to be a lot of negativity towards the S3. I can honestly say it's the best car I've driven by a country mile. I do agree that it needs some money spent on it if standard, but once the money is spent it truly makes the car a different beast. The best mod to help the understeer are front and rear ARB's - they transform the car. Then even lowering springs or coilovers make a big difference to how she handles. I've just bought the Competition Haldex controller and can't wait for it to arrive - apparently one of the best handling mods
-
@Jussa (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2225) that's what I was thinking, as standard its a very nice car but maybe a tad boring looks and drive wise but with a few outside tweeks they look awesome and with even just a map, exhaust and intake it should come to life.
